Life / Polish people have low self-esteem? [80]

Daily Mail chooses to look where others don't. I like tabloid newspappers generaly because there's moore real news in them then in other, more respected newspappers that happen to have their bias on "progress", "jobs", "economy" etc, etc. Daily Mail doesn't ever make me feel brainwashed! Enough on tabloids!

I happened to visit Romania some time ago and would witness - what you call "law self esteem" there. Whenever the Romanians I met identified themselves as "Romanians" some tended to have sense of shame for being Romanian. It was strangly familiar to what some Poles feel.

Life / Polish people have low self-esteem? [80]

Don't Poles have better opinion in Scotland , Ireland rather then Enlgand proper? I've been reading many rather symphatethic comments toward Poles on forums and article comments made by Scotish and Irish.

Life / Polish people have low self-esteem? [80]

Honesty often isolates but only ones trying honesty would know about it.
I am such a great guy that I would never intimidate someone showing his weak side (at least consiously) but I've seen sharks eating flesh out of such people and had my share of performing in defesnive mode afterward.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

Does no one pick magic mushrooms in Polska?

I tried to find some but was unsucessfull so far. I was staring at pictures of magic mashrooms before I went to the forest but while I was there wasn't sure anymore what I was picking. I brought home some strange mushrooms and after carefull inspection they had to be thrown away. I did pick a small size bucket of regular eatable mushrooms (podgrzybki) though and was enjoying them for a week adding to everything I cooked.

There is one kind of mushrooms that is poisonous and similar to the eatable ones. I'm thinking about "kozaki". I have heard and read stories about people, usually kids ending up at hospital after eating mushroom. You need to eat a lot to get poisoned though! Some are supposedly very dangerous to your health but they are visibly different from he eatable ones.

Life / Getting a NIP or PESEL [21]

First you need your residency. You can get a temporary residency by going to the local council for the town/village you live in. Or, to arrange permanent residency which lasts for 5 years. This requires a photo card.

Either is fine for arranging the PESEL. Permanent residency costs about 30zl to prepare the card, and takes about a month.

To work, you need the equivalent of the UK tax code. So, you'd need to apply for a NIP. This is also done at your local council for the town/village.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

There was this German dude commenting on polish national television, comparing queues in Poland and Germany. He said polish line anywhere inside would form many curves, turns etc while the one in Germany would be always strait forcing people out of the building what in case of rain - he said - was disadvetegous.

I had myself recently an argument with an older lady pushing onto me her shoping cart while in line to the register. When I did complain to her she would tell my that I was "young and nervous" (which was true, but I had my reasons for the socond disposision). Anyway I still hate being touched by ppl who stand beside me in line and it seems only same age opposite sex tends to keep the right distance.

I'm reading a story on the net about polish bison (zubr) named Podziw (admiration) who was transfered from Wolin National Park to the forest near Miroslawiec, where it was to live free among other herd members. Somhow though Podziw decided to leave his new company and turned back apparently toward its old home, where he came from. After making some 150 km the animal was unfortunately killed by car on local road Nr 10, where its body was eventually found. The strange aspect is that its human caretakers decided to keep the "stuff" animal's head and keep it back in Miroslawiec forestry office...

Life / What makes you proud to be Polish? [150]

I'm proud for the progress we've made in last 17 years in general democratization, for all the small and big improvements in life, for some justice done here and there, for new police, mayors, street cars and bank accounts and bike paths.

Polonia / Interest in the remnant German community in Poland [29]

German minority in Poland consists of 150 000 people (2002)
Some of their organizations, periodicals, addresses are listetd there:

wspolnota-polska.org.pl/index.php?id=mn_niemcy

In some municipalities in Opole region they are in majority and are in political power as well. I don't know about them in towns you mentioned.

That would be yours kind of set of rules, Ranj, right? (providing that proper language is substituted accordingly to nationality).

Life / How are people from Warsaw viewed and why? [20]

Bad rap Warsaw has, has something to do with politics and television. All central offices are in Warsaw, media focuses on Warsaw, too showing the place as highly competitive and full of corupted individuals (mentaly corupted, too).

I find personally people in Warsaw very friendly, compare to where I live ( Szczecin :) ) which has much less friendlier bus drivers to give one example and has more of a gang culture, power tripping folks.

Warsaw is ugly though and had and has bad city planners plus it is loaded with cars everywhre.
Szczecin? ughhh has ..potentian maybe and good location (true)

Travel / Cathedrals in Poland [8]

The relatively new one in Lichen is pretty spectacular although it is kind of huge and probably too much overlaoads local nature.

News / Currency symbol, date in Polish [10]

It's old fashion maybe and disapearing but I've seen it written like this:
3 luty, 1999 or
22 sierpnia, 2003

People who do handwriting would often write dates using Roman numerals but only to indicate the month:

12. XII. 2007, 01.III. 2003 etc

Love / How do I approach or meet Polish women [34]

^
definitely! :)
From my experience you start with controlled honesty. You shoot strait but leave yourself a gate to withdraw into playing games. This way you find your answer if she likes you or not.

Like Goethe once said to his girl (more or less)

Do you want to play?
First, let's be serious and then
Oh! Let's play (babe*)
:)
*not from Goethe

Love / What do Polish guys do to date a woman? [38]

It's hard for them because they don't want to feel the pain of being rejected. They often would pretend that their interest is not serious or that you are one of the many they are caring about in the same time desiring you most of all walking createures on Eart.
