Food / Healthy polish food? [143]

Gherkins

Not really. Their vit C content is only 4 mg per 100 g, while sauerkraut`s nearly 15.

sorrel

Also useless coz always eaten boiled so most of vit C is destroyed in the process of boiling.

most prefered by my kids - as sauerkraut mixed with carrot in a salad.

Sauerkraut saved millions of Poles and Polesses from getting scurvy in winter time when fresh veg and fruit with vit C were unavailable in the past.

I like this salad but my wife makes enough for herself and kids so not much is left for me. :):):)

It is both sour and sweet - my fave.

History / German Sprache aka speech in Polish films [19]

Film Psy - Dogs. The time is after the collapse of the system. An ex communist secret service officer, a Pole, now a drug dealing gangster, meets his German rivals whose background is Eastern German Stasi secret service. They are discussing their drug business.

In German, of course.

Not as much as outsiders think.

Johhny is right . Cabbage is used extensively here. Fresh, boiled in bigos or kapuśniak soup or most prefered by my kids - as sauerkraut mixed with carrot in a salad.

Cabbage (kapusta) is used in a lot of the Polish cuisine

Good you mentioned it. A few days ago a workmate who also runs a small farm apart from teaching brought me 4 cabbage heads. My wife turned it into fresh green salad and boiled cabbage which is excellent when used as a side dish for Polish fried pork chop.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

Austrian partition area

yes, it was the poorest of all and hugely overpopulated so the land was divided further and further by

brothers inherited they divided the bits

until large chunks of arable land became minute strips. Today some small farmers own a few of such pieces of land scattered all over the area.

kind of holdover from German farming?

More exactly, it is a result of taking over ex German territory after WW2. The communist state became the owner which established state farms there. They covered immense areas.

Food / Healthy polish food? [143]

I cut down this plant in our veg plot twice a week, put in the jar filled with water and then regularly use up leaf after leaf.

What is this healthy thing?

Language / F... off or GTFOH used in Polish contexts [14]

Another cult occurence of GTFOH:

Franz Maurer says it to Russian gangsters and their Polish mates, after strafing down their boss with his AK rifle. And they obey immediately.

History / Why do Polish people hate to be called Eastern European? [120]

Why do Polish people hate to be called Eastern European?

Decent intelligent patriotic Poles and Polesses do. While rightist parties` voters don`t care how they are called. As long as they get their monthly benefits and some booze every day, they agree to being called whatever you wish.

News / PiS` magic tricks - the first budget without deficit in Poland [39]

electricity price rises in the second half of 2023.

Lies as usual. Mr Honourable Prime Holy Minister Donald Reverend Tusk`s gov commenced their rule in mid December 2023. And they didn`t introduce any price rises then.

Ireland has a different climate than Poland.

Last winter the lowest temp in my area was -20 C. And it is a regular occurence coz two years ago it was -18 C.

While the lowest temp ever recorded in Ireland was - 19 C in the year 1881. Amasing!!!

when apricot trees started blooming in March,

Apricots bloom the earliest of all fruit trees in Poland. And there is a huge problem with pollination and blossom/young fruit survival in early weeks of spring when it is still very cold. That is why after buying only one tree in 2015 and getting zero fruit, I planted another one in 2019 and still nothing although they grow close to each other. I eventually ended up with 5 trees of different varieties which grow within 5 metres from each other to enhance the pollination process. And this year I have seen young fruit for the first time in my life. WOW!!!!

sadyogrody.pl/owoce/101/jakie_czynniki_warunkuja_skuteczne_zapylenie_kwiatow_moreli,1158.html

Fruit set in basic varieties is lower with the distance from the pollinator. - The research found that even in the case of apricot varieties grown in the closest proximity to the pollinating variety, a larger amount of fruit is located on the side of the pollinator - said a representative of the Institute of Horticulture. He added that pollinating varieties usually constitute 8-10 percent. all the trees in the orchard.

According to Dr. Sitarek, when pollinators are placed in rows, the distance between them should not be greater than 20-25 m. This means that with the most frequently used distance between apricot trees in orchards being about 3 m, a pollinating variety should be planted every 7-8 trees.

criteria which you gladly apply to Polonia. :)

If you mean my critical attitude to Polonia whose members are mostly rabid rightists preoccupied with abusing and insulting decent patriotic Poles who still live in Poland proper, then yes - I proudly admit - I use different criteria to you and the Poless like that one above. Coz you are two different kinds of people. Completely.
