mean the hotel/apartment building they have had on hold since over a year ago in the center of town?

More this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vistula_Spit_canal

Here's a story on the event in question:

Wow. PiS is already at least as disconnected from the electorate as PO was in 2015... maybe more since they can't cooperate with anyone and only talk to each other...

And... I think (a bit optimistically) that the days when they could win by promising more handouts have passed, their tarcze (how to translate that?) have been ineffective disasters. For a short time it seemed that coronavirus was the best thing that could have happened to them but they squandered that in their senseless drive to hold sham elections, ineffective relief policies and the scandals related to the Szumowski family.... I'm sure that people who don't support them will simply say ""PO was just as bad!" (since they can no longer really say "PO was worse!" with a straight face).

people will blame PiS for the economic downturn, instead of act of God

I know of former PiS supporters that have been turned off by their obsessive jihad to ram through elections without proper preparation (legal and physical) and their supposed protection plans are a laughable and ineffective mess...

And the shady business dealings of the Szumowski family (talk about going from from hero to zero)

PiS has never created anything good. they briefly capitalized off of good times created by PO (whatever else you think of them) and have done nothing to actually improve the economy or make it more impervious to shocks....

Polonia / Polonia in Germany [59]

No Ukrainian lands "became Poland after WWII"

I'm just talking about official state borders and find long arguments about Polish or Serbian or German lands to be incredibly tedious....

minority rights between EU member states with freedom of movement are all that justified to begin wit

The idea is essentially stupid....

immigrants can't be granted minority

Around 2000 or so there was a move by some Vietnamese in Poland to receive some kind of minority recognition. It made sense since there were several times more of them than all the official minorities put together but it didn't go anywhere.

The whole issue of Vietnamese immigration was hopelessly bungled by successive Polish governments across the political spectrum...

do the Ukrainians have minority rights in Poland?

Ukrainians from the areas that became Poland after WWII do. Current migrants don't.

One of the reasons that there aren't more problems with Ukrainian economic migration to Poland has been precisely because they don't agitate for the state to accommodate them linguistically.

Some signs are put up here in there (more likely in Ukrainian than Russian though they usually speak Russian to each other) but those that bring their children want them to receive education in Polish and not have classes in Ukrainian or Russian at taxpayer expense (that I've heard of).

he closure of the borders did nothing but remind them that Poland is a foreign country to them.

I remember an article many years ago about Hanna Mlynkova that make that point. Her father had been a militant Polish.... culturalist within Zaolzie but had no interest in visiting the country that was 50 or less kilometers away.

When she went to study in Krakow it was a completely different version of Polish culture than what she'd grown up with....

Also by the by, I just watched the very good Czech comedy series Dabing Street (about a down on its luck dubbing studio on the outskirts of Prague in 2001) and one of the actors had a Polish name (Marek Adamczyk) but seems completely Czech (I was looking to see if there was info on him in Polish and couldn't find anything)....

Complete misplacement of assets

Well to be fair, that's pretty much what has happened (and is happening) in all countries.

The government however, rather than seriously think of how to mitigate the catastrophic economic effects of the the pandemic expended all its efforts into trying to force through some kind of "sham" election to keep the pliable puppet Duda in place.... so there's that.

Here's an article on how empty the promises have been regarding one sector (restaurants).

Duda can't survive job loss and massive inflation at the same time

Well, he can if PiS is successful in pinning the blame on Tusk (I'm not kidding, what else do they have?)

Failing that they'll play the "Those mean other candidates are going to take away your free money! Are you going to stand for that?" card, cause again, what else do they have?

Jewish Rule and LGBT apocalypse

What interesting thoughts must be running around in your mind.....

Konfederacja ... several strong personalities who have their own agenda

Was talking to a friend who hates Bosak on principle (for his stupid identity politics) but has been positively impressed by his approach to economic issues.

But, ultimately I'm sure Korwin-Mikke can be counted on to undermine and sabotage any sensible policy issues that konfederacja might have and drive it back to anti-democracy and loser identity politics positions... he seems to be a Russian puppet whose agenda is to bring Poland back into the Russian sphere of influence.

my prediction will be war with Konfederacja on the part of PiS

I'd say that's already started... JK cannot stand the idea of any opposition whatsoever (his neo-PRL worldview can't tolerate dissent or differing opinions).

History / What is Poles opinion on Intermarium (Międzymorze)? [188]

I'm pretty sure if it hasn't opened yet..... no, it's never gonna open... (let it remain unfinished as a reminder to Germans that yes, they can screw things up too and maybe should be a little less judgemental...)

I like Tegel and have mostly positive memories of flying there to take the train to Poland (easier at the time than flying to Poland direct)

I even like it despite one horrible experience (had to stay overnight in early summer and they shuffled us all to a small waiting room that was too hot and too crowded and too uncomfortable)....

especially since the Polish r will sound like a t between vowels to Americans (if jamiej is in fact American)

the American pronounciation of 'city' is close to syrij (using Polish spelling)

If you are seriously thinking about it

Well earlier this evening Budka was on tvn24 blasting PiS for spending so much to print ballots for an election they _knew_ could not take place.... so, there. is. thatttt.

It was a pretty boneheaded move. PiS's sick obsession with running a PRL style sham election during a pandemic was sheer hubris (along with the usual dose of PiS corruption and cronyism).

News / Poles say a big YES to our European Union [996]

while younger voters are much more internet savvy

The only time the young vote went to PiS was when they put JK and AM on ice and pretended they were becoming a sane Christian Democrat party with Szydło in charge (who seemed to be growing into the role of a party leader who resonated with a lot of the public)... that lasted until two seconds after the election and they lost the youth vote.

I think so too.... but that day is many years in the future....

I'm wondering if forcing K-B out was to force the government to print new ballots so that their poor and terrible planning and reckless spending could be made into a campaign issue....

German criminal nazi past is your soft side it should be used effectively as a political tool

The more likely short term effect is to convince Germans to get over it at which point it stops being an effective political tool and becomes a liability for those who try to use it....

Life / Do Poles watch Turkish soaps? [6]

The first one of them all in Poland was "Isaura".

Also a weird point on Isaura.... it was repeated a number of years ago but the dialogue wasn't in Portuguese but rather a version dubbed into Latin American Spanish with the Polish voice over on top... very weird, does anyone know if that's what was originally shown on Polish tv?

"Isaura".

Brazilian not Turkish....

Wspaniałe stulecie (about Suleyman and Roxelana) was the first big Turkish hit in Poland, there have been others since... One friend's mother has given up latin american soaps for Turksih soaps...

calling Bulgaria little Turks is offensive

Well there's a large genetic Turkic component (obvious to anyone who spends any time there and who isn't blind0

We hate Turks

Is that why Zhivkov led the reprehensible anti-Turkish movement of the 1980s?

Asia but not to Poland

It's a threat to Australia, Italy and Canada.... why would they spare Poland (unless Poland simply has nothing they want)?

a Polish-American US security advisor, who entraped them in Afgan War

That is certainly a chapter that begs for re-examination, no matter what else the Soviet Union was or did they were in the right in Afghanistan in trying to bring something like civilization to a bunch of deranged mountain goat fvkc3rs...

I've heard from more than one source that Afghan students studying in Russia and other Iron Curtain countries were all on the soviet side - they knew how messed up Soviet communism was but _still_ thought it was a vast improvement on Afghan culture which is incredibly violent and ugly.

Oh and the people Brzeziński backed took exactly the wrong message - it wasn't "God bless the USA for helping us get freedom" it was "with Allah in our side all the world fears our power!" which was a directly pipeline to 911....

Because Poland is not Russia nor China

How do Russia and China treat countries that fall into their "sphere of influence"? What would prevent Poland from falling into one or the other's sphere of influence?

No wishful thinking or platitudes, please. What concrete policies would you have to keep the Bear and Dragon from Poland's door?

Merged:

PiS ruining national stud farm - Tusk to blame?

I tried finding the old thread devoted to this and didn't. so......

Remember Pride of Poland? Apparently PiS thought that a "good change" would be the systematically destroy what had been a profitable international brand through a political witch hunt and its standard practice of appointing loyal but incompetent party hacks to positions of power.

Apparently the Stable at Janów Podlaski is being run especially incompetently now but rather than deal with that PiS nomenklatura are still trying to dig up dirt on people who haven't been associated with the stable for years...

full story here:

wiadomosci.onet.pl/lublin/stadnina-janow-podlaski-na-dnie/xb6mrxy

I eagerly await the usual suspects to blame Tusk for PiS turning a high prestige international brand into a money losing sink...

History / Origins of Polish Slavs [139]

@Zanko

IIRC Bulgarians are a largely Turkic people genetically who happen to speak a Slavic language (though there's a lot of genetic diversity there just as there is in western Turkey).

Also, IIRC genetic research in the 1980s showed that over 90 % of Hungarians are the descendants of Slavs and Germanics who were magyarized.

I'm not sure where Romanians fit in... physically there's a lot of variation with obvious Germanic and Slavic components while the language is Romance (and part of the Balkan Sprachbund)

Narrow genetic nationalism is a chump's game in that part of the world which is one reason why the Serbs (who bet the most heavily in that direction) have been and remain the biggest losers, ignoring their crappy present and gloomily contemplating past glory (that didn't happen) or dreamily imagining future glory (that won't happen).
