Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [89]

Tonight is Halloween (Celtic festival), tomorrow All Saints day, both must be pre-Christian but all saints was adapted for ease of conversion, are they linked to each other in any way?

from the web:

Halloween actually began with the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in the British Isles. November 1 was a day of honoring the dead and celebrating the New Year. Christians combined the ancient practices and came up with All Saints Day, a Sacred Christian holiday meant to honor the Saints of the church who died, especially those who have been martyred for their faith. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Even or “holy evening,” later shortened to Halloween. In others words, Halloween is a unique blend of pagan and Christian rituals all designed to help us remember those who have died.

USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

Actually, what annoys me most is the way that they have such a poor grasp of history - they seem to believe that Poland always existed and that there's no way that Busha and Jaja could be from Russia - even when they were born in Russia.

i share this problem. most of my ancestors are border folk. and as great-gran used to say ''not english, not scottish. borders'' the family names include carruthers, elliot, wilson, and belong to scotland. the land they would reive and settle, england.

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

Has there recently been a resurgence of "searching for origins" in the states?

with new resourses and updated sites like Family Search ''searching for origins'' is bigger than ever. there must be millions of people in the USA looking for their European roots.

Life / The Polish Dream - move out from Poland as fast as possible [73]

if the PL government imposed a fine on all university grads that left PL within 5 years of graduating.

that might work, if they (students) paid for their place at university and are then given the money back if they stay after graduating.

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [89]

Every year the media does a body count after the weekend how insane is that!!

it's worse than that. they do a body count at the start and update it when necessary. nothing like keeping informed.

from: thenews.pl

''As families travel to cemeteries for All Saints weekend, 24 have died with 291 injured in 234 accidents on the roads in Poland''.

Do they arrange for someone else to put candles on their relatives graves in Poland?

if family (in Poland) can't get across country they visit a local cemetery and place candles and flowers at the cross, which serves a number of purposes including a place to lay wreaths for those buried elswhere or those lost with no grave (victims of war etc)

sometimes people will place a candle on an untended grave.

some folk contact other family members and come to some sort of arrangement.

some simply go another day.

Life / The Polish Dream - move out from Poland as fast as possible [73]

it does not create opportunities for young people...

yet we learn in another thread that there are to be handouts for those youngish people returning from foreign parts.

there are talks taking place at EU headquarters to raise the minimum wage, but Poland can't afford it. the minimum should be 30% of the average, if i remember correctly. i'm sure someone will put me right.

if the pay is crap and choice of jobs is limited.... then move.

One week ago i was speaking to my friends little brother what he wanted to do after he finished school.

i'm sure that he'd have a better idea, if he had careers lessons at school and the government worked with business to show what opportunities are available.

Genealogy / Adopted from Poland; trying to find my biological parents [99]

register with this forum.... make some posts.... send me a PM with your family name and i'll check nasza klasa for u.

or just post your family name here and see what happens.

a problem with Polish names is that if u don't use correct spelling / Polish alphabet in some search engines u end up with nothing.

USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

But I think this kind of thing happens with all nations and their diaspora from time to time all over the world.

true enough.

some people might seem to be over keen to celebrate their roots and go a little overboard.

this might then embarrass a few traditionalists back at home. the rest just see people having a good time.

and its true Poles in Poland appreciate anyone who appreciates their culture

not all. there was a news item about a week ago about how the mountain folk here are not happy with folk in the usa.

it was about wearing the wrong traditional costume etc.

Love / Why do so many Polish girls dye their hair BLACK? [124]

I realize that most of the Polish girls are dying their hair to black

i wouldn't say most.

there are those that follow one fashion or another. some go for black hair. they are usually the ones with skinny jeans/ treggings, boots and painted nails with stars and such like.

those with black hair wear it long. those with red hair wear it short.

Or are you referring maybe to the slobbier side of British/Irish closed curtain wasterism?

i refer to those in this house who know it will be a while before the next jar

salad cream goes down well, and quickly, too.

the Poles I know love salad cream and Branston pickle for example.

Yes, but someone should point out that sitting in front of the tv with a tablespoon and jar of branston is not the way to do it.

Food / Best hypermarket to shop for foods in Poland? [21]

Real - good candy selection, can be overpriced

Real can be overpriced, but sometimes has very good offers. Heinz beans were about 3zl a can a few weeks ago.

Biedronka - good deal on shrimp, only has candy and moldy fruit, overpriced same as Lidl

biedronka is dirt cheap. i managed a meal for seven today for less than 20zl.
