In general, I think that gay rights are a wonderful civilizational advance (recognizing that non-conformists have a place in and can contribute to society as well).

That said, there are aspects of some fringe lgbt issues that I'm not comfortable with but it's impossible to discuss here because most people can only argue with empty slogans and not with ideas.

I'm not okay with drag queen story hours (which several sexual offenders have taken part in...) Drag is entertainment for adults not children.

I'm not okay with the current transgender movement (which is incredibly regressive and/or insane).

I'm not okay with legalizing polyamory situations

I'm not okay with normalizing the sexualization of children (not just a lgbt issue - some of the worst offenders are heterosexual men sexualizing pre-pubescent girls or even worse the girls' mothers)

LGBT issues were only a kind of sideshow in the recent election, which should have been a home run for PiS but even with the entire state mechanism openly campaigning for Duda (in a really unprecedented way) it was a squeaker. Not a good long term prognosis for the health of PiS (which has no chance in h3ll of surviving JK.

As our resident malignant narcissist points out.... his brand of..... Christianity apparently does not disapprove of domestic violence as long as the victim is prevented from leaving the marriage. In fact he appears to find sex with victims of violence to be "the best"....

The cultural issues that PiS is supposedly worried about are not in the convention so withdrawing from it is symbolic support of normalizing violence in the name of tradition.

Even if domestic violence rates are low in Poland, authoritarian governments like to do what they can to normalize violence at all levels of society so that people accept violent government oppression as just the way things work, Putin and Erdogan (who also resist anything trying to limit domestic violence) are good examples.

Also the ones he was dealing with were not creme de la creme.... they were long-term unemployed in a training course to try to improve their chances of getting a job.... he said about a third were okay and he could see them succeeding another third.. maybe and the last third was just hopeless, not stupid as such but uninterested in taking any kind of control of their life and uninterested in anything more than two meters away...

And to be fair I've known some East Germans who were perfectly fine people... but I can imagine the dregs there are pretty bad....

I've heard that Germans from the former DDR are a lot less friendly and outgoing than those from West Germany... I had a non-Polish friend who had a gig teaching in Frankfurt/Oder and while he really liked a lot about Germany he couldn't stand most East Germans... (he used the term "Scheiß fickende" a lot when talking about them....

It's a standard set of moves in the political playbook

1-Claim that "foreign" (or Jewish or socialist or church) influence in media is too strong and is hurting the nation

2-Force sales to "patriotic" publishers (ie party cronies)

3-Scrutiny of government actions and criticism of government disappears from media

4-Let the plundering begin/continue unimpeded by prying eyes....

If step number 1 doesn't set off alarm bells then you have no idea how politics works in the real world and nothing you say can possibly be of any value.

Which is kind of true.... a consistent problem with PO was that they couldn't even pretend to care about the working or rural classes... while PiS is good at PRL style 'send a minor dignitary to make 'em think we care' style gestures.

It depends on whether PiS can avoid early elections. There are a lot of signs that it's splintering (it's largely made up of factions that hate each other).

If JK becomes to weak to enforce discipline then all bets are off....

Conservatives are always trying to reshape their country according to a fantasy schema that never really existed*, Progressives are always trying to pave the way for a future that can never exist.

I'm a realist, a country has to deal with the past it actually has (as the past and not something to endlessly obsess over and try to correct) and has to deal with the present as it actually is (and not some fantasy about what it might have been had the past been different) in order to prepare for a future that's possible.

*The first PiS government was trying to recreate a fantasy version of the interwar republic (as they imagined it might have been). The current PiS government is more about recreating the PRL with nationalist and religious slogans instead of communism. Both are dead ends.

Progressives are equally misguided but have no power in the current set up...

No, I'm not. I'm American (ancestry mostly German with some Irish, Greek, maybe American Indian, maybe some other stuff). But, I've chosen to live in Poland for a very significant chunk of my life and I don't regret it. And I'm not trying to turn the country into some past fantasy...

No country can really stand alone in the modern world, it's only a question of who your allies are. And I'm afraid Konfederacja idiots think Russia would be a good ally (based on their similar authoritarian leanings).

In terms of Mosbacher, her spirited defense of a free press is in direct conflict with the PiS desire to criminalize criticism (or scrutiny). Again, straight from the PRL playbook.
