Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [816]
Without looking too hard on youtube I found a public service announcement (a couple actually) from British TV using the 'zapnij pas' meaning.... and at least one video discusses the other meaning as a phrasal verb (and I found an example from a very, very old british comedy, the Larkins, as well).
I wouldn't say the idiomatic meaning applies to Zapnij pas.

It might be dated.... I've mostly (only?) heard it on old British comedies from previous decades, but if you put it into google with 'meaning' it shows both the 'buckle up' meaning and the idiomatic meaning....
I'm actually stumped as to what the other expression is.

betting the economic house on russia behaving like a normal country and not a violent psychotic?
Which of those deserves support?
Mainstream parties do not deserve such a drop in trust

That's would I would say (without the extra meaning) but Brits have another expression* that means the same thing and has another meaning too

My crazy theory: SPD (captured by russia) watered down the CDU platform precisely to help AfD (also funded by russia).
When politicians as a class decide to ignore citizen concerns (as they have in a lot of western European countries) then bad things happen.
If there were elections in Germany today, the AfD would win

Maybe more like "I dont' really know...." or... lots of times that I've heard it the most natural translation would be "I dunno..." (that is the voice doesn't go down like a statement but stays level to indicate an incomplete thought).

The book doesn't actually explain the difference (just has 'pen' as the translation and długopis is nowhere to be found IIRC).
It did lead to me, more than once, asking someone in a store for a pen only to be told they didn't sell any (while standing in front of about a thousand pens).
I figured it out but... still.... not fun memories....

My recommendation would be an older book that isn't a reference grammar but does a pretty good job of explaining structures in plain language
Teach Yourself Polish, by Polish, by M. Corbridge-Patkaniowska (not the later revised version by a different author which is... not so good).
The biggest problem is that some of the vocabulary is outdated (nobody uses pióro for pen anymore...) and so is a lot of the phrasing ('transposition of endings' was still a going concern when the book was published but all but vanished from modern spoken Polish).
Still, it's very good at explaining things step by step in a pretty accessible way.

(to be fair, etymologically and diachronically (ie in the past) it had a different meaning but synchronically (now) it looks and sounds the same as 'because I know'
