Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Especially the German ones!

But then I should have known that Poznań city government is too cheap to spend money on something like a lamplighter....

Good answer!

If no one else wants a crack at the lamp riddle. It's in Poznań on the Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) between the Warta and Cybina, more exactly on the new bridge built over the Cybina a few years ago. I've been there a number of times but never at the time of day to see the lamps lit (and had no idea they even do that.. live and learn).

News / The ruling party in Poland tries to take American owned TV news station off the air [528]

New theory: PiS bought all those tanks so that the US would turn a blind eye to removing an American owned media outlet that's often critical of the government....

Are they that dumb?

There are also reports that Gowin wants a change to the law (exempting the US from the forbidden list) or that perpetual losers Konfederacja is split and might vote for the bill.

Between this and the ambassador kerfuffle Poland is coming off as a really unreliable partner/ally (the US is a proven terrible ally so maybe the countries deserve each other?)

History / Did Poland bring on its own destruction in 1939? [71]

You mean it as a joke (I hope) but there's something to that. Atheism (at a societal level) reduces people to the animal level but without natural animal instincts that have been bred out of people for the last few thousand years. So they flounder and fail at things that animals find effortless.

To work, a human society needs some kind of transcendent goal that's outside of, yet dependent on, the individual. The only non-religious order that really delivers that (AFAICT) is Confucianism. It's not technically a religion but it's as close as the Chinese get - their theory of everything.

Of course being overly religious is just about as bad (in another direction).

East Germany became a religious black hole....and it still is!

Not a good thing. Societies without religion tend to withdraw into nihilism and can't accomplish basic necessary tasks such as reproduce - leading to the need to outsource reproduction to foreign imports...

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [503]

, any sparkling wine was called champagne. Any fish roe was called caviar

Also true in the US at least until sometime in the 1980s... (and in everyday usage probably still) so that's not necessarily a communist thing.

On the other hand, I never understood why chicken Kiev is called 'de volaille' in Poland (or the dish known everywhere else as Russian (or Olivier) salad 'jarzynowa'...

I recognize the place in the pic but I'll give others a chance.

the pink part of that ice cream is kind of "explosive" in a way lol

does it have baking soda inside it? There used to be a kind of candy in the US with baking soda inside.... nasty, nasty stuff...

Polonia / Which country is better SPAIN or POLAND [118]

which language do local people speak today in ex-Spanish Latin America?

Lots... in addition to official Spanish lots of indigenous languages and cultures are thriving (far more so than in NAmerica) there are also immigrant languages (preservation of which tends to vary from country to country, I remember my university in the US had a subscription to an Argentinian journal published in Ukrainian...) and new languages (creoles) not to mention sign languages (which probably number in the dozens).

The establishment of Spanish in the Americas though all levels of life is one of the most remarkable linguistic facts in recorded history - in many ways much more interesting than the spread of English since it was less tied to purely.... economic considerations and more deeply culturally based.

(In Africa the spread of Swahili over the last few hundred years is similarly remarkable).

fomments the Russian President Putin has made"

Standard sociopathic behavior known as 'blaming the victim' Putin's party line about Poland being responsible for WWII is meant to erase Soviet guilt with regard to Katyń, sabotage of the Warsaw uprising and military occupation of the country afterwards...

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

And how can they be kept in Lithuania or Poland with no border controls? So they're off to Germany (which has an established record of spectacular incompetence when it comes to deporting undesirables...)

immigrants have to be sent back

Not so easy... if they know to say 'asylum!' then border guards are legally obliged to let stay in until their case is reviewed (thanks, EU!)

started sending illegal immigrants across the Lithuanian border first

This is exactly what Erdogan started doing about 10-15 years ago, lifting visas to Turkey and sending people to the Greek border.... (I knew it was going to be a problem but no one wanted to think about it for years and years.....) It's no surprise that the human filth known as Lukashenka is doing the same thing....

News / Poland to get the newest version of M1A2 Abrams tank [90]

purpose of the military is to deal with external threats, not internal ones

But this proposed EU Army (last I knew) had no airforce which makes it useless for dealing with outside threats...

buses called cucumbers.

I thought those stopped being used in the 1980s or so... I'm pretty sure I've never been on one (and weren't they more for PKS than for use within cities?)

I assumed she was talking about the old accordion buses (wiki calls them 'articulated' and 'przegubowy' ) I remember the rubber at the joints sometimes seemed to crack and leak...

wasn`t Polish production. It must be German

Quite probable, they were buying second hand rolling stock well into the 1990s (or early 2000s?) the worst were Dutch which were awful in summer (originally intended to be air-conditioned it was usually/always turned off).

The EU army is definitely discussed as we speak!

The question is against who? My thought has always been the purpose of an EU army is to put down domestic unrest when national armies might be hesitant to use violence agains their fellow citizens... (see yellow vests in France)

just in time to see the last of a lot of things that had been part of everyday life

I remember in the early 90s there were still a few _really_ old style streetcars around with wooden slats on the floor (presumably to clean mud/snow/whatever from people's feet)

Here's a view (I don't remember the seats being made of wood but you see the slats on the floor)
