Such news articles don't exist on the Polish internet:

About 10 seconds searching and I found this: kremlin troll confirmed

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

a few early medieval European legends about land to the west

I have no doubt that various Europeans (and others) occasionally made it to the new world and then made it back to where they came from... vikings surely did, maybe some scattered celts, maybe some basques (at one point they had been to Iceland enough that a Basque/Icelandic pidgin appeared... dudes got around).

Welsh Prince went there and went native (is it the Mandan tribe?)

That was a Great Plains group, centered around modern North Dakota... a long way to go (and a lot of tribes to get through) to get there.

Does the name really come from America Vespucci

Amerigo --- Latinized to Americus then fem adjective america and the rest is, as they say.... history.

coming from Armorica?

That's a stretch...

not exactly your 'shores', though, is it....

Haiti and the Dominican Republic?

Yeah... Colombus never set foot on land that became the US (AFAIK)

On the other hand, America, like many words is polysemous (has more than one meaning). These come from the primary meanings in English and Spanish the two most spoken languages in the New World.

In NAmerican English it usually refers to the US (occasionally found in Spanish as well).

In Spanish, América normally refers to the entirely of the North and South American continents.... This can also found in English at times.

So Colombus discovered América (as in was the first European to open up the New World land mass for European settlement). Random Viking or Polynesian (or other Asian) or even Basque(?!) visits didn't result in anything lasting.

News / The most pro-Russian Polish politicians [14]

pro-Russian I meant the perception of their actions by the general society

Bosak was just speaking in the Sejm demanding all sorts of information be made public (has he never heard of 'state security'?) and russia would be delighted if the government were daft enough to do what he was asking for.....

mayb they are that stupid?

putin himself is a deeply stupid and shallow.... person.

invading Ukraine was the stupidest decision by the leader of a large country since.... when?

the only people who support(ed) it are either evil or stupid... .there is no other option.

A is a Sperg with no theory of mind and no real principles AFAICT. Like libertarians all he cares about are immediate physical/financial issues directly related to his own self and either can't or won't think in systemic terms.

B is the Polish equivalent of Derek Huffman, willing to support russia only to the extent that it hates some of the same people he does.

C is an aging clown with no constituency and so has nothing to offer moscow....

Was the Nord Stream pipelines sabotage by Ukrainians a 'false flag' or not?

I don't care. I'm just glad that monster was aborted.... the whole purpose was to assure Germany it would keep getting cheap hydrocarbons while russia invaded its neighbors (hoping that Germany would show as much conviction as it did in 2014 (none) and in the early days of the 2022 full invasion (less than none) and turn a blind eye.

Nord stream = never again

Supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia will inevitably lead to escalation and retaliation from Russia

Yes. And any other choice (supporting russia, claiming to be 'neutral') is worse.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [816]

Not noticing what's under your nose because of looking elsewhere/far away?

My understanding, after consulting with an educated native speaker (phd in a non-language related field) it has two meanings...

one - being in the light makes it harder to see what's around you (esp things that could be.... not good for you).

two - it's often easier to do bad things out in the open because people don't notice (similar to the old Agatha Christie trope about people being invisible when dressed in work outfits).

The problem with the AfD

The problem is that government no longer reflects the will of the people.

People elected CDU largely due to its promises to restrict/reverse current migration policies but other coalition partners have scuttled that at every turn.

the message being sent (no matter what politicians think they're doing) is that only an absolute majority of AfD has any chance of stopping flow and/or deporting those with no legal right to be in Germany.

I would love it if the German establishment woke up to this and decided to do what the electorate wants but that doesn't seem possible at present.

Life / Do colored immigrants in Poland function better than in Western countries? [295]

Meanwhile, in Germany.... doctors are getting lessons on how to counter knife attacks by white women by swinging a towel at them...

Who knew knife crime by white women was such a problem there?

And in England.... a child rapist is let go because he didn't know that raping children was illegal.... but Graham Linehan for sure knew that tweeting mean things about autogynephiles was illegal....

There are many more of us.

Bye bye plans for reduced police force.... it turns out that letting in hundreds of thousands of young men from chaotic societies who are unable to function in a western high function society

How common is this kind of thing now compared to before 2015...

Hard to know why he did it.

He's used to taking things from people would be the obvious explanation....

And he's so self-absorbed that he simply didn't think anyone would notice.

the only one (beside you) who still stubbornly insists it was the right thing to do, is Merkel herself!

Apparently she recently said she had no idea it would be so difficult to deport those refused asylum....

What a dreadful leader... in office about 7 years too long....

At this year's US Open Polish players are doing pretty well so far..... Polish fans.... less so.

After winning his match, Kamil Majchrzak offered his hat to a boy in the stands when an adult man snatched it from Majczrzak's hands.... as it turns out this 'adult' is most likely Piotr Szczerek, head of a company called Drogbruk

Then his supposed lawyer writes a press release designed to make everyone hate Szczerek...

x.com/wojtek1425/status/1961624324965572641

Majchrzak has publicly reached out to try to find the boy so he can give him a cap.

Awaiting further developments....

History / 81st Anniversary of Warsaw Uprising [72]

real communism didn't exist, or it existed

"Real" communism has never existed anywhere.... even the cccp never claimed to be communist. Communism could only be achieved after a transitory period of socialism.

The problem was that socialism sucks and destroys economies (despite what marx thought) and so the level of prosperity needed for communism could never come into being.

Off-Topic / Happy Independence Day, Ukraine! [21]

Unrelated question.... does anyone know off the top of their heads what kind of family/hereditary model is traditional in Ukraine?

I came across this video and now I'm wondering...

youtube.com/watch?v=-RFFwhbVqeU

russia followed the 'exogamous communitarian' model (more closely than any other) with patriarchs having absolute power over their adult sons and their wives... these societies tend toward totalitarianism being controlled by unaccountable absolute leaders (putin and xi being prime examples)

Poland followed the 'egalitarian nuclear' model with all sons inheriting equally (lots of tension between equality (redistributionist populists) and freedom (capitalistic technocrats) as seen in current Polish politics)

Germany followed the 'authoritarian' model with only oldest sons inheriting... (capable of rapid transformation and concerned with perpetuating the lineage and when under attack will never. give. up.).

Ukrainian response to the russian invasion suggests an authoritarian family model....

(nb of course no society perfectly matches one model as there will be regional differentiation and other factors that affect implementation).

History / 81st Anniversary of Warsaw Uprising [72]

Just like Polish communists after 1990.

Compared with some other countries (Czechoslovakia, DDR, Bulgaria, Romania) the PRL was pretty chill. It didn't feel like that to many Poles but lots of things went on that were unthinkable in those other countries...

the equivalent of Pewex were off limits to citizens in the other countries but Poles were encouraged to use them, there were attempts to maintain relations with the diaspora, the church functioned as a de facto opposition party, talk with people (or people who lived in the cccp) and the differences were very stark.

This leads to the paradox: The easier a time a country had during communism, the harder it will be to figure out who can/should be excised from public life.

In the DDR and Czechoslovakia it was easier to figure out who to prevent from holding office. In Poland... it wasn't so clear.

Also, in Poland (I don't know about other Eastern Bloc countries) there was a large gray area between members of the communist party and those with no connection... people with connections to the party but who didn't belong and a fair number of party members did so merely for work-related purposes...

It's a tough question that will only be resolved by time.... (society changes, they say, one funeral at a time).

History / 81st Anniversary of Warsaw Uprising [72]

just as Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine

That's kind of a myth.... not even Kruschev could just arbitrarily do that. It was based on real policy and even a kind of attempt (by weird soviet standards) to make things more efficient.
It was dependent on water from Ukraine (so easier to coordinate in the same ssr) and they wanted to improve agriculture (Ukrainians have always been better farmers than russians).
The idea it was some kind of spontaneous gesture or whatnot is a russian propaganda lie.
Stop believing russian propaganda!
