News / Poland's LBGT Seen as Dangerous Foreign Idea. [39]

They can write the will and name anyone as the beneficiary like you or me.

Not really the case in Poland.... as anyone who is actually Polish would know....

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Polish shops - the fictitious supply chain

It's a lot better than it used to be.... and the problems can be traced back to the PRL and its horrifically dysfunctional and corrupt supply chains.

In the 1990s most stores worked on a variant of the old 'job lot' system - if they needed tea or coffee they got whatever they could find at the hurtownia and when that ran low they got more, not paying attention to anything like brands.

It's only since some time after 2000 and the rise of chains that keep track of what brands sell and what doesn't that any continuity has been able to be established.

And since the public is used to different and changing brands they mostly don't think of brands except for a few areas....

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

but there's nowt of any interest

British food appeals to Poles about as much as a cheeseburger does to an orthodox Jew.... it's not even anything they recognize as food.... (same goes for American food, I tell people you can actually eat very well in America if you know how to avoid the processed junk.... but hardly any ever believe me)

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [442]

I was basically hounded out of my last job by Poles.

No. You were hounded out by a British government that wants as many people as possible working for as little money as possible. Your government doesn't see you as a citizen (or subject... whatever) it sees you as a resident who doesn't need anything like workers rights and who is not entitled to government services..

If Brexit happens that won't change - they'll just replace Eastern Europeans with whatever other foreign labor can out-compete you economically while not being entitled to government services.

It is a question of taste.

Yes, for me gorgonzola is the all time king of cheeses... stanky and nasty and glorious.

Britain holds top spot for variety of and class of cheese, maybe tying with France

Włochy might have a thing or two to say about that...

History / History of two Neighbors: Poland - Germany Interrelations [283]

I'm not sure fertility can be explained in measures of wealth only.

It's societal.... when women have more autonomy (and get a taste of life beyond babies and the kitchen) the birth rate drops. This applies even to Iran, during the Iran-Iraq war women kept the country going while the men were getting slaughtered and the birth rate afterward fell like a stone in water.

Compare westernized urban Turkey with sub-replacement rates with the non-westernized and non-urban Kurds....

This doesn't apply to Africa where Africans behave as they've always behaved while non-Africans moved heaven and earth to improve health conditions...

Not to mention rapid population growth is an all but certain precursor to war - Syria more than tripled its population in something like 70 years making self-destructive conflict all but inevitable (also see Yemen the only part of the Arabian peninsula capable of rapid population growth - which Saudi Arabia responds to by starting a war to kill off some of the surplus...

History / History of two Neighbors: Poland - Germany Interrelations [283]

One problem is that infant mortality has been brought down almost entirely by outside actors and factors and the underlying behavior has remained the same. In most of the world the decline in infant mortality coincided with greater wealth (itself the result of changes in the culture and mindset of the population).

It's the population equivalent of Saudi Arabia which became rich without having to make any effort (and so it withdrew into tradition and stagnation).

Africa has had (and still has) outside help in becoming the worst governed region on the planet and there's no evidence whatsoever that African institutions have any hope of dealing with the coming much larger populations than they have had so far.... so many individual Africans will seek out better government in Europe... African and Middle Eastern migration to Europe is largely about wanting to be governed by Europeans rather than Africans or Middle Easterners..

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

you are annoying me now.

that's his whole agenda... he writes crap to push people's buttons as an end in and of itself, resist the temptation to respond that bothers him far more than anything negative you could write

Life / Polish people and TV Series - so good and hilariously spot on :) [99]

There've been a couple but the format never really caught on...

The two hosts that come to mind are Wojciech Jagielski (and his 'evening with a vampire') and Kuba Wojewódzki who first became famous as the mean judge on the Polish version of Pop Idol (I forget what his show is/was called)

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

the West was planning to make a deal with Stalin about the future of Poland which was to become Soviet

Given the love that MN (malignant narcisssist) has for love he should have been overjoyed at living in a soviet controlled puppet state....

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Poles were simply convinced that Soviets would continue their offensive into Warsaw

Number one rule of the Soviet army: When you don't want them.... they're there. On the rare occasions when they might be of some use.... they are oddly absent...

How do you know Warsaw insurgents weren`t aware of the risks?

Wasn't their biggest mistake trusting the Soviets? Never relax around, trust or turn your back on Russian soldiers.. hadn't Poland learned that by 1944?

PiS are bigger leeches than PO ever was.

Some people are paid to pretend this is not the case.... PiS stinks of old commie boss ways of doing things like not following binding court orders

History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [250]

if you went into a 'milk bar' (bar mleczny, or stolowka)

Two different things...

the silverware was chained to the table...

Myth, doubtless caused by an iconic scene (one of many) in Miś...

No one wants to guess the film form #105?

Again, a hint: The title of the movie references an event an important anniversary of which was celebrated this year....

History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [250]

loves to explain to all fanatics of communist times that most Polish sound systems were obsolete and of poor quality..

During my first visit to Poland (PRL for a couple of months) I decided to buy a new radio since none was supplied in my dorm room. The price was pretty hefty for PRL wages and I intended to give it to a friend when I left.

Anyhoo.... it worked fine for a week or so and then the tuning mechanism broke, after a few days the friend I was going to give it to managed to get it fixed.. partly. I could choose between four (Polish) stations... which was better than nothing I guess.

Quotas were always exceeded - at least on paper.

Even if they were.... why would this be good? That was my point, simply producing more without considering how it is needed is kind of dumb...

On the other hand, the communists at all costs avoided 'over production' of consumer items which is why nobody could find anything.... it's over production that makes it possible to always be able to buy things like towels or combs or pots and pans etc...
