News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [363]

I thought you would care about those horrible conditions for child psychiatric patients that PiS caused and PO solved.

I wouldn't expect them to solve every problem Poland has after only 8 months in power, but it looks like they didn't forget about this one:

medonet.pl/biznes-system-i-zdrowie,rzad-dofinansuje-polska-psychiatrie--mamy-sporo-do-zrobienia,artykul,49225945.html

However, I'd expect them not to cause new problems.
How about you? Do you care about Polish media? PiS and their supporters claimed that they care about pluralism in media in Poland and the right to getting information. Where are they now?

Nobody cares? I care. I already didn't take part in local and Euro elections... I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to take part in the presidential elections...

Covers of Polish newspapers today:

"POLITICIANS! DON'T KILL POLISH MEDIA!"

Is the Polish government betraying Polish media in favour of the foreign big tech? It looks like it:

wiadomosci.wp.pl/po-co-nam-polskie-media-skoro-mamy-google-i-mete-opinia-7045090697894432a

Btw, I have some observations concerning some of the stuff mentioned in this article. Firstly, about those all powerful algorithms. I've seen artists complaining about them quite some time ago already. That it was better on social media and YouTube before they were introduced. And they're still complaining about them. I see other users complaining about them on regular basis too. Why are they there then if they make things worse? 🤨🤔

And as for those weird adds with fake news that the journalist mentioned - I see them all the time on Instagram for example. They are made to look like they are news from "Gazeta Wyborcza". Omenaa Mensah and Sławomir Mentzen seem to be "trending" in them now for some reason o_O (I wonder if Kuba Wojewódzki and Omenaa Mensah know that "they" are promoting some Neoprofit app lol):

News / Rape and sexual abuse in Poland [202]

There was no "message". They raped, because they could.

I'm saying this because Soviet soldiers were behaving in the same way in countries they were "liberating" from the Nazis.

So what kind of "message" Soviet soldiers intended to send by raping women in Poland? Or by raping women in Serbia?:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_during_the_liberation_of_Serbia

That it's better not get "liberated" by the Soviets? lol Well, we definitely got that message.

No, I wouldn't.

Why not?

BTW, did you know that Auschwitz female guards were more cruel than their male buddies?

No, I didn't - where did you get that info? And what does it have to do with anything anyway?

And that German women happily made ammo and guns that would later be used to murder millions of Soviets?

Firstly, I'm sure not all women worked in ammo factories. Secondly, you don't know which were doing it "happily". Thirdly, Jews were forced to produce ammo, etc. for Nazis too. Also, I doubt German 12-15-year-old girls were working in factories producing ammo.

Simple. Victory must include this message: Don't even think about it again.

There was no "message". They raped, because they could.

Yeah no problem for me.

That's clearly a problem for the RuSSian government though and that "funny guy" Putin.

I would give them a break in 1945 in Berlin.

I wonder if you'd say the same thing if you lived in Germany back then and your granddaughters were gang-raped to death by Soviet soldiers.

It was just a joke.

He shouldn't be joking about that. Rape isn't funny. Especially made by a public person and in such a context - Putin is a president himself. Jokes often tell you something about people's attitude's from what I've noticed. Did you notice that women don't joke about rape? Why is it always men? I think you know why.

Even you, Paulina, must admit that it's very impressive that the President of Israel managed to rape 10+ women.

No, I don't find anything "impressive" about it.

Unfortunately for women, most of them are trusting naive idiots because they were raised by equally trusting and naive parents.

Then educate them. My parents never talked to me about such stuff.

But don't end there. Educate your sons about what rape is and how important consent is.

Jesus... I had to google it to check if it's true...

From the article:

"Andrei Kolesnikov, a Kremlin pool veteran, heard the rest. "It was one of those moments when you couldn't believe your ears," he said. Another reporter said officials had burst into laughter."

I wonder if they'd be laughing if their wife or daughter was raped... Stupid a$$holes.

Lighten up, Paulina.

How is that supposed to lighten me up... 🙁

And if you needed even more:

"A 1994 study found that between 25 and 35 percent of men lack knowledge about what constitutes rape, and a 2010 report noted men are more likely than women to have these attitudes."

Now that's freaking scary.

And this:

"She said Turner committed rape but that he does not think he did so. He did not apologize for sexual assault in a court statement to the judge. He apologized for drinking too much."

News / Rape and sexual abuse in Poland [202]

And more from the article:

"University of Arizona professor Mary Koss, who coined the term "date rape" in the 1980s, found in a 1987 study that 7.7 percent of male students reported anonymously they had forced or tried to force someone to have sex with them. Almost none of them considered that to be rape.

Koss said she still hears these sentiments from her students. She said some young men think that, if they're as intoxicated as a female partner, whatever happens can be blamed on the alcohol. She adds that others think young women secretly want to be pushed into a sexual encounter."

And its very fruitful to enshrine consent in law.

And consent wasn't included in the previous definition of rape in Polish law, which is... messed up. So, when I think about it now I have to go back on my statement here that I made in another thread:

the problem wasn't the law

Actually - it was.
After all - this is what rape boils down to - lack of consent. So that should be included in the definition in the first place and not last.

I've just realised that based on the previous definition of rape you would be allowed to rape an unconscious person or someone who is too drunk to resist o_O Because an unconscious or a completely wasted person can't fight back/resist, so the rapist wouldn't have to:

1. Use violance.
2. Use unlawful threats.
3. Use deception.

So, based on the previous definition - if you rape an unconscious or a completely drunk person and you didn't make this person unconscious or drunk yourself by the use of deception then... it's not rape o_O

So, yeah, that definition definitely wasn't complete, to put it mildly.

So now you will tell me : "What does it matter? Every moron knows what rape is!"

Do they though? Clearly not - there are morons who don't know and some of those morons are Polish judges. And Polish judges are not unique in this.

This discussion reminded me of the pretty famous case in the US when a successful student of some prestigious university raped an unconscious girl at a parking lot and was caught during the act by passers-by. He got only 6 months in prison.

So why am I writing about this and why the change in the definition of rape was important and needed? Here is why:

washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/06/11/a-huge-myth-about-rape-on-college-campuses-gets-to-the-heart-of-the-problem/

"Oklahoma State University professor John Foubert, who designed his school's rape prevention program, asked a group of first-year fraternity brothers in a 2007 study whether they'd ever raped someone. They all said no. Foubert changed the phrasing, however, and 10 percent of first-year brothers reported they'd penetrated a woman against her permission.

"They don't see this behavior as rape, perhaps as a way to protect themselves, to not be responsible for their behavior if that happens," Foubert said. "It's not just college students. You hear these beliefs in broader society.""

It's not a civil case. The guilt has to be proven. The evidence responsibility lies on the prosecution.

Exactly. I don't know where some men get this notion that FROM NOW ON a woman's word will be enough to sentence a man for rape lol They must be living in some fantasy world of their own making and not in Polish reality.

then clearly the former definition wasn't enough.

I should probably add "not enough for Polish judges". As it was stated in the article - the problem wasn't the law, but the mentality. And since you can't change the mentality "just like that", you have to change the law. And maybe in the long run that will also influence the mentality at least to some extent.

Here's a good article about why the change in the definition of rape was needed in Poland:

wiadomosci.wp.pl/zmiana-definicji-zgwalcenia-to-nie-gwalt-na-prawie-lecz-potrzebna-korekta-opinia-7044384982428512a

If in our country a court decides that when a 15-year-old girl is being raped by her uncle - her crying, saying no and pushing his hands away is "not resisting enough" then clearly the former definition wasn't enough. Apparently Polish judges have to have it written down more explicitly o_O

Also, prosecutors in case of rape accusation will still have to prove in court that there was no consent.

They do it because they're just not willing to wait, save and buy for cash.

There are instances though when people take a loan or pay "na raty" to buy something that is needed now, because they simply don't have enough cash. I don't think there's anything wrong with that if it's important and reasonable. For example, when me and my brother were at school my mother took a loan to buy us a computer. Thanks to that I didn't have to go to an internet cafe every time I needed something for homework from the internet and I improved my French and I got better grades. That was some special loan given by her workplace or sth. She paid off the loan and we had a computer at home. No problems, no drama.

I blame social media idiocy for that, and it's so sad - instead of saving, investing and building a better, safe financial future for their families, they are trying to "impress" strangers on social media.

That's one factor for sure. But I think it's also a kind of need for "insta-gratification". People want everything "now".

Statistically, it may not be as bad as in the West, but we are heading in exactly the same direction at the moment.

Yeah, it looks like it.

most people I know aren't from there

One doesn't have to be from Warsaw. That city does things to you ;P

and aren't korpo people or all of them particularly middle class

You don't have to be the corpo type or middle class. My impression is that it affects all "classes". "Poorer" people in Warsaw seem to be even more self-conscious about not being able to afford things - at least that was my experience in Warsaw.

I live in Poland too

Both you and Atch live in Warsaw though, as far as I understand - I think that may be a factor :) I get an impression that people living in Warsaw often have a bit of a different mentality regarding money and material things, than where I live, for example... Sometimes shockingly so... 🤔

there's a relatively high level of real estate inheritance.

Yup, I think that may be an important factor.

@jon357, I've checked other stats too and in one table it was Switzerland at the top (don't know what year though) - but, again, Poland was at the bottom.

I'd be wary about the stats.

The thing is - I live in Poland and that's also my real life observation on the ground. That's why I decided to verify Atch's comment, because something didn't add up for me... 🤔

Yes, many people are in debt

According to this table it doesn't seem to be so bad in Poland, btw, at least in comparison to other countries in Europe:

statista.com/statistics/1073593/household-debt-ratio-europe-by-country/

Poland is at the bottom of the table with over 40%, while Ireland has 91.81% and the Netherlands is at the top with 187.63% of household indebtedness in the first quarter of 2023 o_O

Yes, many people are in debt and very few have any significant savings.

I've got an impression that's an increasing problem everywhere, unfortunately: 🤔

centralbank.ie/news/article/irish-households-become-the-fourth-most-indebted-in-europe

breakingnews.ie/ireland/irish-public-debt-of-42000-euro-per-person-very-significant-for-small-country-1591722.html

As for the other things you mention, take the opportunity to travel to other European countries if you can and you'll see the same differences between them and the USA.

Yup, although not every country will be as family-oriented, so to speak, as Poland. And as safe, but probably safer than the US, I imagine...

family dynamics

Oh boy... Family in Poland... Yeah... lol

;D

especially between mothers and daughters. It can be heaven or hell.

Yup...

Btw, could you go into details about the differences in family dynamics in the US and Poland? I've never lived abroad, so I'm curious what it's like in other countries :)

Life / What gifts to take? Presents customs in Poland. [173]

coffee chocolates are hard to find in the UK. Doesn't seem to be a popular flavour :(

Potwarz! :O

I have to say that I am not particularly partial to coffee flavoured chocolates.

Why... :O

Wish I could buy just the coffee ones.

Besides coffee flavoured I also like the hazelnut ones (I think they're the ones with the green stripe) :) Probably the only Merci flavour I could really do without is marzipan (I just don't like marzipan in general).

Nasty stuff.

As far as I remember my grandma would use denaturat to wash a rooster after killing it for chicken soup and she would singe it to get rid of the remnants of fathers or sth. 🤔 Ugh, the smell...

Do you think it's genuine?

Probably a joke lol

According to you - the biggest moron on this forum :)

You don't know that...If she is not, Poland is not progressive enough.

You could say the same thing about Ivanka Trump, since Donald Trump isn't progressive enough :)))

So where is the sperm donor today?

Yes, genius. The Vatican has one black cardinal.

Well, "genius", I think it's more probable for a Polish woman to get into a relationship with some guy from Africa who came to study in Poland and stayed here, for example, than a Polish woman going to the "black part" of Africa as a sex tourist and coming back with a baby lol

PolAm's comment was retarded.

I Googled "Ugly African Polish transgender woman wins beauty contest" and nothing came up.

She's not transgender, idiot, and I bet she's prettier than your wife lol

You see, internet is not tailored to your mental disorder.

I thought that men go to Thailand, not to Africa :D
