Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

I don't think that US founding fathers meant to give us a constitutional right to run around with guns.

F-Stop how were the colonists going to settle the country without guns? At the time of the Revolution America only extended to the Alleghenies's. How were they supposed to settle all the wilderness from the Alleghenies to the Pacific Ocean? Without guns?

Anyway, lets rationalize this beast a little bit. There is one leg of dispute: war time and resistance, some of that I find rational and there is second leg: peace time and self-defence,

Wars happen faster than one can raise an army. Look what happened to Georgia and their little incident with Russia. What would Poland do? What could Poland do, If Russia decided to invade? A bunch of unarmed citizens who have no background in shooting a gun.

What is the problem, and how can it be fixed?

They need to get educated to get the skills to get jobs. There is no tradition of education in the Black community.

Maybe because you're Americans now?

Probably true. Let's see. Couple of 12 ga pumps, couple of single shot 12 ga.

30-06 single shot, 270 bolt, 30 cal. lever, probably more.

Haven't shot anyone yet. Going pheasant and deer hunting later this fall.

Poles aren't ready... they would kill each other, more or less randomly, and the Polish population would shrink even more then it already did....

How come Polish people in the States are able to handle guns?

The suicides are a big part of the problem with guns, too. I read somewhere that great majority of people that kill themselves with a gun would not commit suicide if they didn't have access to it. I was surprised to learn that, but it does make some sense.

Price of freedom. Guns are the great equalizer. It keeps the higher ups from getting too uppity.

the price of freedom

A good example of such a country is Switzerland, where every household has a real, honest-to-God full- auto-assault rifle and ammo on hand.

My opinion is that Poland should resurrect the AK and operate it like the Swiss operate their Army reserves. You would think with Poland's history they would have already done something like this. But Poles would rather depend on political alliances. Just like 1939 and than spend 50 years wondering why they were overrun.

News / Poles are getting rich... [63]

According to the Credit Suisse report, the richest people on the planet are the Swiss, Norwegians, Australians, Singaporians and the French. The average Swiss citizen has an estate worth 372,000 US dollars.

Swiss...it pays to stay out of wars.

USA, Canada / Can a Canadian Female Drive in Poland?? [30]

not every country requires you to have one and as far as i can see, England seems to be one of them.

$15? Looks like an IDP for me. If it's hassle free. If not I'll take my chances.

Gee, I rent a car in England all the time and all they ask for is my license which is American of course. It's different for Poland? I wonder, if I'm only going to be there for a week or so which I intend to do probably next summer and rent a car.

Genealogy / Where in Poland is the town of Laka? [20]

Because I don't have a marriage date they won't give me any information., which is so stupid since that is what I am trying to get. If the first daughter was born 12-1-1907 I'm pretty sure that at least 9 - 10 months before that they were most likely married

Don't be surprised if you find out that your ancestors may have gone to the altar pregnant. So I wouldn't stick to the 9-10 month timeline. It's a myth that the people back than were anymore moral than they are today.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

I know what you mean

^ "Sticks and stones may break my bones, and you are one dumb Polack" - Archie Bunker to Mike Stivic.

you can still get the show on cable or dvd's. It was a popular show. I'm old enough to remember it. All I can is...see it for yourself. YOU BE THE JUDGE.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

Here's the description of the character, hardly derogatory:

Rob Reiner as Michael Stivic. Gloria's Polish-American hippie husband was part of the counterculture of the 1960s. He constantly sparred with Archie (in the original pilot, the character 'Michael' was Irish-American). Michael's character was, in many ways, as stubborn as Archie, even though his moral views were generally presented as being more ethical and his logic somewhat more sound. For his bullheadedness, Stivic was sometimes criticized for being an elitist. While Archie demonstrated the lion's share of the hypocrisy, Michael had, on occasion, shown his own. As discussed in All in the Family retrospectives...

So how come many Americans today indicate this show as the source of all they know about Polish people and all the jokes about them?

The Big Lie on Polish Forum is that Poles in America are subjected to public bashing. A complete lie. Nothing is further from the truth. They were never subject to public bashing. The TV series (1970's) he keeps referring to was "All in the Family" about a bigot who's daughter was married to an American of Polish descent and the theme of the show was that the son-in-law would argue with his father-in-law about being bigoted. The show actually showed Poles to be progressive and open minded.

What?are you serious? You know that the WTC was an inside job ! You did it yourself and then blame somebody else!

Ironside, just look at the thread "What was better in Poland under communism?" The proof is in the pudding.

Yes, WTC was an inside job. Of course. How else could those planes slip through our air defense?

That's what I used to think until i ran across these stories:

The Polish Soviet war of 1920: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish%E2%80%93Soviet_War

And the murder of an army medic after the German occupation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danuta_Siedzik%C3%B3wna

She was murdered by Polish communists not Russians. This must have been going on all across Poland. Must have been a civil war of sorts. The communists on one side and who on the other side???

USA, Canada / Poles and Americans, what do you think, are we friends or enemies? [187]

it’s your stupidity.

No, it's not our stupidity. In America you're allowed to fail. This includes the politicians. Also we (Americans) know two things: we have nowhere else to go and we're armed to the teeth. If we take to the streets we realize it'll get bloody in a very short time and if we throw the bums out who replaces them???

The outcome of the "liberation" by the Soviets, that's another story. It's a known fact that you guys weren't really free and had to suffer under, practically Soviet occupation.

Myth. In 1920-22 Poland was invaded by the Russian Bolsheviks and promptly kicked them out. If Poland was opposed to communism after the German occupation they would have done the same thing in 1946 like they did in 1922. The fact is, the Polish people embraced communism in the 1940's. The Poles lived under Polish communism not Russian communism.

well, Americans don't give a sh!t about Poles and Poles adore to kiss American a55es...

Americans are ambivalent about affairs outside their immediate world. Most of don't even know that there is a civil war going on in Mexico. It's not just Poland, it's the entire world. As for Poles...you know as well as I do that Poles don't kiss anyone'sass. Actually if they would learn a little "brown nosin" they may have avoided an invasion or two.

I'm no fan of Clinton. No fan of Obama but I'm no fan of the GOP either. Heck i'm an ex card carrying Repub.

Speaking of Obama, the idiot wants to put illegal aliens in the milirtary. Now how stupid is that? Paid foreign mercenaries on our soil. Just like the Hessians in the Revolutionary War.

The deficit is the least of our problems as the American dollar is international currency. If we need more money we just print it. To have inflation YOU HAVE TO HAVE DEMAND. NO JOBS NO DEMAND. It's that simple. Look, we've unloaded all of our manufacturing jobs to China, for slave labor. We've handed over our service jobs to India for slave wages. We encourage illegal immigration to lower wages even further. And on top of this we have a ginormous military and wage wars across the globe. All compliments of the Bush administrations (daddy and sonny boy).

You want a balance budget? Put this free market bs to bed. Import duties on Chinese imports, import duties on imported oil, use ethanol and bring our troops home. Anything else is BeeeeSSSSS. It's really quite basic.

In spite of different origins Americans are a homogeneous lot. "Europe on the other hand is not monolithic. Different countries, different language, different architecture, different cuisine, different medical system, different way of thinking, everything different.

grubas

No they do not.Calm down Poles not everyone has to like Poland.

Exactly, you shouldn't feel so sensitive about criticism. Poland is Poland. I like to travel to Europe because it's so different from the States, totally different. And the parts of Europe that I like best are those areas that most reflect the local culture.

Greece, that's what I didn't like about Greece, everybody speaks English. Even the billboards are in English.

Amathyst

Its not hard, its all part of the experience of travelling, if I wanted to hear English everywhere I'd go Margate for my holidays

Nay, the Yorkshire coast. Scarborough, Robin Hood Bay.

History / Let's talk about the POLISH ARMY [79]

Sokrates

Switzerland had mined all passes and was the only country that'd exchange german money

They did what they could to survive. Its called the carrot and the stick.

Poland had a stable govt since PiƂsudski took over

Pilsudski should have focused on stabilizing Poland instead of picking border conflicts with its neighbors. He wasn't that good for Poland. If he was, they would have been better prepared for Germany.

BTW where did Germany get the money to rearm after the German depression of the 1920's?

delphiandomine

Poland just didn't have the money

Yes, but what money they did have they imported too much

WW1 aircraft would have been absolutely useless against blitzkrieg.

No match against Messerschmidt in dogfight but legitimate in ground support role. Besides many thousands were available as surplus after the War. Shear numbers would have minimized deficiencies.

A smarter move would have been to build alliances with Czechoslovakia and Lithuania, as well as granting Ukrainians a great deal of autonomy

Totally agree. But that's what i mean by solidifying borders. Instead Poland was expanding their borders. Getting in border squabbles with the Czechs, Ukys, etc.

AussieSheila

Poland stand no chance against Russia or Germany.

Nor did Switzerland but they survived intact. Of course Switzerland did have the advantage of being well established as a political unit. What were they a 500 year old democracy? Yes it was more easily defensible but so was Austria and Austria capitulated. No it wasn't geography alone it was mainly political. Switzerland was a cohesive political unit, Poland was just starting out.

History / Let's talk about the POLISH ARMY [79]

Discussing Poland's Army. Seeing that hindsight is 20/20 let's look back at 1939 and see how we can apply lessons for the 21st century.

After Poland kicked out Russia in 1922, this is what they should have done.

Firstly, Poland should have solidified it's borders.

Secondly, maintained a large Reserve army (ala Switzerland)

Thirdly, it should have gone out and got as many surplus WWI planes as possible. They could have used the WWI planes in 1939 not as fighter planes but as ground support much like modern day helicopters.

Fourth, manufactured as many armaments as possible (i.e., small arms, artillery, ammunition, etc. don't import).

Polish troops supported by WWI ground support airplanes would have been successful against German blitz. Instead Poland tried to compete with Germany, as a result they never had enough stuff.

How does this apply today? Don't get in arms race with Neighbors. Do what you can, with what you have. forget about nuclear. Invest in aircraft that compliment Polish topography. And manufacture them here. Maybe buy the machinery of the A-10 which isn't being produced anylonger. KISS (keep it simple stupid).
