It's a total myth. German was never ever considered as official language of America.
There's a name for it! Thanks, Iron, I learned something. I looked it up and it appears that those who have little competence are much more prideful in their ignorance, while those who have high levels of competence acknowledge both their competence and limitations. I guess you could say it's the difference between wanting to spout off stuff to look smart and wanting to truly understand something.
