Get a map. And look at it. You'll find that Scots are Brits too.

I must admit, there's stupid, and then there's Polonia stupid.

Not only you dislike our Polonia, you think they are exceptionaly stupid. Bravo.

The American Polonia ("Polacks") are exceptionally stupid, yes. It's like they've taken the worst of Polish stupidity and incorporated it into American stupidity - yielding a particular blend of stupidity that only American Polacks could have.

Just throwing this one out there....any thoughts? Anyone offended? Hungry?

Yes :( Why the hell doesn't Europe do that kind of food well? :(

Haven't you heard about the subtleties of bigos? Every time you warm it up, it tastes more and more of rotten, smelly old socks ;)

Life / My experience in Poland 15 years ago as an American trying to live and work there. [167]

You may place "reality" in quotes all you wish, as if to cast doubt that the stories are true. It is all true, but, honestly, I don't care if you, or others, believe it or not.

In all honesty, the work looks like the rantings of someone delusional on acid or similar.

Not bad as an attempt to produce something with the atmosphere of "fear and loathing" or similar - but please, don't insult our intelligence by pretending that it's real.

News / Polish Lithuanian Diplomatic War? At last. [534]

Certainly. First thing I found was this -

Publications "Polish Gazeta " and "Nasz Dziennik " that the officer BOR Jacek Pig , who was killed in the crash near Smolensk , he had to call his wife after the plane crash , had violated a basic principle of honest journalism , ie the principle of truth - assessed the Media Ethics Council .

Liars.

Yes, but my favourite involves plain chicken :)

I can't comment for American food, but British meat tends to be of a very low quality from most suppliers unless it's a "premium" product. I can see how they might complain - they probably also can't cook very well and are used to being fed by Babcia ;)

Are these Poles correct or are they just complaining?

As far as I'm concerned, the quality of meat far surpasses all but premium, "farmers" meat in the UK. Can't comment for elsewhere, but the quality of chicken is definitely on another level.

If they were eating cheap food (as they undoubtably were), then yes, the quality was probably less.

Pawian, Torq, step back and realize that Harry and Dolph have sent you on a goose chase digging up a quote you haven't even quoted. Even demanded Lithuanian school rules from you. lol.

No, Jola, we want the rules from you. Torq and pawian have given us what's publicly available, and linked us to sources which are credible. They admit happily that they don't have any evidence of it - nor are they claiming that such rules exist. YOU on the other hand brought up the "ban on Polish speaking" - and still haven't provided us with a credible source.

and took the opportunity to repeatedly smear Gazeta Polska, as if they have ever read it.

The newspaper was convicted in a Polish court of lying. Say no more. Torq and pawian can provide credible sources about this - why can't you?

Or are you admitting that you think that convicted liars are a good source of information?

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

A great nation I may add.

Certainly so - the achievements of the United States of America should not be downplayed in anyway. One of the greatest things about America is that you're not afraid to admit when you've been bad in history - it's obvious from American sources that you're deeply ashamed of the treatment of native Americans for instance.

I could talk for hours about American history and how endlessly interesting it is.

What do you mean by Polish Americans should have a decent critical viewpoint???

I'd hope that they would be able to read history sources from different places and come to a balanced conclusion, rather than simply repeating whatever nonsense they read in Gazeta Polska.

What do you mean by Polish Americans "have quite the opposite"??

I mean that most of them are completely unable to make up their own minds, instead relying on what hateful, xenophobic newspapers tell them.

Read the words of Mazurek, there is a story... i.e."Póki my żyjemy" etc.

Oh yes, that was where I started really. Discovering why Poland mentioned Napoleon by name in their anthem was a great starting point :)

Yup, that's what I think might have happened as well. I'm still waiting for some sort of credible published source about it (the Tygodnik Powszechny source is good, doesn't mention this alleged ban though) - but I think I'll be a long time in waiting.

If there were actual rules published about this, I dare say it would be all over the Polish media by now.

America has a hell of a lot to be proud of, and when people say "America has no history" - they're being rude at best. American history is very, very interesting - how can people deny history to America when it's much older than many other European states?

Even Germany was only created in 1870!

"Tygodnik Powszechny" is the last newspaper in Poland that can be described as PiS supporters :)

You know, that newspaper seems to be what I've actually been looking for - something middle of the road that doesn't resort to sensationalism.

What has Tusk got to do with the fact that Gazeta Polska are convicted liars?

Anyway, the average PiS voter fully supports bashing Lithuania.

The point is that it does not matter what you will be presented with - you think Poles deserve it. I don't have time for that nonsense. I'll stop here because the rest would be all insults.

All we're asking for is the copy of the actual school rules. It's not that difficult to produce, surely?

Or is this just another myth posted by convicted liars at Gazeta Polska?

When you finally dig up the important and disturbing facts that Polish children are not allowed to chat in Polish between classes, the sign issue will seem minor and your thread will give a better picture of the problem.

Prove it. And I want to see the actual rules, not nonsense reported in nationalist, xenophobic newspapers which have been convicted of lying like Gazeta Polska. Heck, if you can provide something reported in Gazeta Wyborcza or Rzeczpospolita, it'll be a start.

Or is this just another case of believing everything you read?

there will still be the problem that Poland did precisely the same to her minorities back when the shoe was on the other foot. What goes around does eventually come around and it's hard to have sympathy for those who complain when others do to them exactly what they used to do to others.

Yup. The Ukrainian case is rather well documented. It would seem that Poles don't like their own medicine.

When Poland abides by all EU laws, then Poland can complain about other nations not abiding by EU law.

Sounds fair to me. Or is it a case of the old double standards? Let's not forget that Poland refuses to supply information in all the community languages, despite there being an obligation to do so.

Cultural identity is very interesting, especially how it changes.

The really, really fascinating one for me at the moment is with the Northern Irish Protestants - they identify as being British, but so many Brits are now identifying themselves as Scottish/Welsh/English - so what's going to happen with them if the UK splits up? They don't really identify themselves as being from any one particular place.

This thread is wandering from the opening post.

they werent rich, they managed, but they graded the kids on appearance.. how screwed up was it back then?

Jesus, talk about discrimination :(

so I am sure it had to do with how he was treated, and my mom, people fit in if your not different.

Thanks - that was a really interesting insight, I appreciate you taking the time to post it :)

Paying taxes in Poland makes you less Scottish?

Can I use the cop-out that taxes paid in Scotland are given to the English oppressor?

Do you speak Scottish Gaelic?

Nope, there's no history of speaking it in my area. The North-East of Scotland never traditionally spoke it - we spoke Pictish, then moved to Scots - there was never any Gaelic dominance there.

What I mean though, is that often, the native culture of a country often influences the language. I found an absolutely fantastic essay a while ago online about how Irish influenced the English language there - I wish I could find it again :(

But they were brought up 100% Polish.

But were they? Pledging allegiance to a foreign flag every morning doesn't strike me as being 100% Polish, for instance. And not speaking the language fluently - well, they always say that you need to know the language to understand the culture.

(heck, from what I gather, you need to know Irish to understand Hiberno-English!)

Anyway, the whole something-American thing is just snobbery, nothing more.

As you know it is upbringing not some fantasy bloodline.

Bingo. Yet many of them claim that they're 100% POLISH - which is utter nonsense when you look at how ridiculously messed up Polish history is.

I hope you are not suggesting that bloodlines define people.

Not me, but the American Polonia is rather fond of saying how much Polish blood they have. The line "100% POLISH BLOOD" seems to be quite common among the more ignorant ones.

Because they said they were Polish and told their families that they were Polish.

Doesn't mean a thing - they might have been half Polish, half Lemko.

Who cares if you call them Polacks?

People like MediaWatch get very upset when you use the term Polack. It's highly amusing.

But why is it such a big deal to you?

I'm sick to death of the way that the American Polonia treat Poles. It's patronising, condescending and insulting in general.
