History / Pol-Shorpy Photo Thread [950]

I once read one of her books

I've never gone that far, though pre-internet I've read some real dreck left in hotels and offices.

Sissi who was visiting England at the time

Somehow that doesn't surprise me.

never..... again.....

At least it didn't have gypsies or regency beaus in.

write more books than she'd read?

723 including 23 in one year.

A fascinating character really.

Dame Barbara Cartland

She was cheated out of that prize.

She should have got it for volume alone and all the skinheads love her.

Derek Walcott,

Well deserved.

An odd thing to fight over. Who did the thugs want to win?

Food / Polish mustards [134]

mild, medium or hot.

Those terms are subjective. What's considered hot in PL is barely even medium in some other places.

I remember seeing a packet of kotlety sojowe mix which on the back of the packets had the phrase "if you want to make it spicy, add a tomato".

awful tasting mustard labelled 'French'

The dark one? That only exists in the UK as far as I know. Polish ones are a bit similar. Sort of between that and Dijon.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [818]

Exactly! 3 weeks difference

Yes, the stock photo was definitely taken at exactly the same time of year ;-)

I like butter but if it's melted, olive oil is better anyway.

That or dripping.

Try it with olive oil. Works nicely.

I'd leave the salt out if you're using ketchup and probably the pepper if there's Tabasco in.

Plus horseradish and mustard together seems like overkill. I'd just use the horseradish.

I forgot; a few drops of lemon juice too.

Food / Polish mustards [134]

made so differently

Made the usual way. Mayonnaise (ready made will do at a pinch), a little passata or a tiny tiny bit of tomato puree, either a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of Tabasco, a (very) little Worcester Sauce.

Pretty well standard.

stuffed

How odd. Perhaps spending your day with a bunch of ten year olds and your evenings with glassware and ethanol are taking its toll.

It is rather bland compared to the real thing.

'Twist'?

This is a thread about mustard.

And yes, the stuff in P9lish shops is bland and full of additives.

That's very eloquent.

Just a shame Polish mustard is so full of additives and uninspiring.

Your knowledge of mustards

Is greater than yours.

eeds. I showed two photos of mustard plan

I just buy mustard flour and don't do plant spotting or pointless riddles.

You should try some musztarda Ukraińska, it might do you some good.

It's delicious. The only Polish one worth buying. The rest are poor.

The French one is exciting with its unground seeds

Moutarde Ancienne.

It has whole mustard seeds, like Musztarda Ukraińska, but milder. Useful in cooking.

Pretty well the only foreign ones I'd buy.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland - part 2 [379]

Abortions are as old as the knowledge of pregnancy.

Exactly. And they happen by the thousand at home or in some dirty back room somewhere regardless of the law. Better to happen in a clinic than in someone's bathroom.
