Maybe someplace, the point is that Poland has a unified terminology for various levels of local government and administration and "English" doesn't (and sometimes single countries, like the US, don't).

Also i wouldn't be surprised if the constituent parts of the UK had different systems (not to mention Ireland which probably has its own system).

I prefer 'municipality' though that's not good either.... for me commune still has hippy overtones...I kind of like 'community' but that's not specific enough and prone to other misunderstandings - in general it's hard to translate Polish government terms into English because a translation that works for one place won't work in others (not just countries - local government terminology tends to vary a lot from state to state in the US as well, I've heard 'community' used as a form term in some states but not in others....

Many people oriented toward life in the PRL really don't understand how thin margins are in most businesses....

If someone buys 500 zl worth of clothes in a foreign owned store they actually think that that's 500 zl leaving Poland.... economic illiterates is what they are.

Oh and PiS is planning mass lay offs after the second round.... so not only have they totally failed smaller business owners with their tarcze they're just hankering to massively increase the unemployment numbers....

As much as I relish the idea of the PiS bottom feeders turning on and devouring each other.... I think it's more down to more people getting sick of PiS and their cack-handed incompetence, a bad campaign (again it was Szydło that made him president) and the fact that in 2015 he was the hunter... now he's the game.

I saw about three seconds with a screen caption about 'treat gays like human beings today.... and gay adoption tomorrow?!" (not the exact words but the impression it was trying to make).

At this point I'm almost hoping Duda wins so that PiS has to fully own the economic problems that are on the way and can't blame anyone else (though dimwitted PiS supporters will obediently blame ..... Donald Tusk? I guess)

If you look at his properties... it's obvious he has working relationships with gay designers...

But in 2016 one reason he destroyed the republican competition was withdrawing from their established anti-gay and anti-abortion positions, he gave anti-abortion some minimal lip service but nothing more.

And again it would be bad optics in the US for the country to get behind a country engaging in openly homophobic rhetoric... that's a headache he doesn't need.

That's just the thing - the anti-homo stuff was of no use to Trump (who doesn't care about that kind of cultural issue which is why he's president). It would be bad optics in the US to get close to a country that ramps up the anti gay rhetoric.

I'm sure all Georgette did was say "Andrzej, you need to choose. Do you want to keep bashing the queers or do you want US support? You can't have both." (in much nicer diplomatic terms, I'm sure). And Duda (or more likely JK) chose.

Exactly, you can't simultaneously affect attitudes of 'none of your business!' and 'please protect us!' (and be taken seriously)

To be clear, I'm not necessarily glad that an ambassador has such an outsized influence but... on the other hand, compare her to the EU. The EU huffs and puffs and goes into endless committee meetings and powerless rhetoric and is generally completely ineffective in modifying PiS policy, Georgette knocks on the door and gets more done in a couple of days than the EU has in six years....

I think generally Czech women are often very.... German looking in terms of style and body language (the men far less so and are generally closer to Polish norms).

You really like Duda and want more welfare handouts and more favors parceled out to party cronies?

Why would anyone let him do that? PiS is awful economically, they blundered into a boom they didn't understand or appreciate and are exposed and feckless when real economic savvy is called for.

Duda has gone all in with them, let him reap that.
