News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [332]

Russians in dehumanizing terms..

Dehumanising.

Perhaps if Muscovy stopped their orcs raping women and children, looting, abducting whole families from Mariupol, destroying theatres (using thermobaric bombs) full of cowering women and children with 'children here' painted in huge letters on the roof, seizing Ukrainian children for 're-education' and shooting (mostly elderly female) civilians with their hands tied behind their backs people would have a better opinion of their society, 'culture' and nation.

irrational hatred for Russia

Nothing 'irrational' about despising people who do all of the above

I never ask questions I don't know the answers to.

Pointless really.

part of the UK - is not even a Ministerial department

It isn't meant to be, as well you know. Its independence in carrying out its day to day duties is a key part of its operation. The government (who own it) could change that in a stroke and it is accountable to the people's elected representatives who make all senior appointments however the whole point is that it operates independently for very good reason.

As well you know.

it's private and 100% beyond the control of the UK government and citizens

Neither of those are true. It isn't 'private' (and hasn't been for 60 years) nor is it beyond democratic control. See above.

Stop trying to pointlessly argue; your comments are bar room level. You lost the argument you tried to start so cut the burble. You're trying to derail a thread about important matters in Poland. Things that don't affect you but do affect many who post other read here.

A debate loser is a loser

Yes, you are. Unfortunately you don't want to accept that.

Anyway, you're drifting off the topic of inflation in Poland. It's a very serious issue.

if it's from ECB it must be true

As true as you'll find, since they're the second largest Central Bank in the world and do actually have to be careful about what they say regarding economic conditions in Europe. Unlike yourself who can and does shoot his mouth off (often in a foul way) for the sake of trying to be contrary.

as expert on economics

Unlike yourself (also not an economist) I have to live with economic decisions in Europe and it's hard to see what's inaccurate about describing your comment that the world's second largest Central Bank is a "never-audited, private, accountable-to-nobody bunch of swindlers" as untrue. Since it is of course untrue as well as pointlessly argumentative as well as yet another example of you embarrassing yourself with your deranged drivel.

Your pointlessly rhetorical question about the Federal Reserve? Other clowns have asked that here just as a clown is asking it now. Why not google it? I just did, and the information you crave is on their website: federalreserve.gov/faqs/about_14986.htm

How do I know if these words are feminine or masculine

Practice and a few signs, like ending with -a or whatever though there can be exceptions.

how do I know which letter to use?

These old soviet monuments are only a phallic representation of a domination claims ovet the whole area

I said much the same a while ago about that dreadful one on Zwirki I Wigury.

It's not a grave, those are there too and much more discreet. It's a symbol of r*SSian domination of Poland and it's high time it was repurposed as rubble.

Life / In Poland on holiday - need help with bad case of homesickness [108]

but less busy coz residents have gone on holiday

Warsaw is always nicely empty in August, especially at the weekend. It's one of the nicest times to walk around the city. About homesickness, empty streets can sometimes be quite disorienting however whenever I return to the U.K. I notice the older winding streets and realise I miss them a bit. Perhaps that's happening to Lanka in reverse.

Nothing depressing. Sellers of goods and services bid down all the time. Labor is no different

Wages going down isn't depressing? Get a grip on yourself, troll, that or stop trying to argue with your betters for the sake of it.

Learn some manners and I may engage with you.

supply of money in Poland

The current inflationary trend is not limited to Poland.

Now go away and learn manners and try to keep less of a contrarian. It's boring as things are now.

Is it? Technically there are jobs for anyone who wants them... but they often don't pay enough to support a person on their own

Much the same thing. So-called ''trickle-down' monetarist economics only seems to involve money 'trickling' upwards.

an entry position that could turn into something better.... was it?

Very much so. When the business was eventually sold, some of the contracts (that weren't included in the sale) went to her and she still has a couple. They paid for her house.

I suspect the applicants who were trying to undercut each one in a so of scab labour way were jus desperate for any office job. I was depressing to see, especially as they were embedding photos (despite the ads saying not to) on heir CVS. Some of the photos were beach ones in bikinis which suggested how desperate they were and what held be prepared to do to have a job.

Vladmir Putin

He's certainly a factor in it, given the rise in manufacturing costs and in retail operating costs since r*SSia's illegal and unprovoked invasion of one of Poland's neighbours.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

another train which connects me to Warsaw Chopin Airport

Trains to the airport go from Warszawa Centralna at the moment. They also usually stop at Warszawa Zachodnia and often Warszawa Wschodnia and although Wschodnia is the most user friendly, it's the furthest from the airport. Centralna is larger and closer to the airport. If you buy a ticket from Gdańsk to the airport, the website will make it clear where you change.

Worth mentioning that there are major building works and Centralna is connected to Śródmieście Station or was when I last travelled by train there a few weeks back. If this is still happening when you travel, you will know about it when you buy your ticket and any changes shouldn't inconvenience you.

Alternatively, a taxi from outside any of the main stations in Warsaw to the airport is not expensive. The cheapest journey there by taxi is from Zachodnia however that station is a nuisance if you have heavy luggage or mobility issues.

Maybe they didn't have the required qualifications

There weren't any. Only experience and the ability to use Word and Excel. It was a basic clerical job however most of the applicants were graduates.

Remember unemployment is high in Poland and was even higher then, plus of course Poles often have a general lack of solidarity for their fellow worker. It can be a bi5 of an 'every man for himself' place.

How do they stop it, do they get to vote on an interest rate increase ?

They (or slightly over half) voted for a populist party who dislike interest rate rises. In Poland, consumer credit levels are high and rising so interest rates are unpopular across society regardless of how people voted. There have certainly been rises (several in 2021) however the government is unhappy about further ones.

Do people in Poland really have a say about interest rates ?

Only at the ballot box.

I suspect there will have to be significant rises however given many people's level of indebtedness, this will be problematic, especially in the run up to an election.

It would reject him as quickly as most people in Poland would reject an interest rate rise as a counter inflationary tactic.

Or it has to do with the fact that communism was

Some people say that however the Hungarian writer Georg Mikes who last visited Poland in the 1930s describes much the same back then.

the gini coefficient, and the vague feeling that people are getting a fair go

Worsened since the PRL ended and now of course Poland is cursed with the gig economy. I advertised for admin staff a few years ago and put the salary in the advert (unusual in Poland). I was sad to see the number of applications who said in the cover letter that they would do the job for less than that, trying to undercut others. Quite depressing to see and a sign of desparation.

champagne socialist

Having modest savings earned through work makes someone a 'champagne socialist' does it? That would mean millions of teachers, factory workers, doctors and nurses are swigging champagne.

And the real estate company investment was a grand's worth of shares (a champagne socialist could maybe buy two or three crates of champagne at most with that) in a company that rented out office buildings in Spain. Deliberately making profit from housing lived in by people of average income or below is of course immoral.

You don't have to like capitalism to put your savings in it. Decent people don't like white privilege either though few would be daft enough to turn it down if they get any.

And when inflation here in Poland or elsewhere (caused in part by capitalist exploitation of labour and economic mismanagement by governments who favour the rich) erodes savings, there's nothing wrong with protecting your retirement savings from that.

Life / Poetry and Poets of Poland [58]

Since this is about poetry and poems connected to Poland, it's worth mentioning that in one of his filmed pieces (A maybe day in Kazakhstan) he writes about Polish exiles there. Unfortunately it's hard to find since he himself apparently doesn't rate it. Two of his works are available in Polish translation, Kumkwat dla Johna Keatsa and Sztuka i zagłada.

For many years (long pre-1990) he lived in Prague where he taught literature at the university.

Life / Poetry and Poets of Poland [58]

There was one American poetess

Stevie Smith was an excellent British poet. An occasional poster here went to the same school as her, albeit decades apart. Her work is quite dark sometimes and often has religious themes however she's certainly one of the greats.

Toria Garbutt is an interesting poet. I'd never have thought I'd like someone described as a 'punk poet' however I like her stuff. She's fairly local to me and it's good to hear poetry read out in my own accent,

meat and bones needed for a good poem

One of the finest living poets in the English language (perhaps even the best) is Tony Harrison. He uses themes from classical mythology and blends very traditional with contemporary. His translations of Moliere were so good that they were translated back into French. If Ant likes 'meat and bones' as mentioned above, he'd find plenty there. He is also a playwright, again drawing on classical traditions.

His poem "A cold coming" about the first Iraq war is particularly well-regarded. I've seen it reduce people to tears when read out. And his filmed poem "Black daisies for the bride" (filmed in an old-fashioned hospital for dementia sufferers) is considered an important poem. He's done several pieces like that one where he combines the spoken word with film and music.

When his best known work, V, was televised in the 80s various minor right-wing rentagob politicians were hugging and puffing in parliament before the TV transmission because it contains some obscene words (the poem was written after his parents' grave had been graffitied by football hooligans). You'd think a conservative would like it since it's very much in the classical idiom and is quite anti-modern however it turned out that none of the huffing and puffing Tories had actually read it before criticising. This produced a famous riposte. One of the sillier conservatives (Gerald Howarth) said; "Probably another bolshie poet wishing to impose his frustrations on the rest of us".When told of this, Tony Harrison replied that Howarth was "Probably another idiot MP wishing to impose his intellectual limitations on the rest of us"

He must be well in his 80s now. He was married to the opera singer Teresa Stratas for many years. I've met him several times (in connection with his plays) and bought him a drink now and again.

The poem V is easily found online however I recommend the 1985 TV version where he reads it out. It's on YouTube in full. If you've a few minutes it's very worth watching.

do you know what to look for? Some porcelain cup from China might seem priceless

This is key.

Generally finite things of relatively low value. When silver prices went up, so many high quality items were just sold as scrap and boiled down. Collectors wept and now things have stabilised, the value of existing craft silver has gone up due to scarcity.

Oh f*ck. Is it a map of Guyana

Mauritania, or at least the very short lived English gum trading post there. Finite in number, a niche item, and I think a good thing to hold on to.

Just for fun, go to the next Sotheby's or Christie's show next to where you are

The trick is to go to small town shipping auctions in the countryside and sell in the capital. Or was. Antiques have become the national hobby in some ways and it's much harder to do nowadays. With antiques, short term it's a lot about where you buy and where you sell.

A few years ago I bought an eighteenth century map on eBay for just short of 100 quid. It was the first known printed map of a particular country that's about to become oil rich. There were fewer than 200 printed and I notice that there are a couple on sale now for several times what I paid.

If you get it right, it's great against inflation. Especially if you don't get too attached to the stuff and are happy to sell it on.

If I had the time, energy and money, I'd be looking at the best of the PRL-era furniture and the few luxury goods produced in 1950s Poland. You used to see things like that at Banacha market though sadly not now.

Gold is the worst for that

Which is why farmers use spades and deep holes ;-)

Another good thing. Avoid all the "Forex" sites like the plague. These are essentially criminal operations

Absolutely. The more an investment scheme advertises, the worse it is. Crypto ones too (even especially); so many are essentially Ponzi schemes and their websites are fiction.

Your point about retail investing is spot on. About REITs, I did buy into something similar and it actually did rather well.

One thing that helped my family through the high inflation years of the 70s was, oddly enough, antiques and art. Back in the 50s and 60s you could buy a Dresden vase for a few shillings on a market stall and a decade or so later sell it for hundreds. Now, 6 decades later, they fetch thousands. Plus, you had the pleasure of looking at it while you had it. That boat has largely sailed now though.

Happened in the PGRs and can happen again

That's actually a good point. Worth saying though that farms in the U.K. are larger than those in Poland (enclosure acts and post-war rationalisation plus geography/topography) and many are private farms that are closer in size to a PGR than most farms in PL. In the U.K. a three or five hectare farm wouldn't be considered a farm. It would be a smallholding (I grew up on one) with little or no state input except in times of war or crisis and sadly no subsidies/incentives either.

Bonds

I know people hove done well with that and a retiree who bitterly regrets putting their lump sum into gilts.

I very nearly bought bitcoin when it was so new it was almost valueless. A couple of hundred quid in it back then and I could probably buy Garfield Weston out now.

eventually farmers will stop large scale farming

They'd have to have a degree of choice in the matter. With a nation's food supply, a nation is entitled to call the shots about how productive land is used or walked away from. That worked pretty well in the U.K. pre-single-market. In Cuba, Poland, Ch8na perhaps not so much due to the way they did it. Our U.K. farmers were certainly richer then than since like doctors 'forced' into the NHS, we drowned out their objections with very welcome cash.
