Of course not, sometimes addiction is at least partly the least awful option for a traumatized person... temporary numbing of otherwise unbearable pain. I get that. But it's not just an economic problem that can be solved.

IIRC there's also what might be called opportunistic addiction where removing the source of trauma removes the addiction (or makes it easier to deal with the underlying psychological issue).

To be truthful, I despise recreational users of hard drugs more than addicts... it's like the first season of White Lotus, where a bag of recreational drugs meant to relieve boredom for a couple of rich guests end up having a devastating effect on a recovering addict... A lot of people died in Latin America so rich @ssh0els in NAmerica could have a recreational snort....

trying to treat addiciton without treating the underlying psychological issues is a road to nowhere... as they say, addictions don't destroy people, they happen to people who've already been destroyed.. (:yeah I know, people vary widely in how prone they are to various types of addiction partly on biological grounds).

Problems that politicians want are seldom solved by political means...

A major problem with democracy is that at times, the political establishment is united against the citizens. Migration is such an issue in western Europe where in most countries the political establishment wants it to continue and a large majority of citizens want it to stop.

This creates opportunities for both sincere populists and insincere demagogues... I don't know exactly where I'd place Farage... not as demagoguey as Le Pen or Orban but not great in lots of ways either.

The difference between heroin and coke was pointed out, i believe, by junkie William Burroughs... (paraphrasing). Being addicted to heroin is like having a second stomach - as long as you feed it periodically you're okay and you don't want more and more and more heroin.

This is a big problem.... the disconnect between the political establishment and chattering classes who are not directly affected by terrible policies that please the political establishment and chattering classes.

From what I understand, although Merz and party ran on tightening up against current 'asylum' and 'refugee' policies* to put together a coalition Merz had to give u on pretty much everything there and nothing will actually change....

I think this 'report' is just an attempted end run around citizen dissatisfaction and AfD will, in fact, continue to grow until it is either the largest party or is banned (what happens then is anyone's guess... my guess is mostly nothing until economic collapse a few years out).

*in scare quotes because probably over 90% of those claiming refugee status or asylum do not meet the minimum requirements for either. but once in Germany they'll end up staying, getting money from the government while contributing nothing...

What I find odd about some of these cases is that I don't think the patients are drunk... I'm sure paramedics and other healthcare workers know how to deal with drunk people (who are usually not coordinated/fast enough to do much damage).

I'm wondering if some of it is drug related (specifically some kind of speed).

reg prison employees, in some parts of the US prisons are the main local employers (in most states iinm prisons are clustered in and around a particular town).

I had a friend who worked in a prison library and he mostly enjoyed it though occasionally he'd say something like "I spent part of the afternoon wiping blood off of a shelf" (there had been a stabbing in the stacks....)
