Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Actually, a lot of Jewish Poles and Polesses are considered very Polish.

E.g, this year, the advanced final Polish exam for high schools included the topic of Cinnamon Shops by Bruno Schulz, Polish Jewish writer who perished in the ghetto in 1942.

Topic 2.
How is space created in literary works and what is the function of such creation in a given work?
At work, refer to:
· a selected short story from the volume Cinnamon Shops by Bruno Schulz
· other literary works from two different eras
· selected context.

Did I mention that from this September ALL Ukrainian kids will have to attend Polish schools?

Currently there is chaos and nobody knows anything for sure.

Teachers are sceptical about the idea.

I think that this solution will generate new difficulties. There are already a lot of Ukrainian children in schools, especially in Łódź. But they have been here for two years, they have passed the preparatory stage in terms of learning the language and adapting the requirements. Schools have implemented procedures, students have adapted and the teaching is functioning somehow, says Agnieszka Michałowska.

She adds: - Now, more children are to be admitted to the system. We don't know what stage of education they are at, what about their knowledge of the language. It is not known whether they will be automatically admitted to classes where other Ukrainians study today, or to preparatory classes. It should be emphasized that these are children whose families were not interested in Polish schools for two years, and now they are forced to do so. We have very serious concerns about how they will cope

The deputy head of the Polish Teachers' Union in the Łódź region emphasizes that motivation may be crucial in the case of new students. Experience shows that children from families who associate their future with Poland usually do better, they come to lessons willingly, they have a goal, they know why they are learning. The situation is different in the case of those families who are in limbo and do not know whether they will return to Ukraine after the war or seek their happiness elsewhere.

History / Poles and (Polish) Jews... Victims of war... and beyond [380]

hey will never be considered Polish.

Actually, a lot of Jewish Poles and Polesses are considered very Polish. Read about it here: Schools and streets are named after them. Students at all 3 tiers of education study their works.

I have read too many history reports on how Poles robbed

The Home Army's aka Polish underground "Information Bulletin" described the situation in Otwock, Rembertów and Miedzeszyn in the summer of 1942:

On the memorable day of the liquidation of the Otwock ghetto, a few hours after this barbaric event, [the population] immediately descended at night in horse-drawn carriages and began to plunder the remaining Jewish property. They took everything they could lay their hands on , broke doors and windows, shelves, floorboards, not to mention furniture, clothes and underwear, which were the first to fall victim to the robbery.

Really.

Nope. I have read too many history reports on how Poles robbed Jewish property and belongings during and after the war.

E.g,
ciekawostkihistoryczne.pl/2012/05/18/niemcy-mordowali-zydow-a-polacy-rabowali-wszystko-co-po-nich-zostalo/

In his latest book, Dr. Marcin Zaremba, a historian from the University of Warsaw, discovers a shameful and for years trivialized chapter of Poland's occupation history. What did ordinary Poles do when the Germans ruthlessly deported Jews to slaughter? Of course, some tried to help their neighbors of a different faith. They even risked their own lives. However, there were many more who saw the Holocaust as an excellent opportunity to enrich themselves. There is no doubt that the plundering of Jewish property had a nationwide scope, it passed like a wave through the territories of the General Government, and also took place in eastern Lesser Poland- emphasizes Zaremba in "Wielka trwoda". Examples can be multiplied.

Which never happened.

Really? Who lives in thousands houses which once belonged to Jews? Who exploits ex Jewish synagogues as community centers or libraries?

My family and many others (Polish families!) lost properties

Of course. They lost property which was destroyed during the war.
Most Jewish property all over Poland survived and was taken over by Poles and Polesses after the war.

while comfortably benefiting from the very land taken from them.

Like Polish people who took over Jewish land and property in hundreds of towns and cities where Jews used to live and have been benefiting from the gain since Holocaust.

a masterclass in hypocrisy.

Exactly!

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

strawberry patches

This year strawberries grew abundantly, like all fruit. However, I wasn`t satisfied with the Honeydew variety coz it wasn`t sweet enough despite a lot of sunny weather and hot temps. Probably it is the problem of soil which doesn`t suit Honeydew. I am going to get rid of this variety and return to the overbearing one I grew a few years ago. It was always sweet.

I always get a heartache when I have to kill those little creatures which feed on our crops. Each season I terminate hundreds of thousands if we count in eggs, too. Poor bugs. But I have no choice - it is either them or my food.
Couples making love are not aware of the fate that awaits them.

Agrofabric is extensively used on our farm.

Photos show potato and strawberry patches covered with fabric this year. It brings amasing results. Next year I am going to use it on other veg like tomatoes or celery.

News / Famous Poles die - your memories [112]

he was my role model had a few accidents one with fatal injuries but he always returned to racing.

He survived many serious accidents and came close to death several times, including in April 1982, during a competition near Berlin on Lake Gatow, he even experienced clinical death.

His boat shot into the air, crashed, and he fell out of it mid-flight. He hit the water. His life was saved by his rival, Helmut Faustmann. The German stopped his boat and jumped into the water.

- The wind was blowing hard then. I was at the front of the pack and at one point the boat with me shot up and then crashed into the lake. I lost consciousness. I was floating face down in the water - he recalled in an interview with TVP Sport.

He fell into clinical death, resuscitation lasted 25 minutes. The Marshal also had a lung pierced by ribs, a severed tendon in his leg, a shattered hip, a broken femur, a skull injury, a damaged optic nerve, a torn heel...

- I was operated on the spot, on the shore. After three or four days I regained consciousness, and I was in hospital for five weeks - he said on Polish Radio.

In the autumn of the same year he won the competition in Berlin. The following season he won another world championship title. In one of his interviews he said that the accident only made him give up cigarettes.

Travel / Hiking around Zakopane/ Tatra mountains [33]

Tourists from Arab countries siege Zakopane. They love the nature and weather.

The highlanders are particularly interested in the fact that tourists from the Middle East are very happy about the weather. - When Polish tourists run to restaurants and taverns during a downpour, they walk in the middle of the street and are happy that it is raining. This is an attraction and a blessing - emphasizes Agata Wojtowicz.

It is the nature and wildlife surrounding the capital of the Polish Tatras that are supposed to be the key to understanding the popularity of this destination. - For them, the greatest value is what we treat as commonplace: lawns, trees, proximity to parks . Last season, I met a group of young Arab women who took a picture of themselves at every flower bed - the head of TIG recalls in an interview with Interia. - They tell us themselves that the smell of our air is different , and greenery is within reach - she adds.

History / Poles and (Polish) Jews... Victims of war... and beyond [380]

A Polish Jewess, Ada Willenberg, 95, an Israeli citizen who survived Shoah, says she recalls ghetto atrocities when she sees the genocide on Palestinians in Gaza.

She escaped from the ghetto and fought in the Warsaw Rising. "I can't stand to watch what's happening in Israel"
When I look at what is happening in the Gaza Strip, it is like we were in the ghetto. When I see how they drag their belongings, everything they have, I remember when we entered the ghetto - says 95-year-old Ada Krysia Willenberg in an interview with Onet.

Yes, there are still a lot of decent Israelis who reject their Nazi gov` policy towards Arabs.

Food / Traditional Polish Soups. [85]

But zurek isn`t thick. Yes, it contains a lot of calories due to egg and Polish sausage content but most of it is very watery. While the soups I make are so thick the spoon stands vertically in them.

The side dish is boiled pork ribs.

I forgot to add that after boiling those ribs I used the broth to make the soup. But I suppose it is obvious to most of our readers.

Najjar. Very unusual surname to me.

The end of the interregnum in the District Court in Warsaw. Minister Bodnar appointed a new president
Onet's earlier information has been confirmed that the Warsaw District Court will have a new president on Tuesday. Judge Beata Najjar will head the court, as reported by Adam Bodnar.

History / Time for Slavic Commonwealth around Poland as center [223]

We are not "negative" enough

I didn`t mean all Germans. I meant YOU particularly. You were born in East Germany which also accepted many exotic gastarbeiters or students. I still remember that black student who stayed in our house on school exchange in early 1980s coz my elder sister attended an advanced German language class in high school.
So, you should like the presence of migrants in your country. But strangely enough, your attitude is negative.

Well....nobody forces them to live here

Yes, you force them in many ways. The first act of using pressure on migrants to stay in Germany was enacted in 1964.
After 1961 Turkish citizens soon became the largest group of guest workers in West Germany. The migrants, were allowed to work in Germany for a period of one or two years before returning to their home country. Some migrants did return, after having built up savings for their return. The recruitment treaty was changed in 1964 so that the Turkish guest workers could stay longer.

Be consistent with your noble ancestors` decrees and don`t complain. Change your negative attitude coz it is really wrong.

In Germany we have the same problems with young men of islamic background

What problems??? Are you nuts??? The first Islamic gastarbeiters appeared in West Germany in 1960s. Count how many years have passed since then. Germans should have adapted to them long ago. If you didn`t, it is your own fault. Why aren`t you consistent like stereotypical Germans used to be???
So, we can say that Islamic immigrants have a problem with you, Germans, coz you have changed your national character. For worse. Ha!!!

History / How different would WW2 turned out if Poland accepted Hitler's offer [219]

In 1944 Germans tried to encourage Polish men in occupied part of Poland to join the auxiliary units supporting the German army. They hoped that 150 thousand Poles would volunteer.

A very good article on the subject

onet.pl/informacje/wielka-historia2/175-tys-polakow-u-boku-wehrmachtu-taki-plan-mieli-niemcy-w-1944-r/ph69k4w,30bc1058

(...) the appeals addressed to Poles brought no response in Krakow, its surroundings, or in the entire General Government. By November 25, 321 "volunteers" had been recruited, and by the end of the year - 471.

The Germans not only did not accept this state of affairs, but also... denied the facts. In their opinion, as many as 9,000 volunteers showed up at the recruitment points! On paper, the recruitment rate actually looked good. How is that possible? The answer is surprisingly simple. Registration of candidates began with the number five thousand. In addition, some of the "volunteers" were probably prisoners released in exchange for joining a collaborationist formation.

History / Crazy 1990s in Poland - transition from communism to capitalism - stories [111]

In communist Poland there was only one TV game show called Great Game. Everybody watched it coz there was no other. It required immense knowledge on expertise level.
In 1990s new programmes appeared. Instead of intellectual Great Game, simpletons could watch less demanding game shows. One of them was Wheel of Fortune. It was so popular that I even played this game with my students in class.

Wojciech Pijanowski hosted it for many years.
