Because nobody was talking about unification or centralization. Once you done it, all went to the dogs!
Is nothing, imposing unification from the top by some loonies without mandate from their voters and in breach of the treaties is not a way to go.

If US business is breaking the law in Poland it should be brought to heel.

That is a project thought out by bureaucrats, their idea is to cheat, blackmail and force. There are corrupt, and there many other issues with them, their idologically crazy.
German corporations are only going for it because they smell profit and they don't look beyond that.
There are so many warring signs, but you are blind, you here only unifications as if it was something good on its own.
They already make economy bad because of green policies, Germany is depended on Russian gas, more intergration is a solution to Brexist that only happend Becasue EU refused to ajust some rules. Soon after France ajusted some rules in it favour. \
Now EU try to order Poland about, impose ideology, impose their rule in Poland. They are acting in a direct violation of the treaty,
They make separate rules for Poland then for the rest of them.

I about asumption that current institutions will do the job for federal EU. They won't. Not only there is a need for new treaties but also for new EU institutions, I would model them on the USA.
