Life / Polish fences - complete anthology [74]

Have you ever been to the Polish seaside?

Yes, such as it is.

Those winds can be really chilly,

I come from an island in the North Sea, near to the east coast. Now that's bracing!

You can hire windbreaks there and people sometimes do hire one (but only one and never have their own) however they'd not be used as a barrier for privacy etc.

a completely fenced beach:

Very sad.

I've long said that if Poles or Czechs could reserve a seat on the tram or bus to work, some of them would.

him write.

Indeed. He shows that he misunderstands the current causes of inflation.

And it's likely to get worse due to the interest rates pre-election.

Every time I go shopping here the prices are higher.

UK, Ireland / London is Poland's 24th largest city [85]

That doesn't sound.... good.

It's not.

There are oases of calm there if you know where to find them, however you never quite find peace.

I was there for a couple of weeks last month for work and found it very hard going. There again later this week for a couple of days and will be glad to get out.

It's still interesting however the good bits are outside Zone 1 now. I did hear quite a bit of Polish spoken though not in the centre. Most of the post=2004 migration are either in the provinces or are in London but can't afford to do much in Zone 1.

Worth reading. If you count London as that which is within the M25 (the orbital road) it's still huge. I'd also include places much further afield as the Financial Times article does. They say 25 million which is in. my opinion. on the high side however it's certainly closer to a megacity then. any other on the continent.

Very different places and on a smaller scale. In Berlin's case, very much smaller.

London (in terms of travel to work area) now pretty well reaches the south coast and the North Sea, and what were once leafy suburbs now feel like a city centre.

You can walk around streets in Central Berlin that feel peaceful and quiet. Fat chance of that in London.

As you can see, this is also a way of life

An old one and a somewhat scuzzy one.

I wonder if they also steal from tramps or sell hair for wigs.

History / Ulma family beatified for heroic Christianity during WW2 [35]

One thing is certain they wouldn't act that this way if not for their Christian faith

I'd say that people of any religion or none caan do the most exceptional thing, however the ethics code that comes with religion does help, providing someone is serious about it, as they evidently were.

Protestants took a big step

As far as I know, it doesn't make that much difference.

In fact there is something in the water that specifically Poles and Catholics were taking those crazy, unresonable, dangers

It was happening here, and there were people who stepped up at a time of need. Most didn't and some did the opposite.

The Ulma family however, did an immensely brave thing.

UK, Ireland / The "Paracetamol Myth" - Polish people hesitate to visit UK doctors. [51]

You know this sketch?

Very well indeed. It's a sketch that launched many quotes.

And I've known people like that; Palin certainly bad them on a particular type.

is that hospitals are for diagnosing and treating people and saving lives, while spas offer some treatments that can improve your health/condition somewhat and help you relax,

There can often be quite an overlap in some places and not all hospitals of course are general hospitals.

it provides employment.

You had employment?

We had to get up at 1am every day, walk a thousand miles, clean the equator with our tongues and drink from a puddle before going to sleep at 3am.

especially if it's some Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental type place.

I was thinking more about traditional spas like the 'sanatoria' in Poland that people get sent to. They do some amazing things. I was wondering if another poster knew that one which is probably my favourite.

Usually, I do the rounds on the steam room, dry sauna, cold plunge - then go in for a massage.

Always good. I used to go sometimes in Turkey and also the UK before that. They always make people feel better.

The difference between the spas in Poland and hospitals (which in some places they'd be referred to) is one of nomenclature. I've been to one myself and liked it. Some employ nurses and do quite a range of treatments.

String pulling does happen; I've known doctors who've had to wangle a stay for themselves.

Do you know the spa at Ciechocinek?

Polish hospitals because the food there is legendarily sh*tty

It's egregiously bad however at least you can have food brought in or order it for delivery to the ward.

isn't

It's not a courtroom and he mentioned spas. Very relevant and interesting too, The spa system is one of the more specific characteristics of the Polish system and generally works well.

If you believe in God, such act make sense

It does, and you don't have to have particular religious views.

The fact is that they did something that was the right thing to do and came at enormous cost to them. Most people whether Poles or any other nationality would probably take the easy option.

Polish retirement plan law

Quite. There's no reason it should be standardised across a whole continent, and if it is, it should be standardised according to the average rather than to suit one economy with an aging population.

Very unfair anyway that women get to retire earlier yet live longer, especially since the heavy work is increasingly done by people of either sex or any gender.

But a twenty-something woman ...hey, easy target

A multi millionaire sports player with a PR machine and sponsorship deals behind her. Poor lamb.

Now reflect of the twenty-something women unlucky enough to encounter r*SSian soldiers who've invaded their villages in Ukraine.

Do Poles check into hospitals as if it were a spa in the south of France?

In Poland you do get that (though it can sometimes take a bit of string pulling). Basically a visit to a sanitarium ever few years and it is much appreciated and part of the healing process for people with various illnesses.

Otherwise, hospitals are something to avoid here.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

500+ have been introduced in 2016 while inflation increased only at the end of 2021

Things take a while to kick in and spending patterns as a result of the (excellent) decision to introduce child benefit do change with time as a society becomes more prosperous.

result of numerous different factors:

Greed by businesses (wholesale or retail) too, charging as much as they can squeeze out of every transaction.

result of the war (increase of food & oil prices

This is a huge factor too, and 500+ a factor though a lesser one.

Ulma family

More stories like theirs need to be told. Selflessness rather than selfishness and being firm in the worst adversity rather than fleeing and looking after number one.

Altruism is what separates us from lower species. People often forget this.

There's unbeliever (negative) and non-believer (neutral). There's also unchurched however that is rare nowadays.

not necessarily meaning contempt

That word isn't generally used nicely in English. Nowadays it's probably mostly ironic by the public at large or nastily by religious fundamentalists. Heath and the German word heide are related.

pagan

That's more a religion nowadays.

dumb village dwellers

More people outside villages who are a bit wild.
