UK, Ireland / Getting married to a Polish Citizen in the UK [371]

Re: Elulka

Hi there!

I am sure there must be a way your boyfirnd can get a visa to Poland. As long as I know, he should have a formal invitation - you get it in your local Immigration Ofiice (Urzad do Spraw Cudzoziemcow). There you declare that during your stay you take full responsibility for your visitor, you'll support him financially, he'll stay at your place ect. Such paper is given for 3 months the most. To be able to extend the stay, he has to apply for a temporary residence card (karta tymczasowego pobytu). To apply, he needs his birth certificate, proof of not owing any taxes in his home country, proof of no crime record and a place to stay here. The place to stay means owing a flat or house (I guess you don't) or if you live with your parents, they can declare he'll stay there. Same goes for money - if you don't work, your parents can declare they will support him for as long as he stays.

Meanwhile, the sooner you get married, the better. If you make it in the first three months, you have better chances for the card, plus the wedding is a good reason to come, isn't it?

Put on a big smile and go to your local registrar (USC) and find out exactly what papers you need. Go to Immograton office and explain what you're planning (just don't mention earlier problems - say this is what you planned from the start and they're there to help you). Have a sworn translator ready (tlumacz przysiegly) - looking for one will lose valuable time. If you get all the papers, you'll succeed.

Good luck, girl! :)

Life / Having a Baby in Poland [28]

MTA,

if you are getting military or some kind of private assistance, you have nothing to worry about. There are stories about births that may worry you, but they happen only in public places (which I escaped, giving birth to my son in the UK). If I were you, I'd focus on your birth plan as some things are routine here and may not be in the US, and the other way round.

It should be all right, don't worry. All the best.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

Poland will never be a rich country and will always be trailing western type countries, the reason is that it has very little natural resources

Russia has almost all the natural resources - does it make it rich??? Bolivia and Venezuela too, still they're in crisis. It's been a while since natural resources determine the wealth of a country.

very little tourist spots

Disagree. If it was so, the tourism wouldn't be rising and it clearly is. Two types of destinations: historical cities and nature.

poles do not understand the mechanics of a business

Those who wan to do business learn it. Those who don't need it, don't learn. Logical.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

Bossie,

My only arguement would be that five of the things on my list are slowly taking place now

I agree with you there, excepr for agriculture perhaps.

People strike when they're not afraid to lose their jobs, and it's rare in Pl, only miners, nurses and doctors actually do that. All the rest prefer to work for less in Poland or for more abroad.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

Wroclaw, you seem very optimistic here. Any changes for worse you can think of? criminal rates rising due to lack of spaces in prisons? More bribery? More drugs? More and more idiots coming to power? Collapse of underfunded public sectors, i.e. education and health service? Property prices bubble? Shortage of those willing to pay taxes for the growing number of those retired?

Don't get me wrong, I hope you prove to be right and I to be wrong but life's not all pink, is it?

Love / Racism and Religion in Polish relationships [209]

UK people....with very bad sense of grammer

Oh, yes, I totally agree here. One of my Polish friends married an English guy and ended up correcting his mistakes all the time and getting angry that he doesn't know what a noun is, not to mention spelling, syntax, tenses ect.

Love / Are you in a Polish-nonPolish relationship? [150]

we are both very stubborn

Has it ever occured to you that when it comes to confrontation between nations and cultures we all appear a little more stubborn than normally? That's true of me, at least...

Travel / Pubs or disco in Wroclaw, Krakow, and Warszawa? [30]

the music is good in clubs wherever you go in Wroclaw

Well, you enter a place, you listen out for what's sounding inside and you enter or leave for anothar place. Generally speaking there's a place for everyone :)

Even though they may hate us because we are in their country, i agree with them that we should stay in our own.

don't bother stroking his tongue...

It might be funny though, just picture someone trying to do it... :)

And since we're not all going to be there, I suggest organizing something later early enough for everyone to know in time.

Language / How to greet the store personel in Polish? [8]

"Poproszę o kopertę, papier w linię i długopis"

I think this is the most common way of asking for things an the simplest at the same time. My husband always uses it (Polish learner) and so do I (native Pl). You can also omit 'o'.

Language / kaboom, ruff ruff ruff, meow, or moo, or bang! - sound effects in Polish? [29]

I thought that there are more sound imitating words than just those of animals.

Bum /boom/ - sound of an explosion or impact
trach /tra-h/ - when sth breaks, esp. wood
wrrr /vrrr/ - a car (or an angry dog)
plaś /plash/ - when sth wet falls, e.g. a jelly on a plate
łup /woop/ - when you hit yourself or sth with great force
dup /doop/ - as above but a rude version (dupa=ass) so super dooper sounds funny
puk puk /pook pook/ or stuk stuk /stook stook/ - knock knock
pstryk /pstrick/ - when you swith the light on or click your fingers

Can anyone think of any more?

OK, all fine, but can you guys tell me where Fredro is?...

Personally I'd prefer to meet in front of the Opera house, everyone knows where it is plus you can protect youself from the rain (it's raining now...). If not, just locate Mr. Fredro for me.

Or we could just meet there, it's inside the Podwale department store, entrance from Swidnicka.

So?

Food / Magii Sauce? [5]

The name comes from a company which invented Maggi. Now many companies produce similar seasoning usually called Przyprawa do zupwith little difference in taste but the most popular is Winiary. If you can't find it, the closest I know is soy sauce, a mostly salty flavour but with a twist.

I've just found the thread about online deli shops for the USA, look for Polish Online Deli serving the US they should have maggi

Travel / Krakow/Zakopane vs Gdansk - where to spend my time? [27]

I'm not a mountain kind of person so all year round I recommend Gdansk and the Tri-City. You can go sightseeing if you like, you can smell the sea on the Sopot pier (it's free this time of the year), shop till you drop and enjoy great nightlife.

Loads of information, good link, thanks. I don't miss Zakopane but I just can't wait till I go to Gdansk again in spite of the fact that I've been there so many times :)

And when are we all [Wroclaw gang] going out for a beer ?

How about this Saturday? Or any other weekend? I suppose there are going to be more than three of us but even if, why shouldn't we?

English pubs in Wroclaw

Have you tried Haggis in Swidnicka? They've got this big flat screen and the place is nice, near the strict centre, some 100m from the Opera House.

Love / Racism and Religion in Polish relationships [209]

I was stunned when i found out you were a girl,

Oh, BP, what a pity... So you did notice that you wrote 150 posts but didn't notice that under every name and the no. of posts there's also information about gender... You don't have to look far, it's all here, every time. Or maybe it's just for those who read and listen, not just talk?

How old are you anyway? Why cant you just grow up?

Ola, he claims to be at university but...

And he is in the States because "his parents dragged him there". Now that he's a big boy, he goes to school there. Why? Because his parents told him to.

And now he wants to change the world (or just one country) by telling others to go to Poland. Sweet, isn't it? Almost innocent. Especially if you say it from overseas...

I love all white cultures

Now, for twenty posts I have been trying to explain BP that race is one thing and culture another. Awww, what a pity, hasn't worked. That mind is just a tiny little bit too tight...

Ok, let's not be nasty and cruel, let's give BP one more chance. Here's the question:

Which of the following cultures are "white"?

Brazilian
American
Italian
French
Namibian
Spanish
British
Argentinian
Iranian
any other?

Now, don't google anything or consider yourself a loser straight away. Your time starts now!
