Food / Polish cakes made in Poland [115]

those look like cookies....

To me they look like biscuits. Cookies, at least the ones I have seen over here, are large and have a soft consistency. Often they have dried fruit or chocolate chips in them. Biscuits are harder and have a crunchier texture.

Those Hungarian creations definitely look like British scones.

Off-Topic / Should people be free to cut their hair and dye it as they want? [16]

piercings, tattoos and garishly dyed hair,

As in the punk rock era of the late 70s in the UK. People were disapproving back then too.

I think attitudes in Poland have changed a lot over the last 10-15 years or so. Young people in Poland are becoming less conservative. I remember having a convo with a young Polish guy about 10 years ago who was very disapproving of tattoos. He said only people who had been in prison had them. He wasn't the only person who expressed that view either.

These days I see lots of Poles with tattoos.

Should a bunch of middle aged men dictate how young people present themselves

They shouldn't but some things never change. Unfortunately, some people will judge purely on appearance.

freedom loving right

Narrow-minded and intolerant people generally.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

How did the idiom come into being ????

I have no idea.

A clue is that the term originates in a very non-standard form of Polish that has its own name for things.

I have no idea about this either. I thought maybe you meant Lechitic languages but I don't think you do. Still can't get the 'spider' either.

he activity which is performed on the guitar is playing it.

I wasn't thinking along those lines, I was thinking how sound is produced.

How did the idiom come into being ????

I'm too tired to do this now......

Still don't get the judas thing.

Something external.

Is it a high-wheeled carriage?

Fenix said nothing about it and she holds the priority for such opinions

I don't know everything!

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

Over a million other Americans had their homes invaded last year.

At gunpoint? Please provide sources.

1 in 5 Americans have had a family member killed by a gun. That's not an insignificant number and shows that family are more likely to be killed than saved by guns.

If, as you say, you've lived for decades in the US and somehow managed to avoid a home invasion, then it's extremely unlikely that it's going to happen to you. Having 3 guns in your house no less than 15ft away from you suggests to me that you are paranoid rather than rational. Especially considering that you say you live in a very safe area.

Still no comment about this weeks family shooting? No worries, I'm sure there'll be another one shortly for me to link to.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [818]

I'm stumped. You can only replace the 'b' in beer with the letters d, j, p, s, if it's not veer or leer.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

No, it doesn`t.

I know. I did a search in Polish ages ago.

I read it in books by Marek Hłasko or Bogdan Loebl written in 1960s.

Great! I can spend hours guessing which author and which books!

Is the meaning a dedication? As in for those who came before and did the hard work to make things easier?

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [818]

Why are you doing it to me?

You're just lucky I guess :)

it is z interconnected with r.

Yes. I forgot it's a digraph.

Think harder...

That could be interpreted as leer rather than beer.

humans perpetuate the same horrid things endlessly.

Yes. We will end up destroying ourselves because we have learnt nothing from history.

by major I mean a really serious one!!!

I can't see anything that major.

There should be a 'z' instead of the 'c' after the 'r in wieprzowina.

Vegetables is spelt incorrectly.

I presume 'Letis' is to show pronunciation of lettuce.

It is a mausoleum to honour the victims of Majdanek death camp killed by Germans during WW2.

Yes. Well done. I knew you would get it quite quickly.

concrete monument dome inscription.

The inscription reads ' Los nasz dla was przestrogą.' Let our fate be a warning to you. Very chilling.

another more spectacular monument in the same place

I didn't choose that one because I knew it was the more well-known monument.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

As many times as you called for cops to save your life.

No intruder has broken into your home then or you'd be singing it from the rooftops.

I can't imagine living the way you must do. Are you armed every time you answer the door?

Please ... I beg you ... don't kill me

Probably said by the wife to her husband before he fatally shot her and her 3 kids. If she had time. Of course, you have no comment about their deaths. You can't even argue that they were black.

it must be a good example of brutalist architecture.

It isn't :)

A clue:

The structure bears an inscription which I made sure wasn't visible in this particular photo. Its words, in my opinion, are simple but devastating.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

My gun is strictly for self-defense at home

How many times have you pointed it at an intruder?

I have a gun on every floor.

It's called living in fear.

In other news, a 10 year old boy woke up to find his entire family dead. His father had shot and killed his wife and 3 sons before killing himself:
