Life / Will the price of petrol/diesel reach 7 Zlotys in 2011 [58]

The BBC quotes Castro, who said something in some column he wrote. So the BBC says objectively what happened, i.e. Castro wrote a column, and this is what he says.

Wow ... come on ... where's your English?

/news/world-latin-america-12542002

That's not a link! Fidel Castro says this ... come on, warszawski ... give me a break.

"Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro says the US has no interest in seeing peace in Libya but is solely concerned with the country's oil reserves. Mr Castro, in a column published in state media, said it was too early to evaluate what was happening in Libya. But, he said, it was clear the US would not hesitate to order Nato to invade."

NOT allowed to return to Libya on business grounds

He wasn't allowed back on business grounds, but on humanitarian grounds (although the wisdom of this decision can be contested as well - but then again ... so can his conviction of the Lockerbie bombing). To be honest - I am not quite sure whether he did it or not ... 5 months before PanAm 103 there was "this little issue" with IranAir flight 655 ... .

same countries that today want to invade it in the name of human rights.

In which newspaper did you read that we want to invade Libya? I seem to remember placards from the Libyan rebels saying "No to foreign intervention. Libyans can do it alone". Maybe a no-fly zone can be installed, although there is no way of knowing for how long this no-fly zone has to be upheld. Besides, putting up a no-fly zone uses up quite a lot of military hardware (aircraft carriers, AWACS, fighter jets, helicopters, etc ... etc ...) which we badly need in other theatres.

With regard to the price of petrol ... over here we pay PLN 6,80 per liter (diesel PLN 5,70) at the moment and the trend is rising, unfortunately. Therefore you see more and more people stealing fuel at petrol stations. Every year the number of petrol thefts rises with 15%, and with prices like this one shouldn't be surprised if this will increase even more.

I guess this can seriously jeopardize the economic recovery. Transport becomes more and more expensive and in the end, we as consumers will have to foot the bill.

Serbian ultras protest against PM Tusk

And you think that decent Polish people, from whatever political affiliation, are happy with the "support" of a couple of Serb football hooligans?! Man ... that stuff you are smoking must be really potent ... !

Life / Best over the counter flu medicine in Poland? [24]

Check your temp. If you have high fever, do go and see a doctor. Pneumonia is lurking around the corner and you can't get rid of that with Gripex or other stuff you can get over the counter ... in that case you need antibiotics. Swine flu is still around ... keep that in mind. In the Netherlands, of all the flu cases, 60% have swine flu, the rest has "normal" flu.

Two of my friends had swine flu and they were very sick because of it.

So ... check your temperature ... above 103 or 104 F (39.5, 40C)? Go see a doctor.

Otherwise ... get yourself some paracetamol (if your liver is functioning okay) or aspirine or ibuprofen (if you don't have stomach problems) to get your temp down. All this of course only if your are not allergic to any of the ingredients.

Goodbye psychology.

Well ... "Love" ... ;) .., as soon as you are a qualified psychologist, I'm pretty sure you won't get E 6.000 per session ... <puts hand on her shoulder ... do you want to talk about it ... ;)?>

News / Poland's trafficking problem and prostitution [33]

Crossing the borders too often?

Yes ... but only by plane.

And in Germany we are talking about first class international competition.

And expensive as well ...

From The Independent:

"The standard fee charged is about €120 (£100), but some of the women who advertise their services have been known to earn up to €6,000 a session."

News / Poland's trafficking problem and prostitution [33]

while Polki are supposed to be clean.

Not on the border with Germany they aren't ... :-S

I don't know, I would assume that legalising it would certainly get rid of a lot of the illegal trafficking?

Well, yes ... I would have assumed that as well. But unfortunately that isn't true. There still have been a lot of trafficking cases in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. So that's why I can only assume that illegal trafficking is still profitable, although prostitution is legal. And then the question begs how to eliminate that circuit ... ? I haven't got the answer either, I'm afraid.

News / Poland's trafficking problem and prostitution [33]

Good point, Sean. In the Netherlands and Germnay prostitution IS legal. The sex-workers have a union, pay taxes and in Germany even get welfare benefits. But unfortunately, there remains an illegal circuit where trafficked women are forced to work under the most horrendous cirumstances.

So ... what to do about this illegal circuit? It obviously still pays to traffick these women otherwise this circuit would have died out automatically.

News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

What questions are they asking about how the controller conducted himself during the approach?

Didn't he urge them not to land? And didn't the pilot decide to go against the controller's advice (he obviously did cause he crashed the plane into the ground)? Or did I miss something? As long as there is no hard evidence to the contrary, I will continue to believe that it was a simple matter of CFIT. A phenomenon which is (unfortunately) no exception and which happens even to the best pilots (especially in fog, or at night and without the aid of "modern" instruments).

The article BB showed says something different, if you ask me. First there was a property bubble. Nowhere do I see IMF or EU bankers mentioned. I can only conclude that you are wrong in your assessment.

Law / Zloty lifts Poland's Economy [43]

From what I heard in the news, Ireland got bailed out by the rest of Europe. So why is that "getting screwed"? They didn't have their finances in order and the rest of Europe is bailing them out (as we did with Greece - and God knows which country will follow). Could you care to explain?

Love / 20% of adult Poles are single and live with Mummy! [241]

I wonder if they statistically live at home, but actually work abroad

Why not? You apply for a job in the Netherlands or where ever. You are hired. You have to give your home address and you give them your address in Poland. Then you rent a bed on the local camp site (dekarekiet.com/karekiet-home.html or aandelinge.nl/fr_index.html?/comforthutten.html) in some trailer and you are good to go.

Flat share?

Theoretically possible ... but you'll have a waiting list as well. Especially in regions with a lot of migrant workers and/or students. Costs about 300 to 450 euros a month.

low end job market is completely gone in the Netherlands

Pretty much ... my neighbour is a welder, got laid off a year ago and can't find a job anymore (he's 39). A lot of welders over here are Polish. On a side note, I've heard that most of the welders in Portsmouth (where they build British naval war ships) are Polish as well - they've been laying off British workers and replacing them for Polish. In the village where I live we have two big distribution centres, one for a major super market chain and one for a chain of stores for hollow-ware: mostly Polish personnel. We have several transport companies: Polish, Czech and Lithuanian drivers. A couple of non-brand car garages: Polish personnel. Honestly ... when my wife is here, she can speak Polish all the time. Even the owner of the local off-license is learning Polish, so she can talk with her customers. We had one hotel in the village ... it has been closed down now and filled with Polish migrant workers.

How about university, is it possible to get a loan

Yes, convex, it is ... but to get there AJ first has to finish his VWO, which will cost him another couple of months, as we've learned here.

are you open to moving to where the jobs are?

Most people are, and I'm sure AJ is. The problem is finding a house to live in. Suppose even you get a job somewhere ... then you can go to your local housing association to apply for social housing ... the waiting list is about 5 years.

With weapons and explosives training how about something with homeland security? Airport screening? Bomb squad?

Not anymore, TZ, I'm afraid. Even if AJ would fit in the age category, we don't hire anymore. In fact, we will be laying off 15% of the entire force between now and 2015 (as thanks for all our services in war zones - sorry, that was a personal, spiteful remark). About a year ago we just finished laying off 10% (which was too much and we had to hire again :-S)

Don't knock McD's

Over here you see people in their late teens, early twenties working in McD. And those frying the hamburgers don't even speak Dutch.

Would you work minimum wage in Aalsmeer pushing around flower carts?

What you don't know, convex, is that if you have Amsterdam between your home and the place you have to go to, getting there by car is pretty much impossible. Yes, we have a lot of motorways, but Amsterdam by car during rush hour is as far away as the moon. In the time I lived in Deventer and had to travel to Amsterdam (100km) by car, it sometimes took me three hours. At the moment I use the train to go to my base, so I can tell you from my own experience as well that the trains run late by default. And besides, in Aalsmeer you'll probably have to start around 0400-0430 ... the trains don't run that early so a car is absolutely necessary.

And it is true, what he says: most "simple" (and even the not so simple) jobs are occupied by job migrants, so it's really not that easy to find something.

I'm afraid I can relate to what AJ is saying.

Well ... yes, actually. JaDka and Od Nova did make an impression. The food is good (I have to mention the tartare in JaDka - superb! And the venison I had was wonderful. My wife had the duck and she was extatic about it!), very friendly staff, the wines match the food, wide choice in both food and wine and very reasonably priced. Haven't been to Abram's Tower recently; when I was there about a year ago, they were still in a start-up fase. But the location is quite special.

If you want to see the local artists and actors, go to Marché. The food is okay, but don't expect wonders. If you wanna have a huge and tasty salad for lunch, I'd recommend Marina on ksiecia Witolda.

both at spice india and masala

I have to agree with you.

The first time I came there, the food was really very good. The second time, they obviously had another chef and it wasn't as spicy as I had liked. Also the nice, round flavour was absent.

I'll be in Wroclaw tomorrow. I might just go there again. I will post my findings late in the evening.

By the way ... the geezers I saw in the kitchen the first time, were Pakistani. I didn't see who was in the kitchen the second time.

So I just returned from a dinner in Spice India (and a jolly nice drink with convex).

The food was really good this time. Not overly spicy, but nice rounded flavours and a nice hint of heat. \my wfe had the chicken pollak (chicken in spinach), I had the lamb in spicy tomato sauce, accompanied with garlic bread and rice with vegetables (peas and carrots).

I had two glasses of Rioja with it, and it kinda matched the food, although if it had been more spicy the wine would have gotten lost.

The waiter was a very friendly guy and I noticed him speaking English in the kitchen.

So this time (the third time) no disappointment. It's a pity they are not more constant in their cooking ... it's a little haphazard, unfortunately.

1. There is Marché on the corner of Pilsudskiego and Powstańców Śląskich (50% off after 2000 or 2100 - some kind of buffet, but with a difference)

2. There is Spice India on Wita Stwosza
3. There is JaDka on Rzeźnicza
4. There is a nice Italian restaurant on ksiecia Witolda (forgot the name, sorry, could be called Marina)
5. There is Oregano on the corner of Kuznicza and Igielna
6. There is Od Nova on Pawla Wlodkowica (next to the synagogue)
7. And you might want to try Abram's Tower on Krainskiego, a little difficult to find the entrance, but have a look at their website or their facebook-page.

I'm sure the PF-members from Wroclaw can tell you a couple more. So ... how many days do you have ... ;)?

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [533]

they can't even have street names and signs in Polish, even though it is a normal practice in Europe

Are you sure Torq? In the Netherlands we have areas were the majority of the people are Turks or Maroccans. And in England there are areas where the majority are Pakistani or Indians. In France there are districts where just about everyone is Algerian. You can find similar situations in Germany, Belgium and Italy as well. I can't see why the street names and signs in those areas should be in Turkish, Arab, Urdu, Hindi or whatever foreign language.

But maybe this is a very sensitive subject indeed.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

@ TZ: Aha ... so if you don't know anything else to say, you are out of your depth and you feel that others outsmart you, you resort to this tactic. I should have known ... you were the one who started with simple discussion tactics in the first place. You've lost, sunshine. There are no two ways about it. Rant all you like ... I for one know what you are.

Now the big question is, what drives those firearm deaths? Why are New Zealanders twice as safe as the French with the same number of households with weapons (from the chart)?

Good question convex! General character of the people, their disposition, their mentality? Their education? I dunno. Do you have an explanation?

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Automobiles kill far more people than guns. Shall we ban them next?

Jee ... talking about simple reasoning. This pretty much beats everything. Come on, TZ, don't let people think you are a complete pea-brain. Try to keep up appearances at least. You didn't come with any argument whatsoever with regards to your contention that fire arm ownership has no relation to fire arm deaths. The only thing you could come up with is this ridiculous comparison between fire arms and cars. Give me a break!

You and Stu seem incapable of grasping the fact that cultures raised by single parents are the problem (once again, not all). That's why I pointed out the murders within a segment of the community. That's the root problem not the inanimate gun.

Come on ... don't be stupid. Inanimate guns ... HA! Guns are always in the hands of people. Saying that guns themselves don't kill people, is in itself correct, but fails to address the fact that guns are always USED by people and thus are deadly. According to your logic, the same can be said with regard to your argument about cars. So you want to do the racial talk. Fine by me: let me give you a comparison. In the Netherlands we have quite a lot of racial (or religious tensions) as well. You know ... muslims and christians? Still ... look at the graph fstop provided. It has nothing to do with race, religion or whatever ... it has to do with the availability of guns, no more and no less. And ... still time to get out of the Netherlands? ... jee, look who is talking? I wouldn't want to live in the US for a million dollars.
