Too late, your answer is invalid after me telling you the answer.

We could play again if you like, I will get three more contestants and you can tell me their ethnicity, right?

I could do this all night but it feels like I am just teasing a child.

Funny how you picked out people that don't look typically Polish

Congratulations you got 0 out of 3.

No of them look Polish, anyone who knows what i'm talking about would agree with me, if i'm wrong, then why can I and just about anyone else tell what ethnicity someone is just by looking at them??????

Either that, or you're a dumb Polack.

Son you have some serious issues, or you get offended too easily, he said nothing for you to say that twice.

I am saying that we are people, with mixed up DNA, that when you talk about ethnicity I think you are talking about something that just doesn't exist in real terms. And when I talk about nationality it is more like culture.
That you can't tell a Pole from a Czech in reality (DNA) but if you speak Polish you would be able to tell the difference in language (culture).

But Poles have some outside admixture but it's almost perfectly evenly distributed, a lil bit of German, bit of Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Jewish, Russian, all mixed well with the original Slavic genes, and there is a face of a typical blond Pole, a brunette, or dark haired, there's like 3 or 4 looks to an ethnicity when you see it you know what someone is.

Can you tell if someone is half Polish? what about a quarter? what about a Polish Lithuanian?

hahahahaa, a half Pole or quarter Pole isn't a Pole, but only half or quarter. Even if he/she is half something very often they look fully or mostly the other ethnicity, so it didn't make any sense what you were trying to say.

Ethnically, Poles are a mess, but nationality wise, they're clearly Polish.

Really? i have no problem distinguishing a Pole from a non Pole, there is something as looking Polish

I suppose that's why we use the term "dumb Polack".

Woah!! he didn't say anything for you to use language like that, and if you think we're dumb or Polacks why are you in Poland??? say that to someone on the street

Homeland Security estimated that out of some 20 million illegals in the U.s, 18.5 million are Mexican, now i wonder how many of the remainder 1.5 million are non Hispanic and how many are non white, and finally how many are white?? maybe half a million, how many illegal Poles are there?? i'm guessing few, i see very few new faces from Poland in my neighborhood, Poles don't come here in large numbers no more they go to Western Europe. Can make more or less the same money, be there legally like human beings, not watching out for the authorities, and board a plane for 50 euros go home for the weekend to Poland.

Genealogy / Jewish Roots of Poland [638]

This looks like a long an intense thread.. I will have to read the whole thing..

I will say I am an Polish/Belorussian/Ukrainian Jew who was born in USA. I am about 3rd generation American..

It's true that many American Jews (those who descend from Polish Jews) identify themselves as both Jewish and Polish and that's all fine, there's one in my neighborhood who on a huge flag pole has a big Polish flag flying all year round, only takes it down for the Jewish holidays putting an Israeli flag up for a few days. And there's the ones that blame us for what happened to their people on our soil, as if it's all our fault.

how many have mixture of polish with some other nationality. -> I have no kids but my entire family is a Swedish/Norwegian/Polish mix (the kids that is)

You must be from Minnesota or Wisconsin as there are many people of each of those backgrounds in those states. It depends on which region of the States one lives of course, in general Poles mixed mostly with Irish and Italians, same religion was important when choosing a mate.

The Lithuanians are to pass legislation which will eliminate 2/3 of Polish schools. Poles are not immigrants in today's Lithuania like some posters here compared Pakis in UK. You need to understand that first. These kids will now have to go to Lithuanian schools. Let's say they will be allowed to speak Polish during breaks. Wow.

Exactly, they didn't just arrive there in recent years, they've lived on that land for hundreds of years, at one point that WAS Poland, like it or not. I like it how the Polish government isn't letting this slide and is keeping the pressure on.

But many Polish Americans resent being grouped in census reports as just 'whites', when other groups (Afros, Hispanics, Asians, Amerindians, etc.) are getting special perks and privileges based on ethnicity.

In the last census there was no column to write in or check Polish, or Irish, or German, just white.

Going by the name, I was strongly assuming it but obviously the name itself is not always showing one's origin and if then it's going so far behind that the person really doesn't know of any connection whatsoever.

True there are English Americans in the South, who are descendants of some of the first settlers came there in the 1600 or 1700s, they've been there for so long they're not sure where their family came from, so they just identify themselves as American.

Exactly, i was born in Poland moved here when i was 9, yet some on this forum had the audacity to call me a Plastic Pole, since i don't live there no more. I of course feel more Polish but since i've lived here for so long and am a citizen of both countries i also feel a bit American.

Isn't it two very different things?

Well technically if you're an American citizen you're an American, of Polish descent, doesn't matter that you're not American born. Some people see it that way some don't, at least on paper it's that way.

He was a Polonized Lithuanian nobleman just like 99% of the nobility around Lithuania/Belarus/Ukraine. They all embraced polish culture.

Lithuanians polonized on their own not by force, Lithuanian nobility admired their Polish counterparts, as Poland was the wealthier and stronger military of the two, thus having more influence, the Lithuanian nobles over time became more Polish than Polish nobles, clothing, music, food, faith everything.

by 1791 Poles made a move which would change that sad state of affairs, they attempted to reform their system of government, and accepted on the 3rd day of May - Constitution !

True, those nobles who betrayed Poland saw what exactly it's neighbors were doing to Poland united with the patriots, and passed the Constitution, but by that time it was already too late, Poland was a big but very weak state, involvement in foreign wars, little foreign trade for decades weakened the vast state, at the same time its 3 aggressive neighbors though taxing its citizens and trade, had large professional standing armies.

in 1791 Kingdom of Poland and Duchy of Lithuania by the parliamentary act of their representatives become one and undivided country

That was at the very end of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealths existence, it was a desperate move to try and save the country by uniting the people. Since the early 1700s a secret Prussian-Austrian-Russian alliance set at weakening Poland took it effects, they did as little economic trade with them as possible, no military alliances, constantly interfered in it's politics, bribing Polish and Lithuanian nobles to pick kings that would favor one of them or all. By 1791 Poland was basically a vassal state.

Umm i'm not so sure, he means native as in originally from that land they live on, Poles have been living there since the late 16th century (Polish nobility bought land) the common people moved in large number at the beginning of the 19th century, so for at least a couple hundred years. Yet no Poles are native to that land, no Polish (Slavic) tribes lived on the land that is today Lithuania, just being fair.

Lithuania

Poland should just bring these 210 thousand or so Poles from Lithuania and 400 thousand from Belarus back to Poland if it really cares for them, it's just a matter of time before they're all assimilated mixing with the general population. A million Poles left Poland in recent years, these newcomers many young would fill their places.

Poland snuggling up to Russia on the back of it's neighbour??? ;)

Well i think good relations with Germany and Russia are far more important to Poland, not just to have peaceful relations with those two, but economic benefits. Lithuanians mistrust us, during the Polish-Soviet War (Bolshevik) of 1920, after driving the enemy back, Polish soldiers decided to just 'take' Vilnius while they're there, and incorporate part of Lithuania into Poland. Then Soviets annexed them in 1940. They have they're reasons.

Lithuanian minority, much smaller has all those rights in Poland, Polish minority the largest in that country doesn't, both EU countries, that is discrimination, Lithuanians claim it's to protect themselves from being assimilated, the Polish and Russian minority are about 6.5% each give or take, i doubt there gonna assimilate the Lithuanians, Lithuania isn't occupied by any nation it's a free EU state, there is no threat to its sovereignty or national identity. If Poland gives the Lithuanians full minority rights Lithuania should also., not use some cheap excuses.
