Bobyanz 1 | 1 10 Jan 2024 #1Hello,My last name is Yanzuk. I assume its Polish. I could really use some help on figuring out the different spelling of my surname. I have found various spellings I assume there various spellings. They are Janzuk, Yanczuk, Janczuk, Janczyk, Yanczyk. Any help would be great. Thank you
Atch 22 | 4,150 10 Jan 2024 #2There are no Polish surnames beginning with Y. In my opinion your name was probably originally Janczuk. The J in Polish is pronounced like Y in English so your ancestors probably changed the spelling to make life easier. The 'cz' is a bit like 'ch' in English but after a couple of generations families of Polish origins usually didn't speak much Polish anymore and didn't even know how to pronounce their own names correctly, so they probably just dropped the 'c' somewhere along the road as they couldn't see the point of it.
