Language / Bought "Rosetta Stone" software and trying to learn Polish... [59]

Have any of you had this issue and if so how did you resolve it?

Obviously you should make sure that your microphone is configured. Try recording sound in Windows sound recorder.

If you are unable to record, you may need to select the microphone you are using as the input device.
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio and choose the microphone you are using as the preferred device for recording.
Click on the box below which says "Use only preferred devices."
Go back and retry recording with Sound Recorder.

If it is an legit Rosetta Stone software version, then they should have a support section on their website.

Food / Let's Play a Game-Name a Polish Food (and if you like it or hate it) [12]

polishmama when creating a new thread, please put it in the correct forum. News, politics was not the correct one for this. :)

Kaszanka would be one Polish food that I dislike. Bigos doesn't look very appealing when you first see it, but tastes nice, so thumbs up for that.

Language / Word clarification: niespodzianka, dziwić / zdziwiłem. [17]

duźo,duźy,wiele,wielki,spory

These are expressions of quantity, similar to large, larger, big, bigger.

dużo is used with nouns that cannot be counted like water, noise. Wiele is used with nouns that can be counted like cars, books.

Zeti will hopefully see this and put us both right:)

Love / Good looking Polish women with ugly men [416]

Lots of English lose their front teethes during drunk fights.

Could be true! I also hear that many Greeks lose their front teeth after trying to hit on other
guys girlfriends.

Then Austin Powers didn't help either.

yeah baby!

Language / Pronunciation of vowels at the end of a word [28]

the pronouns "ty", "my", "wy" sound more or less like "teh", "meh", "veh" to my ears,

That's how they sound to me as well, only short and fast:) I think it's because foreign words play havoc with our ears when we are not used to hearing them. It took me ages to hear the small "p" sound at the start of przepraszam. Many letters also change to a different sound, especially if they are word final.

Language / Poles - don't fall into the French/Spanish trap re pronunciation/accent! [81]

Er, and most "foreign" people have funny accents when speaking English - this is my point!

Can't really see what your problem is, everyone is going to have a funny accent when not speaking their native language.

Poles, don't do it - please!

Poles are no different, just listen to one asking "does the sheets need changing? or are you going to the beach today? ;)

Language / Are the context of these Polish sentences correct? [101]

i talk to my cousin evry week more sometimes, so i can converse. there are a few holes in my understanding. is that any clearer.

This is good to hear. I can tell that you have put a lot of effort in to your studies in the last 15 months and you're probably more advanced than most people, who have studied by themselves for the same amount of time . As you know, the cases are the most difficult to master and are the hardest part of learning the language, so you will need to give much of your time to studying these. Try picking some short sentences and try to determine which case is used? There will be plenty of clues like word endings and prepositions etc to show you. This is one of the best ways to learn the grammar rules IMHO and will help you to understand why it's better to learn in small steps. If you try to take big steps, it will go over your head and you will learn nothing at all.

Language / Are the context of these Polish sentences correct? [101]

you could come to england with poor grammar, and say' me toalet' the grammar is all wrong, but i would know you wanted to go to the toilet or you wanted to know where the toilet was.
am i making any sense.

That's all very well for a couple of words, but what about trying to communicate in longer sentences? Even the most patient native speakers would find it difficult talking to you in Polish. If you are going to learn a second language, then it's best to learn it properly from the start.

If you don't then you will be wasting your time as you will never get to grips with the grammar of this very difficult language. A little at a time is the key, don't run before you can walk, as they say. Good luck with your studies, and try to take in the advice the good people in this thread have already given you.

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

who bumped it up,,,Vincent??????

There is no reason why myself or any other mod would bump up a thread. In fact it would be impossible without us posting something in it.

the "my threads" button doesnt create a post, so the Mods cant be trusted around here!

That is correct the "my threads" button doesn't create a post". As SeanBM explained to you, If you click on "my threads" instead of "latest" in error (they are very close to each other) then you might think that one of your old threads is active again. Of course if you were to post a message in it to complain that a mod has bumped up your old thread, then you would make live again on the main forums.

Language / Are the context of these Polish sentences correct? [101]

Thanks Justysia.

Btw. how would be in English Pan/Pani in such stentences like above ?

where do you live, sir/ma'am?

We are not so formal in the UK, so you can say "where do you live?" to anyone. A waiter or policeman might say "where do you live sir/madam/". Ma'am is reserved for female royalty.

Language / Are the context of these Polish sentences correct? [101]

co pan robi, kiedy idzie do domu w nocy

again, no pan. co robisz gdy wracasz nocą do domu? or co robisz w nocy gdy wracasz do domu?

Would the first quote not be a formal way of saying this? Using robi (third person singular) with Pan and the second quote more informal? I'm not saying anyone is wrong, just trying to learn from this myself.

Language / Does anybody know of a list of Polish-English False Friends and True Friends? [60]

What about true friends then? To make it easier, and to considerably shorten any list, you can probably exclude the more obvious Latin/Greek ones (e.g. psychology, hygiene etc) and stick to the more mundane.

If you would like a 3 page pdf on common words that are similar in Polish and English, then contact me by email, or send an email address by PM.

What is this pupper doing in the stream? What's her name?

I think that "pupper" is for scaring birds (scarecrow) and got washed away in the floods. Her name is probably Basia:)

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

Yet it got moved to off-topic, soon after it started.

I'm afraid as expected, the thread give very little advice on how to "improve your relationship with a Polish man/woman or Polish dating sites", but turned into nothing more than a joke thread.. Some members might also be offended to have their names mentioned in this thread should it stay on the public part of the forums. For visitors to the site the thread didn't give any advice on the guide lines you quoted.

UK, Ireland / Ive been in the UK for 6 days to relocate and im going back to Poland. [281]

There's no doubt that the non smoking ban and cheap supermarket drinks has contributed to many pubs losing trade as well. Some have shot themselves in the foot by being greedy. A bottle of larger that costs 99p in ASDA could cost £3.50 in a pub, especially "downtown"

UK, Ireland / What cigarettes are popular in England? i ask because of EXIT music festival [15]

Did someone take a survey on some scummy council estate?

People living on council estates are consumers too. I would assume the best survey would be to ask the leading manufacturers, which brands they produce the most due to demand in the UK?

Marlboro lights are the fags of choice amongst people I know.

I've noticed Marlboro lights seem to be the choice of many young women. Supposedly the "light" in the name means that it's more healthy for your lungs;)
