Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

I went to Poland twice in the last 7 years and it was "ty" no mater who was in front of me -

It might not matter so much to younger people but with older people it's showing a lack of respect. Clearly, you don't care if you come across as rude. Ryszard wie lepiej!

Poles should join the civilized nations that know how to use "ty" without causing heads to explode.

I would hardly call the US 'civilised'. It's the land of fruit and nutcases. Unless you take a trip to Poland you'll never have to address any Poles anyway, so why are you whining?

Because you are scared.

I know your mentality and that fear of being reported

More arrogance!!

I don't tend to engage with strangers because I've got better things to do with my time. Get this through your thick head. If I want company, I'll go with a friend for coffee. If I'm on my own having coffee it's because I like it that way. I don't want somebody asking me to join them. Make of that what you want but you're talking out of your arse.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Someone fitting closely to another like a patch to a piece of clothing. :):):

OK, now I get it.

pollinate or zapylać meant rush, hurry, speed etc when I was a boy a few decades ago.

I'm not sure how.....

Why bikers?

They wear embroidered patches on their leather jackets, often it's the name of the club they belong to e.g Hells Angels MC

In the US, we speak freely - especially to strangers. In Europe, you don't because you are either bootlickers or afraid.

Once again that arrogance is on display. You just don't get that Europe is not the US. We are more reserved and we like our privacy.

Memo to Poles: Drop that crap and say: Czy ty... Not: Czy Pan..

So Poles should change their form of address just to suit you? Tosser.

Because they are afraid.

Or just maybe they don't see the point in having a mindless conversation with a total stranger.

You can ask a guy sitting at the next table sipping coffee or beer if he would like to join you.

Why? I would find that intrusive.

Did you just call me "dear"? I really like it. Can I call you sweetie? She gave me a big smile.

Bizarre.

Americans are special and in a very good way.

That is their problem. The arrogance of thinking they are better than anybody else.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

were you aware of that meaning or you had to check it in a dicktionary?? I

Of course I was aware of the meaning! That's what I meant in post 1548, but I presumed you hadn't understood what I meant as you asked " What is a joke?" You could also say, " You're having me on". It means the same thing.

but among 'their own people' they have no inhibitions.

In my opinion they are just more reserved with strangers or people they don't know. I would rather that than fake smiles and have a nice day crap. Personally, I think Poland Expat is just another troll on a rant.

Through the forest?

No. There are a couple of coastal paths near where I live and I usually walk in the early morning to avoid people. I also go to Dartmoor National Park quite often and I tend to pick the more remote areas to walk in:

A couple of pics from Dartmoor:

  • West Mill Tor and Yes Tor, Dartmoor

But what for??

For kids to make them laugh or say something other than tomato, then the game is over. It's also a way of indirectly not answering questions which I'm guessing is the adult version.

it denotes a negative context.

I can't think of anything other than clingy. As in to be like a limpet.

Reading a good book with a nice cup of tea, summer and light nights, walking for miles without seeing another soul, travelling, art museums, the smell of freshly mown grass, baking cakes, Cirque du Soleil, listening to music, decent coffee with a nice slab of cake. That'll do for starters.
