"Baby please don't go" was a huge hit in Poland at the time. No, that wasn't Santor.

I didn't know that only Jews are allowed to immigrate to the US.

It just makes it a lot easier. The communist are Jews and so are the capitalist.

The communist are Jews

Jews are too smart to be communists. They are great at using communism to pluder and exploit the true believers.

What country is your home?

Jews are too smart to be communists

Wouldn't the word 'clever' fit better here?

Quoting:

Smart people are necessary when you have complicated situations to work out carefully over time.

Clever people are useful when the situation requires unusual and quick thinking in a way that will delight.

While in communist primary school, I remember we exchanged addresses of car companies located in Western countries. A good address might bring you sth that your peers appreciated very much and respected you for possessing - namely, brochures about the produced cars.

I still have that sheet of paper with the addresses in my archives. Some of them were located in Japan!

What I still find amasing is the fact that a lot of companies DID send the brochures to the communist country although they sold close to nothing there.
However, they displayed amasing anticipation skills coz I am sure some of those youngsters who had studied the brochures so carefully in their childhood later on decided to choose cars made by the company.

I remember one brochure I had - advertising a car which hasn`t been produced for decades. French Simca 1100!!!!

namely, brochures

Which are called prospekty in Polish. Prospects - a false friend for an English speaker so watch out!

youngsters who had studied the brochures so carefully in their childhood later on decided to choose cars made by the company.

After the collapse of communism, of course.

Communist propaganda covered the topic of coming Christmas as early as capitalist media, which means already in Novemeber.

The most important product brought to Poland for Christmas was tropical fruit - already in November the press triumphantly announced that "ships with citrus fruit have set off from foreign ports for the Christmas table".

One of my fave books as a boy was Method on Alcybiades. The story is set in early 1960s and shows a secondary school with single sex classes only for boys. Amasing!

In 1970s juice makers entered the market and by mid 1980s a lot of households acquired them. I remember the most popular juice we extracted in it was from carrots. First juice bars appeared in cities at the time. I remember visiting one located near our school - trendy juicing by students.

Bribery was widespread in communist Poland. I bribed a few dozen people in 1980s to get a better customer service. E.g, I bribed an experienced vet at a state vet clinic to operate on my dog instead of veterinary course students. Apart from his regular charge, I gave him a big jar of lemon tea flavour which a relative of mine sent me from West Germany. The dog survived the complicated operation and lived happily ever after. The doc was visibly satisfied.

At work, you can accept gifts worth up to €4.99. Anything above that must be given to the company, which must register them as donations.

Also depicted in the film Satan from 7th Grade made in 1960.

Watch from 4:15. Professor comes to class, wants to test students and big trouble breaks out. English subs though a bit messed however intelligent people will guess the meaning.

In 1980, after famous anti-communist strikes, their leader, Lech Wałęsa, uttered famous words: We will build a second Japan here!!!

He was heavily ridiculed for it by communists as well as his political rivals in the opposition circles. But his prophecy became cult and I have read/heard thousands of references to it over years.

It seems his words are slowly becoming flesh.

The economic landscape in 2025, however, looks different. According to the International Monetary Fund, Poland's current GDP per capita, taking into account purchasing power parity, is $54.5 thousand. In Japan, this indicator is $54.91 thousand.
