Life / Why build a supermarket with 20 checkouts with only 3 till staff? [46]

Asking for change or product not scanning on till or those magnet things not working so you cant have your stuff without beeping through the gates or tag taken off.

Annoying, frustraiting waste of time. And then you see some employees of supermarket walking around doing absolutely nothing.
Funny thing is that at supermarkets only about 1/3 of employees is till trained.
Strange!!!
But surley it shouldnt take talking to manager, writing letters or getting papers involved to sort it. I blame it on managment being useless and having no clue what the hell is going on on the shopfloor.

Life / why do People in Poland speak so quietly? [23]

I guess we just dont want to attract too much attention to ourselves when speaking on the phone. Its that usually phone conversations are private, no need whole world to listen to what we are saying :)

And drive through ATMs/stores - wait a bit longer and they will be there.

Language / PRONUNCIATION OF ENGLISH WORDS IN POLAND [24]

But to be honest it works both ways.
How many times i saw English-polish notices in surgery/shops/bus and was wondering what the hell they meant when they run it through english-polish translator.

And same - you would think there is enough polish people in the UK that someone could at least had a look at them :)

UK, Ireland / The paradox of Polish drivers getting car insurance in the UK [14]

I actually passed my licence in UK and was here for over 2 when i did it but still it was very expensice to insure my little car.

Now after no claim discount is not that bad.
My suggestion - insure that car in your name and just add her as a second driver. Yes it will be slightly more expensive but nothing like she would pay on her own. Plus she can start getting her own no claim during that period..

Good luck

Life / Parking on the sidewalks in Poland - why is it allowed? [8]

Ocasionally in the city center someone might get a fine but usually its not enforced to leave at lest some of pavement free. Especially if its area of the city with 11 story blocks of flats. That gives you around 60 families and lets say a car each - not easy situation.

People in Poland are still not used to pay for parking next to their home. If they pay its usually "parking strzezony" (guarded park space).

One of those things you just have to get used to :)

Life / Poles in Poland: How did you learn your English? [60]

My story:
Private lessons since i was about 7. My mum made me attend it.
Then cartoon network lol
After that school, films, music, books
But truth to be told i only gained full comfidence in speaking after coming to England:)
I think everyone had that barrier in actually speaking. Our schools are very good at giving us gramma & ability to write foreign language but not as good in just normal, every day conversations.

I also can speak itallian (well sadly i got out of practise on that one a bit :(

Love / Polish honey's rules and regulations [14]

Do not let him control everything and basically be forced to ask his permission for everything. Thats not how it works.

Life / What is the best Polish book ever written. [23]

depends what sort of books your into.
If you want something because its polish - go for things like Sienkiewicz, Mickiewicz etc.
Most famous and worth reading. Also there is quite few books about "Columbs" generation -WWII generation of young people that is absolutely brilliant. Of that i would say "Kamienie na szaniec" is a good start.

If you want just good read - still depends on what books you like.
I would recomment Sapkowski but thats because im a fan :) Also Chmielewska is good read.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

I spent most of my childhood picking mushrooms around autumn time. Someone mentioned 45 minutes ? Huh try 5 hours with my parents :) Wake up at 5 am and off we go :)

But it is quite relaxing and enjoyable experience. Just a nice long walk in the woods with occasional back pain from bending to pick them up :)

And nothing better than fresh made grzyby w smietanie when you come back :)
Whatever you say about people picking mushroom - try to imagine Wigilia without pierogi z kapusta i grzybami! I can't so bless my parents for still going mushroom picking :)

Love / Advice for meeting her Polish parents! [44]

Be polite and dont show too much of intimate affection towards their daughter (all deep intimate kisses is a no no)
Its nice to bring some flowers for mother and alcohol to dad.
And if her mum is cooking - make sure you eat everything and you love the food (regardless of it actual taste :))
Good luck

They do 100 frozen samosas for £13 as well - beat that! :)

Price maybe good - but what about the taste ? And what things are going into those samosas?

UK, Ireland / Polish meat in English supermarkets? [73]

Strangely, the best fish and chips round here are sold by a Pakistani/Middle-Eastern takeaway!

Nope i disagree - they murder fish big time. Its dry and smells like curry lol
