UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

i stand by organ harvesting. you know how rampant of a problem it is here. don't try to pretend that organ harvesting doesn't happen here all the time. and baby smuggling too.

What gives you that idea?

I honestly haven't heard of any such organ harvesting and if I google it with Poland nothing comes up but I generally don't know anything about this subject.

What makes you say it is rampant?

It is more probably that he drank too much and woke up in a drunk tank.

Real Estate / Apartments too expensive for Poles living in Poland [54]

Milky you are in Ireland which has the second highest minimum wage in the EU, after Luxembourg.

And has one of the most expensive property markets in the world

(wranked)11 Ireland Dublin 9,069Dollars

In 2004 it was about 40 cent per hour i think.

Nope the minimum wage for 2004 after tax was 602,77 per month, divided by 4 (to get week divided), by 40 to get hour and you are left with 3.76 PLN

minimum wage 2010 is 984,15 per month (do the same math) 6.15 per hour.

Real Estate / Apartments too expensive for Poles living in Poland [54]

Most older Poles still have their apartments from communist times,

They are still alive, for the most part as it was only 20 years ago.

young couple who still live with their parents or extended family

living with mom and dad.

The amount of people who live with their family, here in Poland, is much bigger than many other European countries.
The sheer size of the houses here tells you that they play "The Generation Game" whereby 4/5 generations of a Polish family live together.

What most discovered the best thing to do is have a baby and then ask for handouts.

Hand outs from who or what?
The government doesn't have any form of handouts that you could live on well if you could get a job and family's are usually on a tight enough budget.

Of course families support themselves here but I would not call them handouts.

Maybe this should be changed to New apartments too expensive for poles

I would change it to "New apartments in the centre of cities too expensive for most Poles yet there are alternatives in the suburbs where housing is the same price as a small flat in the centre and with all the new roads it is easier than ever to get into town".

However I will concede that this title would be a little too long :)

Real Estate / Apartments too expensive for Poles living in Poland [54]

I believe you have misinterpreted the information but the artical is so badly written I have trouble myself fully understanding it.
I think the first problem is it just pushes figures and doesn't compare them to anything else.

I suppose 80% are ready to purchase!

It is not 80% of Polish people that are going to buy real estate.
From the article it is 80% of people that wanted to buy in the first place.

come on the Property rise!

I don't think prises will substantially rise or fall.

I think the article itself is misleading or just not well written:

As many as twenty percent of Poles who were planning to buy an apartment in 2009 abandoned the idea, shows a report by Gfk Polonia and Nowy Adres.

20% who were going to buy didn't

Almost 40 percent of potential buyers resigned from buying an apartment last year because of high prices, even though real estate prices dropped slightly during the economic crisis.

Now it is 40%

Twenty-three percent of people mentioned high interest rates of mortgage loans as an obstacle to purchase their own apartment, 19 percent did not buy because they were refused a mortgage and 14 percent because they were afraid of losing a job and not being able to pay back a loan.

23% plus 19% plus 14% is 56%

Add them all together and you get 116%

It could be saying that of the 20% that did not buy 40% of those did not buy because of W, 23% because of X, 19% because of Y and 14 % because of Z.

Which still only makes up only 96%, if it said that 4% is due to other reasons fine but it doesn't.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

Right now Poland has the best BNP-growth in Europe.

I am sure the British National Party has not got that much growth in Poland right now ;)

So about 80posts ago, why didn,t someone just say, these 2nd hand clothes shops are aimed at the poorer members of society ? ........ simple.

I did, remember? you even quoted me on it.

interestingly enough, in wealthy countries, the rich buy from farmers markets and second hand clothes stores...and the poor buy from supermarkets and shopping malls.

It has been mentioned several times on this thread that famous rich people buy second hand clothes.
I am not familiar with this practice but then again I don't know many famous people.

Polands economy is supposed to be super, so what hardships ?

What lack of money, Poland has the best economy in europe.

You are confusing growth with a strong economy.
Poland is getting stronger but it is still quite poor in comparison to many countries like France Germany and England.

Many people here do not have much money and buy from farmer's markets and second hand clothes shops.

The appropriate response is no response.

Hahahaha.

By responding to TIT’s skewed statements the members of this forum are promoting, perpetuating his biased views.

Or if you read the thread you might find we can debate and talk about our different view points.
I think not discussing issues offers no form of education or insight at all.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

I don't think so for many people in the context of this thread.

Here is a man who thinks that buying new clothes means he is ''free'' and that people who buy second hand clothes are ''slaves''.

This to me is a form of mental slavery and I do not think there is much worse slavery than mental slavery. (no offence Tit, like your opinion I have mine and on this topic we do not agree).

I am not saying that money is not important, for we have given it that but I do not think you are "free" just because you have it.

Do you just like "new" things? Would you buy at an outlet store?

In fairness to this whole topic, we are blasted with commercials for a lot of our waking lives, since we were kids.
It has turned many people in to magpies, in the sense they like bright and shiny things.

Perhaps I am saying blame society not the individual, our critical thinking has been stripped to a certain extent and replaced with consumer culture.

Many citizens of developed countries buy new things and what they buy are designed to break so that people can go out and buy more, whole industries and economies are built on this strategy.

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months. (Oscar Wilde)

Evian

Ever spell that word backwards?
The result is very interesting :

''Evian'' backwards is ''naive'':

1. having or showing unaffected simplicity of nature or absence of artificiality; unsophisticated; ingenuous.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

I was at a meeting around a big oak table.
Not everyone had arrived so we were waiting.
One of the men took off his watch and put it on the table boasting that his watch was gold plated, had diamonds encrusted at each hour and was worth 10,000 euro.

Another guy from the other side of the table asked, "what time is it?".
"It is now exactly 3:14" the first man proudly bellowed out.
The other man said "that's strange because my watch cost 50 Euro and it says the exact same time".

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [110]

I buy what I can afford, with good quality and with sense of fashion and I feel as a free man , not a slave

I think it is strange to equivalate consumerism with freedom and people who obviously can't afford new clothes with slavery.
It seems like you are saying you pay for your freedom with money.

Pieces of cloth sown together, when properly washed, are just pieces of cloth sown together.

So to answer your question
Why so many Poles use second hands clothes?
Lack of money.

Travel / Poland wildlife and similar wild life where you live. [243]

I have been seeing lots of pheasant recently.

Pheasant in Polish is 'Bażant'.

There is a very good player that I have not seen before on Wiki, it plays a recording of the sound the bird makes, Common Pheasant.

Love / How do Polish boys feel about foreign girls? [163]

Evidently you think Im a bit thick! degrade, disrupt, deny, destroy?????

So what is a typical D4 girl like?
And how is that you know nothing of traditional Irish women?
Nothing to do with stupidity just experience honest.

It wasnt all ex cons Sean, that was a very small percentage...

what percentage???

Well, seems like you still havent learnt how to spell such a simple name or are you such a rude person?

You'll figure it out someday :)

Why should I welcome him warmly if he starts his first post in such a negative way...

And what did I do?

Im happy to give some nice advice for those that are genuine..

It is true you can be very nice and even likeable at times.

You're living in Aus, had it not been for Colonialism, you'd not be enjoying the country it is today! Look at the phone book dipstick and you might find that a large proportion of the names are English...

Unless he is an aboriginal Australian.

And just out of curiosity are the prisoners sent long ago there also meant to thank you?

As to "traditional" Irish and Scottish women, I have no bloody idea what you are talking about, they are independent women and not exactly what I'd call "traditional" in any way shape or form...This isnt a slight on them, far from it.

Just because you have no idea what he means does not make his post any less.
He compared them to D4, yet another thing you probably know nothing of.

.Whats wrong with wanting nice things??? As long as you keep family first and dont lose sight of what is important, then there is nothing wrong with it...I work has so I deserve my treats!

I agree.

Oh Shelly :) I will always remember your cold venomous nonwlecome when I first joined here, seems like only yesterday :)

History / remember, forget, forgive, blame ... Holocaust Memorial Day in Poland [229]

I was watching it on television and reading in the newspapers about the 5.4 million that were systematically killed in the Congo.

I am not going to start an argument with you but watching T.V. and reading newspapers is very different from experiencing the holocaust.

How did you experience it?

I didn't experience it. More deaths in Congo than any other conflict post-WWII: survey..

Life / Recycling and the barter system in Poland [5]

what do you mean?

The can't run a landline so by law they have to pay me.
Actually they just offered me a radio line, which I don't want but it stopped them from paying me any more.

I would put the stuff I wanted to get rid of by the garbage bin with a little note

In London they are very good at that, people make a living off collecting, tables sofas TVs etc...

History / Polish historical myths - to break or not to break them? [257]

We probably all lie to our selves about what has happened and not just as a country but as individuals but we are not talking about that, are we?

We want to look at the great things our countries have done and say "Yes, I am a part of that!" and ignore the negatives, cover them in myth or hide them, it only takes your little finger to block out the sun.

All of American except for the immigrants were born in America! Just ask any guy in America where he was born! xD lol

Well lets bring it home a bit, Norwegians tried to wipe out the indigenous Sami culture.

Ireland has it's share of wrong doings also but we won't talk about those ;)

My point is not to offend, my point is that perhaps many people need these myths to feel good about themselves because most countries at some point through their historys are guilty of some wrong doings and we do not want to see ourselves as guilty.

For example did the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth simply expand and form this huge empire.
Were the territories that became part of this Empire willing or were they taken by force?
I have only heard and seen how great it was, surely armies were sent out to kick ass?
I am not talking about Lithuanian and Polish agreement but the other lands they conquered.

History / Polish historical myths - to break or not to break them? [257]

Americans/Europeans one and the same in this context.

No they're not.. they haven't been one in the same for hundreds of years.

That's not true.
Modern day Caucasian Americans are descendents of Europeans. I am sure you know this.
And we are talking about the killing of native Americans, which Europeans/Americans did do.

C'mon Mick tell me how stupid I am.

Ah, I see now, you are just a dick, ah well.

History / Polish historical myths - to break or not to break them? [257]

I think this one is a modern day myth Irish welcome on Polish building sites ?.
It just makes no logical sense, why would Polish people put up a sign, in English, in Poland?
Irish people have not come here to look for jobs on a building site.

This myth has been added to, like a game of Chinese whispers.
I was told by a taxi man in Ireland that 2000 Poles walked off site in Poland because an Irish man walked on. Apart from having an over inflated opinion about himself, it is just pure lies, that just wouldn't happen.

But where I find the interest is how willing people are to believe it. I even thought it could have been true myself but this shows more about how we feel than what actually happened.

Ireland was a poor country (it certainly did not benefit from the British Empire) and it became rich over night.
Money became the only conversation people had any more, greed unseen before to this extent, had come in full swing.
Polish people were working hard and some Irish people were making a lot of money from it.

This myth has the sentiment that a Pole went to Ireland worked his butt off, got stroked by the developer and told an Irish person to get off site because he was treated badly.

Irish people automatically sympathise with this mythical Polish person, it kinda does relate to the British Empire.

History / Polish historical myths - to break or not to break them? [257]

Irish benefitted for centuries on the blood of the English empire, via jobs, investments, whatever..

You are going to have to educate me here, what are you talking about?

It is like saying slaves benefited from slavery.

The strange thing about your and Barney's argument here is that at the time, you were Europeans.
Americans/Europeans one and the same in this context.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

I'm actually not really clear on what you meant by that last statement

I was just messing but now that you mention it there is something about you being Polish and living in Norway that used to be a huge problem not so long ago.

When Poland was communist and commies were seen as a treat to our cultural values, freedom and lives.

if you imported 1 million africans to Poland

Well who imports a million people for starters?

no coloured people in Poland = No racism, lot's of coloured people in Poland = Lot's of racism!

North Korea have a terrible immigration policy, do they have racism?
