UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [286]

I doubt the Polish prosecutor's office would get involved.

They have to if a case is brought to them.

Besides, I don't know if the mother knew about all those procedures. She came from Poland when she found out about her daughter's death, she didn't live in the UK.

She would certainly be supported by Polish speaking police staff. London does not lack Poles, including people who have moved there and are serving as police officers. She would also be entitled to support from the Polish Consulate.

Why didn't they say what was the cause of her death?

The police don't. The Coroner does, and it is a matter of public record. Coroner's verdicts canot be concealed. And of course all Death Certificates contain the cause of death.

Why the flatmates weren't questioned?

Do you think they weren't?

Food / Polish cakes made in Poland [115]

lemon puffs

I was actually going to say those as favourite however sadly I never see them in the shops and haven't for a long time. As a kid, I loved them. Especially the light and shiny biscuit part.

At home, it was mostly Rich Tea or 'Nice" which I never much liked. Sometimes ginger biscuits which I did.

I've never seen Royal Scot though Kerry Creams sound very much like one on sale in the Middle East which is nice. They also have Lime Wafers here which are pretty good!

If that's a non-story for you then you're one messed up individual.

Tough.

Any unexplained or sudden death in the UK triggers three things. Firstly, an investigation by the CID. Secondly a post mortem by a forensic pathologist. Thirdly an inquest held at a Coroner's Court.

It is worth mentioning that the deceased person's family are routinely involved in all three stages. If for any reason they are unhappy with the police investigation they can flag it to the IPCC. If they are unhappy with the results of the post-mortem they can ask for a second one. If they are unhappy with the verdict of the court they can raise an appeal. All of these things are free and are taken seriously.

There's also the Police and Crime Commissioner for the region as well as the Victims' Commissioner; they can both become involved at the request of a family member of a deceased person and they take things very seriously.

I know how police anywhere can suck sometimes.

They certainly can, however the combined chance of police error, a forensic pathologist missing signs of a suspicious death and a Coroner's Court all getting it wrong are vanishingly small.

As I say, it's a non-story that is being pushed by a 'private detective'.

I had a feeling that your comment

I had a feeling you would. That's why you posted a non-story.

It doesn't look like they followed them at all.

How do you know? On the basis of something a grieving mother and her 'private detective' said?

To explain what happened?

To a camera crew? That's not how things work.

If there was the slightest possibility of a cover up, the media would be all over this. They love nothing more than suspicious deaths and ways to criticise the authorities. It isn't, and it's not even in the local news, however if you're concerned, feel free to contact the IPCC.

A shocking case of neglect by the London police?:

I doubt it. You probably mean the Metropolitan Police, and they (as well as the Coroner, a senior judge) have very strict protocols to follow.

The involvement of a "private detective hired by the mother" is a red flag here.

The London police officers didn't want to talk in front of the cameras.

Why the hell should they?

This just sounds like a grieving mother unable to accept her daugfhter's death.

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [346]

It seems the 'judge' who recently defected to Belarus had links to the PiS regime...

"In 2019, it emerged that a group of judges, including Szmydt, ran an online smear campaign against judges, prosecutors and others opposed to the then PiS government's policies. The group was allegedly coordinated by Łukasz Piebiak, a deputy justice minister.

The episode, which was dubbed the "hate affair" by the Polish media, allegedly involved using social media accounts - including one run by Szmydt's then-wife, Emilia (known online as "mała Emi", meaning "Little Emi") - to smear opponents."

Does that exist?

I think it's raspberry jam.

My second favourite biscuits, after garibaldis.

Travel / Kielce and the area - amazing Polish Pocket Knives live there [105]

milk bars but that's not quite the same thing.

There's the new generation of milk bars (a logical evolution) and there's also so ethical g else that you see in a few places. Sort of two-in-one or three-in-one places. One kitchen and a milk bar and one or two better places all adjacent. I used to live near one. The prices and appearance differed; milk bars have a subsidy and in Warsaw they usually accept food stamps, there was one with high tables, cheap set meals and beer next to it where people often just went for a drink, and there was a third with tablecloths and waitresses.

Restauracja Stylowa in Nowa Huta once.

There are a few nice ones there, good atmosphere and very traditional.

I've heard of them. There's none in my area though

Hopefully they'll open one. They really are good.

Colour means nothing, however I was struck by Irvine Welsh's description of Canadians as people who emigrated because they can't get on with their neighbours.

UK, Ireland / "Strange " English language.. [264]

a true English accent

What's a "true English accent"?

Ar there "u true" ones?

isn't really English at all, but
German!

It isn't. Prince Albert etc had no effect on accents. If anything, RP is based on a fusion of speech patterns slightly to the north of London with those to the south of it. It's rather hard to know how people could mimic one individual's foreign accent when few had heard him speak. Early recordings of elderly people speaking g RP and born not long after he was suggest that their speech wasn't remotely "mimicking" a German accent.

best go to Devon or better
still Dartmoor

Hard to know why you selected those places which are right down in one corner of the country. Ezra Pound used to affect a north east England accent something a bit like Teeside. I'd say that perhaps the "purest" is probably what you'd hear in rural parts of the East Midlands. That does not of course imply that any others are impure.

closed language clubs in British society

There are no "closed language clubs". There are however many mutually comprehensible dialects that make up English, and many subtle (and not unchanging) differences in accent. This is entirely normal for a language on its home territory being spoken where it has evolved and continues to evolve.

has been moving

And it sounds so jarring.

"I need some advices

That one too. And "trainings".

But how do you do that without any grammar in school?

Chomsky and Krashen have been discussing that one for decades.

grammar taught to native speakers in English needs to model itself more after what ESL students get

EFL learners? Yes, I agree. It would be a much better approach.

Hard to break down barriers with ignorance....

What 'ignorance'?

I'd say that acknowledging that grammar is descriptive rather than prescriptive is the opposite of that.

Trying to claim that "less people" is a grammar mistake is wrong.

It simply sounds coarse, a sort of shibboleth. Countability and headwords are a particular charcteristic of our language.

Yes.

The Polish entry was eliminated in the first semi-final due to being rubbish.

Apparently Switzerland is supposed to be a very good one and Slovenia sounds interesting.

Or breaking them down which was rather the point in 70s and 80s South Yorkshire.

Nevertheless, some things are an integral part of the language and others are jarring. Using "less" where "fewer" should be used is chief among them.

So what?

So it's still correct and used by millions.

No, in England (beginning I think in the 1700s

As far as I know it was a bigger thing on the western side of the ocean and persisted much longer, hence the prescriptive grammar there even today. At school, I didn't have even one lesson about grammar apart from apostrophes.

preferably as the devil

Dressing up as devils sounds fun and is certainly nothing new in entertainment. I heard the Irish song and there's nothing sinister about it. Great fun.

At least r*SSia's out of it and can't fiddle the voting.

The Australian entry looks fun.

Life / Polish songs with religious motifs [23]

of the RC religion

Of the Christian religion. Since they are taken from the Sermon on the Mount, they are common to all Christian denominations including RC.

And they are something that people (including a lot of churchgoers) would do well to remember.

Here's a fun quiz in today's newspaper. Three of the questions (the football club, the Oxford college and the street in Edinburgh) are trick questions and you re ally need to know them however the other ones are good.

A witch's ritual on stage

That sounds great fun.

He's also an actor

A quick look online says he was in a series called It's a Sin which was good.

a bit on the bland side. Something and nothing.

I thought so too. Hopefully they'll be a nice dance routine however I don't think he'll win or come anywhere near the top, especially die to block voting. A catchier tune would be better.

Marks and Spencer sell a kid of men's shoe that I call "pensioners' specials".They don't look stylish but are crazy comfortable and good for people who have to stand up all day.
