Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

Got my tests 9 or 10 months ago

I don't need to do the tests as I have my family tree going back over 200 years.........all Polish....but before that?
Who knows?
That is why I say we are all mongrels....... :-)

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

Maybe we should widen this discussion.....we could argue that there is a Slavic look, some Ukrainians and Russians do share some similarites to Poles. From my experience, especially women.....don't know why especially women....just an observance.

I would agree that there is not a general "Polish look",but I can tell some Poles from 100 metres away.
I remember an incident when I was about 10 years old and sitting next to my Dad,who was driving the car.
After staring at a family that I instinctively knew were Polish,I turned and saw my Dad smiling and looking at me.
He asked me why I was staring at that family....he knew.....and asked me if it was because I thought they might be Polish.

I was shocked......it was as if he had read my mind......I answered that, yes, that was why I was staring at them.
He just said,"You are right, they are"......and carried on driving.....

History / Why could some Czechs dislike Poles/Poland? [46]

When I hear Czechs speaking, it reminds me a little of Polish

When I hear Czechs speaking I understand very little and some of their words sound the same as Polish words but have a different meaning.

When I listen to Slowaks speaking it is like an Englishman trying to understand a very strong Glaswegian accent,if I concentrate hard I can get most of it.

Absolute rubbish.
Slowak is much closer to Polish than the frankly weird sounding Czech.
I thought you were some kind of linguist?
Obviously not.......

Food / Polish Christmas Eve Dinner recipes [84]

Suya is an awesome and popular dish among Poles of colour

Poles of colour?
What colour may they be then?
Oh yeah,your colour.
The more I think about your handle and the more I read your posts I get a real Australian feel from them....a black Australian feel...

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [534]

I remember Olisadebe now.....that was a joke how the Polish FA got him in.Not a bad player though, but not good enough to save a dreadful Polish team. And I don't think he was ever fully accepted as Polish by Polish fans, despite his Polish wife and Polish passport.

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

Swearing is a skill

Agreed.

But when over used it loses it's power.

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

Every time I am next to two Polish guys talking, all I hear is kurwa this and kurwa that.

In my part of London the population is mainly English,Polish,Irish and Indian.
They all swear like troopers and we all know the swear words in the different languages.
But Poles and Irish are probably the worst, just.

Genealogy / Polish Romani (gypsy) surnames [64]

If your last name is Cygan then your ancestors were either Gypsies or the people around your ancestors at the time either thought they were or behaved like Gypsies.

Cygan,or variations of it means Gypsy in many languages.
