Anyone know what Socash means and where it's from? My great great grandmother came to the US in 1913 and her last name is Socash.
SOCASH is impossible in Polish. Could it have been Socharz or Sochacz (a peasant licenced to sell meat at the local market)
Harry

[Moved from]: Snios or Sniocz
Seeking infomration on my Great Grandfather's last name. Understand that the name used in the US is not recognizable as a Polish last name: Snios but is pronounced Snyosh. He came from Dubowo Russian Poland around 1905.

Śnios exists in Poland, root-word sen (sleep, dream). If you say it was pronounced Snyosh, then it might have originally been Śniosz or (less likely) Śnioś. A kindred surname is Śnioch. They all mean the same: dreamer, day-dreamer, someone with his head in the clouds.
