Off-Topic / Terms of Russian Surrender [116]

What is "aggressive sorosism" ?

If that is what we have in Poland then I can deal with it. Poland is far from a perfect state but

- I am free to go where I want
- say what I want, read what I want
- no military service
- my kids have a fair chance in life
- the country is getting richer and with other ways of making money than just selling oil
- far more equal society than Udmurtia
- our leaders at least are restrained in how much they steal

Off-Topic / Terms of Russian Surrender [116]

First 4 plus war crimes investigation. Sanctions to remain in place until all suspects in custody.

Permanent ban on importing military electronics - you can try and make your own, but of course it will be useless junk.

Also handover of the Salisbury poisoners and other mischief makers.

News / When will the GDP of Poland be higher than Udmurtians? [5]

2021 GDP Udmurtia. 1.7trillion
2021 GDP Poland 0.7 trillion

Since then

Poland 2 years of growth
Udmurtia 2 years of stagnation / recession

Poland increasing population and investment
Udmurtia - population exodus and its main industries and export markets in tatters

I think in about 2033 Poland will be higher

Life / Warsaw - what's there to love? Semi-livable city? [42]

If it was destroyed it would just be replaced by office blocks, malls and apartments. Could be just turned into a park I guess.

Anyway, it would have to be paid for by Polish taxpayers, not Australians.

I am sure now that destroying it would be unpopular among Warsaw citizens.

History / Why American military aid to Europe and Poland is important to America itself? [212]

So if you think de dollarization is in full swing then why not invest heavily in Rubles or Yuan in some of the excellent and transparent companies there ?

I'm sure a man of your means has plenty of spare cash laying around LOL especially after the 60 ruble bonus that you received last month in addition to three jars of cherry jam from Uzbekistan.

You will have the double joy of being proved correct and also making a packet.

News / How could PiS better spend billions instead of 500+ ? [280]

I think the problem is that you if benefits are not universal then the shrinking number of taxpayers will resent paying their taxes and ultimately start to avoid or cheat on them.

Poland has a very low number of people in private employment and the tax base is shrinking quite quickly after the Polski Lad disaster.

Now is not the time for the increase to 800 zloty. It is pure Gierek economics. Wait for the war to end and inflation to be under 10 percent.

I am fine with 500 plus for all kids - it is the unaffordable and inflationary 300 zloty increase I have a problem with. Insane to do this when the country's finances are still recovering from lockdown

Law / Climate change/environmental businesses or NGOs in Poland [66]

You think Covid was a hoax ?

I agree I have lots of questions about lockdown, pfizers profits, big tech etc but I am confident that what I caught was a new kind of virus that made me lose my smell and taste.

Law / Rejecting inheritance on behalf of my daughter [2]

Polish courts have no jurisdiction over your daughter and won't be able to enforce that so don't waste any money on lawyers or courts. In any case the liability for debts is now restricted up to the value of the estate, even for Polish citizens

Off-Topic / Stock Market and Trading Talk [1011]

Right, another quarter end has passed, so here is the performance of our stocks. A great few months for Poland (35 percent up). France also flying, then Germany and Spain on 24 percent. UK a bit behind on 14 percent and US lagging on 10%. That's unusual - the US has normally outperformed Europe in the last 10 years. Strong Euro and lower interest rates are helping the European markets

CMS picks since July 7th last year

Schlumberger +57%
Siemens +52%
Dexcom +51%
SAP +31%
Pekao +21%

All those comfortably above inflation- Siemens has been through a stock split and I still have the underperforming Siemens Energy + 7%

Then some of mine not so good

Biedronka +11%, picking up nicely
Linde +10% - moved from Frankfurt to NYSE, right idea, wrong timing
General Dynamics + 4%. I thought Ukies would buy a lot, but they are getting most of their weapons in Western Europe
Costco 0%

So all positive but a few below inflation

JRs picks

Apple +16%
Devon Energy -29%. Don't know what the problem is but its been a bad buy for me
Li Auto -34% but it is recovering a bit from it's very poor autumn.

3 more months and then we can choose the next ones !

Study / Jagiellonian University - Share your thoughts [6]

There was a guy on here called Dirk who was an Ivy League guy and also had a bee in his bonnet about liberals and Turks. Not sure if he is posting still but he might give you some advice.

If you are going to do a Masters in Business in Poland then Kozminski in Warsaw has the best reputation. Jagiellonian is a good university for Polish language studies but agree with what Atch says and if you only had a 5 minute interview it might be because they are not that confident talking in depth in English

Off-Topic / Curious Books of PF [50]

I think that book is still in use by the Muscovy military

Chapter 1 - recruit uneducated farm boys and don't waste too many rubels on their training
Chapter 2 - from the safety of your palace, order them to run into enemy machine guns
Chapter 3 - hide the results from the peasants
Chapter 4 - mmm 5 o clock, time for a cocktail and some caviar

Law / Noisy children outside [40]

Your area is probably zoned for residential use, not for business, so the kids have every right to play there - certainly the authorities will not intervene.

My advice - talk politely to their parents in English but get some noise cancelling headphones. If it was my kids I would be happy they were out in the fresh air getting exercise and meeting other kids.

Work / Salary in Krakow - 3850 pln gross per month, zus system [18]

Yes certainly ok to live comfortably on that. The 5k average you saw is probably gross and would be similar to 3k net.

I wouldn't dither too much - there are lots of layoffs in that sector in Poland at the moment.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

There is no way you could turn up at an open market now in Poland and get an AK47 or any sort of firearm.

The last thing the few remaining shady characters there would want is for some random American to turn up and start asking for a weapon and ammo. They would probably snitch to the police or at best sell you a fake and wait for you to take your complaint to UOKiK.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

In Poland this is not a left / right issue.

All mainstream politicians are happy with existing strict controls.

PiS, possibly the most right wing govt in Europe, haven't touched the gun laws after 8 years in power.

One dude, Kukiz, did consider adding easier gun laws to his fringe party's platform in 2017. Unfortunately for a TV interview he picked the day that some guy shot 60 concert goers from his hotel window in Las Vegas. That was just one, now forgotten massacre in a record year for gun deaths in the US.

Work / Taxes for freelance work [5]

Are you an EU citizen ?

Yes, basically you would need to set up a Dzialanosc Gospodarstwo (not possible for some nationalities), or a limited company. You might need to check your visa allows that too. Then you will need to pay tax on those earnings. I can't tell you how much because it depends on if you are married, have kids, what costs you would have for your business etc

Of course you could just set up the entity in your home country and have any cash from your freelance work sent to a bank in your home country. You should really pay tax in that in Poland but they are unlikely to notice.

You would be better off seeing an accountant

Life / Which areas of Poland have the most conservative young women (under 22)? [49]

There aren't really differences between regions among young people when it comes to social views. There is a slight difference between villages and towns but those areas that were conservative saw a lot of emigration and the young people picked up the kind of ideas you hate, from the internet and tv.

You might be best to try specialist Polish dating forums - maybe for right wingers or people who work out. Your views are being honest, very eccentric for typical Polish girls - they like caring and confident men but they also like going out for a drink and a dance. Your selling point, that you are not rich but won't beat them up, might need a bit of fine tuning.

Off-Topic / Stock Market and Trading Talk [1011]

No that was not my question.

If you day trade you pay a higher capital gains tax than if you hold the stock for a year. Effectively it is just taxed at your regular income tax bracket.

Off-Topic / Stock Market and Trading Talk [1011]

No i don't have any Tesla - not my kind of thing. Big tech stocks I have are Microsoft, Google, Apple, SAP - all have good cash flows and are market leaders. As you know I am more conservative because my day job is in a risky sector in a risky country in a risky currency.

Who makes more money ? Well so far, my stocks have outperformed yours. But let's wait until June

Serious question - not trolling, as a US taxpayer, don't you have to pay income tax on US stock profits if you sell quicker than 12 months?

Off-Topic / Stock Market and Trading Talk [1011]

Well again your ability to pick a winner is remarkable - only a handful of stocks had 4 dollar gains yesterday and only 3 of the top 100. To pick those - Microsoft or Boeing you would have to lay out an awful lot of capital for your 4 buck gain. Not for nervous people like me

But maybe you picked someone obscure like Cincinnati Fin Corp or Caribbean Cruises.

See you in April when we can check our stocks again !

Why on earth would I cherry pick your stock tips ? They have done worse than the market, worse than putting my money in the bank, and worse than my own tips, which I just pulled out of my ass based on whatever shops I drove by on the way to work.

News / Jacek Kurski, the new chairman of TVP (Telewizja Polska) [37]

So now I realize it was a mistake to wander into the Off Topic area. You guys can be pretty weird sometimes.

Maybe I will enter into the JR spirit and post random pieces of good luck, after they have happened. So in 1998 when I had a bit of spare cash I put about 3000 gbp into some emerging India fund. I then forgot about it, lost the documents in some house move and only last year did I track down the fund and cash out at an amazing profit - maybe 15000 after tax. Now I see I was lucky as quite a lot of that fund was in this Adani business and various other Indian things that have been tanking.

Normally I am on the wrong end of these disasters.
