News / Coal-Powered Poland Refuses to "Go Green". EU Ain't Happy. [304]

thankfully my house is plenty warm with central heating

Same here.
JR has a point though, it does get very cold out in the sticks where he is, but I suspect it in not that much warmer where Rich, Dirk and Joker live.

So guys, tell us what your heating bill is in January.
I am very lucky, my house is EXTREMELY well insulated, three of the bedrooms are not used so the radiators are off, the heating is switched off at night and this winter London has, so far not gone below zero.

But I still think JR is using a very dumb and expensive way to heat his home.

Language / What is your biggest problem with Polish language? [158]

@Ziemowit

I completely agree on all your points, especially about English.
Some people say Italian is the sexiest European language, but I agree with you, French is more melodic to my ears.

Damn right. I don't have so why should I?

But this is my point Rich, you made the effort to learn English because you felt you had to.
So much so that you now reject your mother tongue..... there are not many Brits or Yanks that would do that the other way round with, say, French or German.

Therefore, many on the whole speak a foreign language better than their foreign interlocutor knows English

That is not my experience I'm afraid.
In general, Brits and Yanks are terrible at learning foreign languages, because most of them don't feel the need to.
Continental Europeans are much better at learning foreign languages than "Anglo Saxons" because they feel that they need to.

These kids just want to argue to argue

As Lenka told you.
Chill out old man, we are not arguing, just discussing.....calm down, a man of your age and weight does not need stress...
You told us how it is in your America and I told you how it is in my Britain.... that is all... no need to get angry or excited....

No argument.
So chill old man!
It's all cool..... hey, especially where you live....

@Lyzko A Polish speaker speaking English, is still thinking in Polish with English coming out.

This is it with languages.
You have to be able to think in the language you are speaking in to speak it properly.
I only speak three languages fluently, English, Polish and French.
And I can remember several occasiions when I have returned to England after a long stay in France or Poland and first spoke in English after a long absence and it all came out wrong..... it even sounded weird to my own ears..... because I was still thinking in French or Polish....

You must live in a very small house with low ceilings.

Firstly I have gas central heating, not electric and my house is four bedrooms, detached and 1930's build, so not particularly small but with large rooms and fairly high ceilings.

American houses tend to be bigger than European ones, so I guess mine would be the size of an average American house but large by European standards.

If I heated my house electricaly the cost would be more than double.

I meant 1500zl a month for both of them in the coldest month of winter when they run non-stop

That is bloody expensive.
1,500zl is about £300.
I heat my house with gas central heating for about £65 a month and the heating is on all day.

News / Polexit? Almost half of the Poles believe that Poland would be better off outside of the EU [548]

The long term political goals of Poland are not the same as those held by the EU core

You are a clever chap Spike :-)

Europe is in trouble.
But have you seen the IMF predictions for UK growth compared to Europe?
People are putting their faith in the UK because it is strong and stable.... Unlike much of Europe.
Brexit will be at the very least, good for the UK and it may even be great.....

infrared heaters

Very economical

Those two quotes do not go together.
Infared heaters can heat a room very quickly but are not particularly economical, nor are any electrical heaters.
Here in the UK we mainly use gas fired central heating.
Water heated by gas and pumped through pipes to radiators.
Works great and is fairly inexpensive.

The same scientists that admitted they forged documents and lied about global warming.

Exactly.
Lenka, Poland is years behind and it will take them a long time to drive pollution down.
But as for the "Global Warming " lie..... if it is true, we need to be talking to China and India...... Poland is not tbe global problem.

Life / Are Poles flashy? [11]

@Joker

The "Polish Squat" is mainly used for when they do not want to be seen smoking, but it is used for hiding drinking too.
People say this grew in Communist times.
But that is not true.
My dad squatted and he did not smoke and rarely drank.
And it is not just a Polish thing either, Lithuanians, Latvians,Czechs,Slowaks, and Ukranians do it too....

but I would rather believe scientists

You need to be more cynical.
Check out what the interests of those scientists are and what they may gain then check out that the scientists against the human global warming theories have nothing to gain.

Seriously, more and more people are feeling more threatened by the man made global warming

Nah, more and more youngsters who are being brainwashed by their teachers, TV and the internet are..... this, as one British newspaper reported this week is nothing short of child abuse.

Sure, pollution is a real problem.
Man made global warming is a man made illusion.....

News / Polexit? Almost half of the Poles believe that Poland would be better off outside of the EU [548]

it opened the eyes for many Poles about the true intentions and goals of the "EU core"

You are spot on in your analysis mate!

Will be tough to convince people that those outweigh making a richer, safer, healthier, and having more opportunities

I don't think so.
People in favour of the EU give far too much weight to economic "benefits" and "opportunities", there is a huge world outside of the restricted, stagnant EU.

Poland is not ready to leave the EU just yet but when the success of the UK post Brexit is seen, it will embolden them to consider leaving too...... and then the whole deck of cards that this false union has been created upon will start to collapse.

This is the beginning of the end of the EU..... a failed project because people pushed too hard....

@TheOther
Yeah, but remainers said it would happen before we left.It didn't...

, this will be the first in a long line of bailouts

You are just one in a long line of remainers that continue to believe the worst will happen..... so far you have been wrong every time.....

See you in 5 years when the UK is hunky dory and Europe is struggling.....

..it will be just a tad harder now....

Nah, it will be easier without EU constraints.

You lot are just $hitting yourselves.... because you know that The UK will be fine......

UK, Ireland / Moving from Ireland to Poland [39]

most Poles who go to Ireland are motivated almost entirely by money

And you can add England, Scotland and Wales,....
There is an old saying, and I think there is some truth in it.
"Poles know the cost of everything and tbe value of nothing"..
This is not true of most Poles, but many are guilty of this.

they will be leaving in droves or going bankrupt

Pro EU supporters told us this would start happening soon after we voted to leave.
Over 3 years later it still hasn't happened.
Flybe's problems have nothing to do with Brexit and Sterling is doing fine thanks.

News / Polexit? Almost half of the Poles believe that Poland would be better off outside of the EU [548]

your interpretation is incorrect - they said it could do better outside the EU.

That is the same thing.............and Britain won't make a pigs ear of it because whatever arrangement we do or don't make with the EU will make very little difference either way.

The important thing is not the deal or no deal we get from the EU but what Britain does in the years to come.
The most important thing is that it will be down to Britain to succeed or fail.
