News / The Political Circus of Poland [306]

No he did not. He was referring to Beata Kempa and agent "Tomek" pledging for the "kibol" Piotr "Staruch" Staruchowicz. This info is still in hundreds of archives. No sense to deny it.

Typical PIS lying scum, somebody should really take the whip to those semi civilized PIS clowns. During the election campaign they backed the Kibole at every opportunity. I hope that cretin and political pygmy(not just in the physical sense) Kaczynski does take Tusk to court, this will be just one in a number of cases that he would have lost. The problem is that every time he looses, he just shrugs his shoulders because he thinks he is above the law. kaczynski is maybe qualified to practice politics in countries like like Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan, because that's the sort of standards he has brought into Polish public life, but Poland does not deserve him.

News / Donald Tusk's Government of Poland Continues to Oppress Poles [161]

I think his choices are very rational when looked thorough the prism of party politics. Tusk has made it quite clear that he is not going to serve the full term, with this in mid he is turning his thoughts to who his successor is going to be, that is why he has promoted potential leadership hopefuls and given them the opportunity of proving themselves before the next leadership contest. He wants PO to have the widest possible choice of future leader.

That is why he has promoted the right's faction Jaroslaw Gowin, at the expense of Kwiatkowski(who was a very good minster, wom everyone expected to hold his portfolio) to the position of Justice Minister, Because he wants him to be tested(Justice is a difficult portfolio, and Gowin has no legal experience) and because Tusk is from the moderate faction and he want's him to potentially stumble so somebody from the moderate side can win the leadership.

He has promoted a number of potential moderate leadership hopefuls, whom he hopes one of them will eventually take over the leadership-Slawomir Nowak, Cichon, and Mucha. He also wants Sikorski to have a shot at the leadership , because he sees him as quite capable and that is why he has integrated him into the structures of the party.

He wants there to be a potential women PM, that is why he has promoted Kopacz to the position of speaker. He has also demoted Schetyna who up till now was his main leadership rival, because he didn't want him to have it too easy in contesting for the leadership, it's the same story with Grabarczyk-in the previous parliament he used to play them off against each other.

I think this is generally a good thing for Poland because they will have a genuine contest for the leadership, which a healthy democracy needs and which the current official opposition, because of its sheer incompetence, cannot provide.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

So, do Polish people generally think of themselves as Central European? Or is it just this one guy?

Read the whole thread, instead of asking the same question over and over again.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

they are forced to prove that they are good enough to be the West

Well that is quite obviously the agenda of some, especially those with the least amount of knowledge and quite content to stay that way. After all that is not their primary purpose for posting on here.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

One's choice does not come down to "one's perception"

Looking at this from a strictly geographical point of view you could be right, but quite obviously this thread is not all about geography, therefore perception comes into it.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Well it's semantics really, you can interpret it that way. I was specifically referring to the said author's analysis, and pointing out that as with most things in life, an academic authority's evaluation is just as equally valid in the sphere of academia, as it is in other areas of life concerning authority.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

What does that mean?

Don't you find the meaning quite evident? I don't see any equivocation in the sentence do you? You do know what authority is don't you(:

And what does that mean?
The decision this thread asks the poster to make is arbitrary because neither of the alternatives in the titular disjunction can be shown to be definitely right or wrong.

There were plenty of wrong decisions made in the past relating to many different spheres of life that were based on insufficient or bad information by those who had the authority of making the decisions. Politics and war, are two very good examples.

Well it all depends on one's perception, but not every person's perception is of equal worth.

I see, well as in most things in life authority is everything. Indeed many a arbitrary decision has been the result of ignorant authority.

Dream on

Yes, you should keep on dreaming. I am afraid that prejudice is no guide to logic. A map of Europe according to Samuel P. Huntington. As we can see Mr. Huntington clearly places Poland in the west, and he should know since he is the leading theorist of this very issue(:

Culturally, mentality wise - it's much less clear.

Well that's because there is no such think as one homogeneous "western culture" or mentality, take Italy and the UK for instance, very few similarities. So come to think of it if your post wasn't related to geography or about politics/history, then I fail to understand you. Unless of course you are talking about western materialism, which Poles claim not to share in, but given half a chance would, then it's a slightly different point and not very pertinent to the discussion about east and west.

If you are directing this at me, I certainly don't need you to take me seriously.

I do take you seriously, and no the comments were not directed at you-only the first post about geography vs history and politics bit.

Empty rhetoric?? A bit dramatic.

I have no personal agenda & have explained that I have no issue with the central term. Some Poles just need to make their minds up, that's all.

I didn't imply that you did, though some other people on this thread certainly do. and yes a lot concentration of style at the expense of substance of this thread, that's for sure.

Still all my comments stand.

History / Communism fell 20 years ago, Poland led the fight since WW2 [339]

Beautifully chilly speech for the Cold War times:
This government will give the highest priority to our national defence, both conventional and nuclear. [Applause]
:):):)

My sentiments exactly, that iron lady was definitely something(:
I love how in 7:29 she parodies her opponents about their policies and support for unilateral disarmament, hilarious, her dry sense of humor and deadpan delivery made it all the more funnier lol.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

And further to my comments above, if you consult some of the most eminent scholars on this very issue, the divide between east and west, you will find that they place Poland politically speaking in the west. Feel free to consult the no1. best seller "The clash of civilizations"- by Samuel P. Huntington. or "After Tamerlane"- by John Darwin. Both these scholars are eminent in their field and both of them have placed Poland firmly in the "western sphere". So if you disagree, my advice to you is get a PHD, write a few Best Sellers, and then maybe just maybe i will take you seriously. Until then it's just empty rhetoric fuelled by personal agenda, as far as I am concerned.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

For my sins, Poland has been (and possibly always will be) an Eastern European country. Simply because, from my perspective it's "over there", on the fringes, beyond etc. Being a neighbour of obviously Eastern European countries helps.

As I have said, if I thought for a minute that this term was offensive to Polish people I would never use it.

I think that you are getting a bit confused by trying to tie up the geographical concept with the political one. Geographically speaking , although it is not anymore, it used to be an East European country. This was the result of Poles controlling large swathes of eastern land-namely the Ukraine and Belarus, countries which were in effect colonies in all but name, were the gentry and the Ruling classes were Polish and the peasantry was predominantly Ruthenian

Politically speaking it is more "western" than some of the countries in the "west", That's why in practiced early forms of democracy and rejected the divine right of kings centuries before some countries in the west. And that is why historically it sometimes defined its mission as bringing Catholicism into eastern Orthodox lands, this is why you now have a third religion called the Unites. In my opinion if you don't understand these two concepts, then you don't really understand Polish history.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

have you ever referrred to or considered Poland as Eastern Europe?

Not in the broader historical context. How could i classify a country with Europe's first modern constitution (3rd of May) and and its first ministry of education (both based on the values and ideas of the enlightenment) as Eastern, not that there is anything wrong with the east-after all Byzantium (Europe's most progressive Empire for quite a long period) was located in the east, as was the ancient Civilization of China etc.

9/10 people will tell you Poland is in Eastern Europe.

Which doesn't say much about the collective intelligence of 9/10 of the population(:

That's a first, Austria being called Eastern Europe. I'm sure the Viennese would love to hear that they live in an Eastern European capital!

Very funny indeed, the Swedes would be quite surprised as would the Finns.

I think that this joker is a pretend Englishman, with such dreadful spelling and all.

Hence his good knowledge of Serbian history, servile attitude to and admiration of all thinks Russian (odd think about many Serbians is that they see themselves as lesser people in comparison to the Russians), but he want openly admit it because he knows that they have reputation as baby killers and rapists after their recent Kosovo conflict.
