Travel / From Krakow to Auschwitz (transportation) [29]

Hes a grown man and can make his own decisions, he doesnt need you telling where he should or shouldn't visit

Which he's asked about on an open forum. Who the hell are you to question why someone gives their opinion here or anywhere else? Either you're having a very very bad day or there's some other problem, WB. And what makes you think I'm telling him "where he should or shouldn't visit["?

Why did you visit the place of crushing horror?

I had visitors from the UK, very old friends whose grandparents were there.

Travel / From Krakow to Auschwitz (transportation) [29]

Yes, I was thinking about it this afternoon. If he goes to Zakopane, it's a nice day out, pretty alpine views etc; but Zakopane isn't anything special at all. A fourth rate ski resort full of tourist traps. Auschwitz with the whole crushing horror of the place is something he'll remember all his life.

So I reconed we wouldn't need a organized tour for that as well?

Not really - though an organised tour there would mean the bus driver spoke English.

can I get local transportation and just join a guided tour there

Yes. It's quite easy to do, even if you don't speak Polish. But think carefully whether or not you really want to go there; it is an unpleasant and disturbing place.

Study / Rumor about racism - will I be fine in Poland as a black International student from Africa? [245]

Since it's net, 900 Euros is OK in Glinojeck. There isn't much to spend money on there! The nearest place to study would probably be in Warsaw (I don't think there's anywhere in Ciechanów). There are plenty of places, not just Warsaw University or the economics school (SGH), but other institutions (called Wysza Szkoła). The prices of courses vary a lot in Poland. A friend is finishing his Masters' at this one (wsbif.edu.pl), but I'm not sure if they do anything in English. Kozminski certainly do, as well as PWSB.

This article may be useful for you. It's about MBAs, but has a good list of institutions: Good luck, and enjoy Glinojeck!

Study / Rumor about racism - will I be fine in Poland as a black International student from Africa? [245]

My main place of work will be in Glinojeck,gm.Kondrajec Panski,Poland

At the sugar plant?

Generally the people in Poland aren't especially racist and are generally polite, but be aware that Glinojeck is quite a small town with small town attitudes. Having said that, British Sugar employs a few foreign people, so you won't be alone. If you are black, people will notice you and stare, but that doesn't mean they're being rude - it just means they don't see many black people.

You didn't say if the 900 euros was net or gross? Assuming it's gross, that's ok for Glinojeck since accommodation is provided, but you'll have to live quite frugally (easy in Glinojeck) to be able to save a good amount. If it's net, it's not at all bad for somewhere like that. Visits to Warsaw are easy from there too.

If you are living in or near Glinojeck, you may be able to give private English lessons, since there is a shortage of native speaker teachers round there (and the sugar plant was having problems finding any).

It doesn't seem a bad offer. If I may ask, what kind of work do you do?

And all this sort of stuff for those who take it all very seriously, or just want to have fun. Warsaw isn't Tunbridge Wells...

What??? What are they doing with socks and trainers?

Far more than the maker intended, as far as I can gather.

Also a lot of catchers rather than pitchers.

Life / St Patrick's day in Poland [272]

There used to be Morgans. Not just in Warsaw but in Krakow and Poznań. Morgans was in the cellars of the Chopin Museum on ul. Tamka. The Poznań one was between the Rynek and my flat, but never really took off much.

History / Polish pirates [58]

Ignacy Blumer (O'Bloomer)

An interesting guy.

Searching for him, I found this, about some other Polish pirates - a big surprise! I suspect very few people, even in Poland, know about these guys. You learn something new every day: magistravel.pl/en/piraci.html

Language / Special Polish Prayers / (Funeral too) that stand out [12]

[Moved from]: Condolences in Polish

Can anyone suggest something to write in Polish as a condolence. It should be a one-liner. The deceased was an 88 year old retired lawyer. I never met him, but know his son and nephew. The son has just invited me to the funeral via facebook, but I can't attend.

There is that. A bit like Bahrain where there are European-style pubs on the 10th floor of a building.

I wonde where else there is to go in Warsaw now Morgans and that place by Metro Wilanowska are gone. I think the Irish Embassy staff go to Bradleys sometimes, which is a bit of a seal of approval. Do you know what Legends is like?

History / Polish pirates [58]

especially in South-East Asian waters, and they are brutal murderers.

It's certainly getting worse month by month off the coast of Somalia. A real problem. And the Somali pirates are getting bolder. Certainly none of them are Polish, but some of the crew members taken by them are.

I have to do a course soon about what to do if attacked by pirates. Should be interesting, but I hope I'll never need it.
