Travel / Poland Autostrada / Motorway Map [10]

Autostrada, Poland? do they exist? I've been on one and just as i got settled at cruising speed with a coffee it finished and I had to drive down country lanes to get to warsaw.

According to my polish friends poland will have a motorway network which is better than the UKs by 2012.

Work / 5 months looking for a job in PL and nothing! suggestions? [22]

delphiandomine:Certainly, I'd say that someone with a 5 month gap on his CV who is actively turning down jobs is certainly unemployable.

I am a HR manager and I have to agree with delphian on this one you will find it much easier to find a better job once you have a job,

Have you tried registering on goldenline.pl Its a very good headhunting site used by lots of recruiters.

Also have you approached the larger international companies with a base in Poland? Ie Dell, IBM etc.

I would also suggest registering with as many agencies as possible, Although initially the agency will take a commission from your salary you stand a very good chance of being taken on by the company directly.

Hays and Grafton are probably the largest in Poland with English speaking staff.

4000 pln a month is **** but then surely its better than nothing while gaining experience of how things are done (or not done) in Poland as once you have experience within Poland you are a much more attractive proposition than someone who has never worked in Poland?

hope it helps and good luck

Life / Car stereo thieves - is this a problem in Poland? [23]

I wouldn't worry about it, I had a fairly good system in a few of my cars and never got anything stolen,

How come you are after such a big setup? a decent set of component speakers behind the standard grills would sound nearly as good as a sub and amp,

Real Estate / Renting flats in Poland [13]

1800zl/month 35m2; 2400zl/month 58m2; 2800zl/month 76m2

Polish greed trying to make money out of unsuspecting expats makes me very angry, Why the overinflated prices? We pay less than 1800 pn a month for a luxury apartment in a very desirable area of poznan,

Life / Polish equivilent to T cut? Any ideas? [8]

I'll have a look for the stuff later, I bought a malluch (please dont laugh) and the paint has no shine whatsoever and i'm trying to bring back the shine, I did the tcut thing on an e30 bmw a few years back and it worked pretty well but this g3 sounds better, I just wanted to make it a bit tidier,

I used to use clay bars on the 7 series and they are excellent but due to my chronic laziness i don't think i can warrant claying a malluch :)

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

Not today my man, today i was driving with wife, baby and niece so good as gold. I do enjoy blasting the Kurwa boys right outta there when im on my own.

I enjoy letting rip and just laughing, I didn't realise they actually made a BMW 518i with less than 100 bhp till i came to poland, it seems to be the "ride" of choice amongst the poznan boys done good :)

Life / Can you keep a right hand drive car in Poland? [57]

Its not safer but its no worse, you just have to position the car correctly in order to see past and make sure in the right gear to get the most out of the engine (or in my car get ready to floor it and hope it kicks down).

It can be done safely,

Life / Can you keep a right hand drive car in Poland? [57]

I tried driving a LHD car a few times and simply hate it as it just doesn't feel right, As for reversing with your left hand it seems a far to big a job for a hand which you can't use for jobs which require accuracy,

RHD is much better from an ergonomics point of view and and also a safety point of view.

Life / Can you keep a right hand drive car in Poland? [57]

What is the obsession with converting the wheel to the other side? Keep the car on UK plates, insure it in the UK and take it to England once a year for an MOT, Driving a RHD car here is fine, overtaking isn't an issue once you get used to it and you don't get any fines from the police or speed cameras as they can't understand the uk documents.

Also for the money you spend on a LHD fiesta you can drive a RHD m3 with nearly 300 bhp so even though you're sat on the wrong side overtaking will still be easier and more fun.

Changing gear with your right hand sucks,

Love / Is Polish girls' beauty a myth? [78]

I wasn't talking about it from a dating point of view as i have no desire whatsoever to date a Polish girl and hope i never will, Most of the ones i've met have a serious attitude problem and are so self obsessed and rude its unbelievable, One of my best friends has been with a girl from warsaw and she is the most arrogant and bad mannered person i have ever had the misfortune to meet in my entire life. Also when you go into a shop, hotel or bar in Poland you are served by some sour faced fake tanned bint who finds it impossible to provide service with a smile, at least in other countries you get fake hospitality which is what people in customer facing jobs are paid to do, here when you ask a hotel receptionist for help or try to buy something in a shop they act as though you have disturbed their cigarette or conversation on Gadu Gadu.

I'm not saying all but Most are like this, I've met a few women here who are great fun but the majority have this complex which overides any other redeeming features they may have.

Why are there so many threads about Polish women? Theyre just the same as women everywhere else with a bad attitude and a sever inferiority complex. (well most I've met around 3 that are actually genuinely nice people)

Law / Taxes - Have not paid taxes yet for 2008 [6]

For the sake of 146pln is it not worth just calling them and paying them over the phone by card? Its not exactly a lot of money and it will avoid any future problems.

Life / Haunted Homes in Poland [173]

If you don't believe in God then why do you believe in Ghosts/the afterlife? Do you have an alter meaning to that? And no, religion isn't just going into a cold building to be told by someone in a dress how to behave... I would say those are my philosophy courses at my relatively old stone walled school.

Why should my non belief in god have any bearing on whether i believe in ghosts? I believe that the energy which is a persons soul has to go somewhere when their body dies but not necessarily a "heaven" or "hell" and some become trapped in the world with the living thus manifesting in visable apparitions or feelings etc

As for god and religion in general the bible has more plot holes and contradictions than an American sit com, Evolution has been scientifically proven so that proves that a "god" didn't create the world,

I'm not saying that all religious people are stupid as everyone has the right to believe what they want but I think the idea of having a big man with a beard sitting on a cloud watching your every move is somewhat archaic, I personally despise what religion stands for as the amount of people who have been killed in conflict over religion beggars belief.

Travel / Driving to Zakopane from England [21]

But the road from Krakow to Zakopane is a nightmare i drove that this year in January and i was shocked.

That road is however a great driving road when theres no snow at night with no traffic :) I had an awesome drive up there once, Theres some corners where the camber of the road is a bit dodgy and your heart misses a beat but it can be great fun.

This is how to have fun in the snow with a 4wd car an old bodyboard and a length of rope :D

Travel / Driving to Zakopane from England [21]

I don't think its so much as a legal requirement just highly recommended, If you are renting a minibus avoid anything transit or mercedes sprinter based as they are rear wheel drive and not as easy to control in icy conditions. Try and get a VW transporter or similar as they are front wheel drive with the engine directly over the front wheels helping with traction.

Travel / Driving to Russia via Poland Info on Ukraine Border [30]

In Russia it mostly concerns quality of diesel. That's the main reason why I still don't have a car with a diesel engine.

Thats probably the best way, do they dilute it with kerosene or something? Add to the fact that diesels make a horrific noise when you start them in the morning and fill pedestrians lungs up with carcinogenic soot and are shocking to drive give me a straight 6 bmw anyday :)

Everybody uses rim locks here. Unless you have them I strongly recommend you to keep an eye on your car.

I just kept my wheels in a shocking state thus putting people off stealing them...

Travel / Driving to Zakopane from England [21]

Continental do a fantastic all weather tyre which isn't too expensive you can order them in the uk, blackcircles.com or camskill do some good deals mail order, make sure you have esp/abs etc as it makes for better snow driving, Ideally use something 4wd like an impreza, audi quattro etc, My M3 used to get stuck for a past time :) I've driven through germany all times of the year and never really bothered with winter tyres just good all weather ones. Toyo proxy t1r are good in the snow due to their V shaped tread pattern but not ideal but better than most.

If you need help with your tyres pm me the tyre siza and i'll have a look for you (the numbers on the sidewall, ie 205/40/r17)

Tyre chains are generally banned on the road between zakapane and krakow and aren't really necessary in all honesty. If you hire a car in PL or ze fazzerland it will come fitted with suitable tyres so don't worry about that.

make sure you have european breakdown cover, I use green flag and they are excellent, recovered my Audi from a french autoroute and towed it all the way back to cornwall when the gearbox spewed its guts.

Driving in Poland is very differerent to in the UK and Germany due to the fact that all other roadusers are in fact incompetent egotistical idiots who overtake in stupid places and have no regard for other motorists. Theres other threads about this on here.

Make sure you have the full compliment of totally unecessary equipment in your car including warning triangle, first aid kit, spare bulbs, Fire extinguisher and those stupid high visability vests.

Regarding the ferry Norfolklines dover to dunkirk route is the cheapest at £30 each way on a roll up basis.

hope this helps
