Travel / Going to Szczecin - other airports in Poland [18]

Szczecin has direct, daily and quite cheep Rynair connection from London Stanstead. Flights to London are likely to be a saver on flights from N. Zealand so you might want to take it into consideration. As for getting from Szczecin airport to town center - bus or train would get you in about one hour.

Life / Pre Paid Visa cards [27]

Toyota bank... toyotabank.pl would offer visa cc to its customers if you open and keep regular account for some time. It's not advertised but seems to be their practice.

Travel / Traveling to Koszalin? [13]

Your options are flying from London to Gdansk then 2.5 hrs by train to Koszalin OR from London to Szczecin and then 3-4 hours train ride to Koszalin OR to flying to Berlin, Germany and then some 6-8 hours by train.

Warsaw airport to Koszalin trip by train takes about 8-12 hours depending on train.

Koszalin is close to Baltic sea where you'd have many health retreat options - Mielno and Ustronie Morskie are 2 closest locations on the Baltic to consider

Life / So I had a get-together in Poland... [13]

In Poland a full responsibility to entertain guests remains on a hosting party. You asked to bring something to share , they did bring "something".

Probably they felt invited and expected you to provide anyway with their stuff being an extra. Unless of course you did change the course of event and all was clear enough to everyone that nobody but them would provide for the party.

That's how things work here. The local thinking goes: If I'm invited it is enough that I show up myslef and I excepct food specially but also drinks from the host to serve me.

All you get in exchange is an invitation but not always.

Life / 3 Things I LOVED about Poland [58]

Good, vacation attitude makes you look into the sunny side of things. We are here scared to death to enter the road as there's plenty of driving maniacs - don't get me started!

Crossing the roads where there's NO lights is a breathtaking adventure with a heart beat!
Won't start on parking culture here- I live here, local guy, know better.

Life / How many people really know English in Poland? [53]

English was taught in schools before 1989 but only students 15 yrs old and older - not in primary school like now. As for the age group I'd put it 50 and older had probably no schooling with english language at all.

Travel / Familiar with northwest poland? [4]

Klanino is a village of 600, some 25 km of KOSZALIN (100 000 ).
Your nearest airport is Lech Walesa Airport in Gdansk or Goleniow, Szczecin (100 km from Berlin, Germany - where you could consider landing as well.
Plenty of daily trains to Koszalin from anywhere.

Travel / canoeing/kayaking in Poland [13]

I'm getting myself ready for the first week of April, will do Odra and its canals and Regalica -all near Szczecin, Poland. Kayaks are some 35 pln for a day, 7 PLN per hour, or 75pln/day if we'd take the one with electric device, allowing smooth, slow flow - might be good for getting close to the birds. Main objective is photographing birds - my companion will do the job.

We plan to finish it all in nearby ...swimingpool park, with sauna, jacuzzi, hot pools etc

Travel / Back from Krakow an kielce [30]

Men in love are special in many ways. We are capable of doing some extraordinary things due to some hormons or something, ... like climibing onto 3rd floor balcony to our angel or making a 3 pointer from half court. It can be heroic, too!

We get this spacial ability -when in love - to focus and estimate chances sharply , then following on perfect execution with total confidence.

On the other hand Nitzche said about man-in-love "he was looking for an angel and became one" , so there's a danger involved - seen it many times.

Good luck to you both.
Irishdeano, if you are doing, planning to do something that "special" keep us informed. I'd sugest running naked into Korona Kielce soccer stadium, ..nah not that unusual but I'd see you at least on TV. Well, maybe consider anyway, could be your chance for your 15 min.

Travel / What's the fare from Kaliningrad to Malbrok by train? [3]

Good way to save on international trains is buying your ticket just to cross the border and then buying your next ticket on the train to continue. On polish trains it is 6.50 PLN extra; you need to ask for a ticket, don't wait for the checking.

As for the price from Kaliningrad you'd better check it localy. Warsaw to Kaliningrad via Malbork is about 100 PLN.
If you have any time in Malbork the castle there is on Unesco World Heritage list, never been there myself but probably worth seeing if you like that sort of sightseeing.

Yes, direct train is the best option here.
The bus trip from Zakopane - Krakow would run some 2 hrs compared to over 3 hours by train but I wouldn't bother saving that time with such a long trip you are to take.

As your trip to Malbork would take some 13 hours
I recommend early booking your seat for MIEJSCE DO LEZENIA -Couchettes- or more expensive -SYPIALNY- Sleeping-car.
Couchettes are some 20-25 PLN extra and have no beding, ask for 4 people room (there are 6 and 4)
If you decide on traveling on regular ticket-seat no need to buy your ticket early as seats are not reserved on this train.
The train you are to take has only class 2 seats.

If you plan to take the train from Zakopane toward Krakow I'd recommend not to. You'd better off to take the bus to Krakow - many daily departures and your trip would be shorter and likely cheaper, too.

As for PKP trains - unless you travel more then 3 hours taking 1st class doesn't make that much difference - 1st class has 6 or 4 passengers while 2nd has usually 8.

Most likely you'd be traveling just with your family as trains are not overcrowded. Not sure about "popular dates" . Now school kids from 2 regions (mazowieckie and slaskie) are starting their winter holidays and for some the destinations would be Zakopane for sure. Trains are then likely to be somewhat crowded on weekends.

Travel / Train Fares; train schedule in Poland has changed? [13]

Here is some more info, Lori on PKP: when traveling on weekends (Friday 7PM to Monday 6 AM) your best deal would be gettin BILET PODROZNIKA - valid for all TLK and P trains withing this time frame . Price 65 PLN 2nd class and 95 PLN in 1st

It's a ticket with your name on it, so when buying you'd need to give your name and be ready to show some ID on the trains along with your tickets. Well, in fact they seldom check your ID with this ticket. Good deal oaverall and on some routes PLK or P are not that slower then IC or EX trains.

Travel / Train Fares; train schedule in Poland has changed? [13]

Reservations fare is required on both , 2nd and 1st class trains. Only trains class P (pospieszny) are without it. You would usually get yours seat number and pay for it along when buying ticket at train station - on all IC, Ex, TLK trains.

You can also buy your ticket along with your seat reservation ON the train; they'd charge something around 6 PLN extra. If all train seats are taken you'd have to stand untill someone gets off but you are still charged for your ..seat (reservation) - on IC, TLK, EX trains.

Kowalski is my forum name only but I hope Minnesota Kowalski sells some stuff you enjoy and...is doing well.

History / "Mala Moskwa" and "Janosik" - new Polish movies [5]

Mala Moskwa opens this Friday in cinemas throughout Poland. It's an awarded on Polish Films Festival feature, with a pretty Russian actress playing a main character . She's in the movie a wife of a Russian officer stationed in Legnica, Poland in the 60ties; falls in love with Poland and Polish guy (also a soldier) and I think she does or wants to marry him.

What we are to see in this film is also a daily life of polish town Legnica, with 60 000 Russian soldiers living along Poles but practicly (as I understand) separated from the locals and forbiden to maintain any closer relationships with them.

Love, the Russians in Poland, the 60ties and probably fair dialogues ....
I'm am to see this movie on Friday.
Anybody in Poland willing to share opinions on this movie welcomed. No subtitles.
