Life / Army National Service in Poland [95]

edit:

To make it clear.. I'm talking about Polish reality, not generally about world-wide things..

Well i ask you to say that to all those families who have lost, sons, daughters, husbands, children, etc etc in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia etc etc.

Do you think that these people who joining army are send there? NO! They would have been killed very fast.... Only professional soldiers _who want_ to go there are send there... they make there good money and that's the main reason why they go there. It's their choice. We are not in USA, this is Poland... don't forget.

I can't believe somebody has the view that the army, is for people who don't want to study.

In fact - yes - many people think here that way. But I will say it again.... there is no war in Poland, nothing is going on here.

Life / Army National Service in Poland [95]

There is no war, sorry but I have better things to do than running with many armed half-brained guys in the field and loosing 9 months. Many people in Poland think that an army is for people who don't know what to do with their lives or they don't want to study... in 5-10 years time we will have only proffesional army and joining army will be your own choice.

Life / Internet access via Sony Ericsson GC89 and cellphone provider [11]

It may not be moral but its not illegal.

Unless we are talking about open hot spots _it is_ illegal. Besides... someone for example have to be sure that he will connect to the internet every day at some hours. In this case scanning for unsecured wireless networks is not an option.

if Poland has national service or whether the army

Yes, there is. Oficially every man (19+ years old) should go to the army for 9 months, but... if you study they don't take you ;) Besides there is many 'unofficial' or half official ways what you can do when you don't want to serve your country ;) It's a bit complicated topic, maybe someone else will write sth more.

Feedback / forum new feature request ;) - ignore a member [26]

its admitting your weak and you can't deal with other peoples opinions whether or not they are right or wrong.

Well, I don't want to block anybody who disagree with me, but there is at least one person who offense Poles all the time and I'm sick with it. I would like to have an option which would allow me not to see posts of this person anymore.

Does that mean they could not physically see anything that person wrote?

Yes, with one exception - if someone will quote person which we added to our blacklist then we see quoted text (written by person who we have blocked).

but it doesn't leave room for people to change and grow on each other.

yes, but in my opinion some people will never change ... besides you can always remove a person from your's blacklist.

Feedback / forum new feature request ;) - ignore a member [26]

Hi, I think that it would be a great idea to make an option which allow us to ignore some registered members on this forum. Everyone could have own 'blacklist' with posters which s/he doesn't want to see anymore (I mean their posts/replies). I know it's not easy to implement (+performance issues)... but maybe some day? ;)

News / How Poles truly feel about their situation in Poland and being in EU? [76]

I think that it is the worst thing that has ever happened and I for one was always one hundred per cent against it.

but as far as I know you are not a Pole and probably you have had all these rights like other people from EU countries (I mean especially possibility to getting work wherever you wanted and easy travelling withour visas) while we were trying to join the European Union. For me now it's just easier and I appreciate it.

You don't have to agree with me

Sorry, but agree on what? I've made a question - what somebody want to have so many children while s/he can't afford for that? Is this normal? I think that most of these people didn't want to have more than 2 or 3, but they just haven't used condoms (or similar things). I'm not sure why, maybe because their priests told them that this is a sin or they didn't want to spend money on it. btw, I know it's not my business... but most of the families with many children live in poverty, and maybe if they had less children, they would live better...

In my opinion our goverment should spend more money to help young people who want to start their own business and not for social welfares.

Yes, we are worried.

No, you are worried, I'm not and many of my friends also aren't worried. Just speak for yourself, it's your right :-)

Zwłaszcza gdy mają więcej niż 2-3 dzieci

So why somebody want to have more than 2 or 3 children while s/he can't afford for that? Sorry, but it's just wrong, I will never understand this kind of people.

Travel / vacation in Krakow, where 2 go out? [12]

Of course is so much easier to get there but what about adventure?

Roztoczański Park Narodowy, Pojezierze Mazurskie, Pojezierze £ęczyńsko-Włodawskie, Bieszczady... google it, lovely places (if you know where to go). These are places where you can relax, not many tourists, just peace and quite.

News / Father Rydzyk: Any comments? [28]

and also, don't be too hard on older people,

I'm not... I understand that they were growing up during hard times and education was far from what we have today. The truth is that if people aren't educated it's easier to manipulate them and that's why Rydzyk has so many supporters. In my opinion he is just a good businessman, nothing more. For me EOT.

News / How Poles truly feel about their situation in Poland and being in EU? [76]

I just want to know how Poles truly feel about their situation in Poland and being a part of the EU

I feel good ;) I can go to many EU countries if I want (without trying to get visa), I can live and work or study there (well, not everywhere yet, but it will change). There are many more options than in the past and I'm happy with that. As everything joining to the EU has its pros and cons, but I think it's good that we joined.

News / Father Rydzyk: Any comments? [28]

it seems that many young Poles dontlike his Radio Mayja because it is very conservative/Catholic in tone

To make it clear... I don't know single person between 15 - 25 yrs old who supports Rydzyk or listen to his radio. I think that most of his supporters are not well educated, older people, mostly 50+ years old.

Life / 6-month contract for internet in Warsaw [3]

Hi, I am moving to Warsaw in September for 6 months to work there. An apartment with phone line is already set up. But can anyone tell me if I will be able to get broadband adsl/cable internet just for 6 months,

Yes, just without any discounts...

who are the best providers (preferably with English-speaking phone lines as my Polish is minimal at the moment!).

Probably the best choice to you is to get internet access from company which provide you phone line or cable tv.

Also are the ISPs able to provide equipment or will I have to bring my own?

Yes they do, don't buy anything on your own.

Language / Why is the language so different in the South of poland? [5]

why is it so different from standard polish?which version is better? Northern or southern?

It's just different dialect... just like different versions of English, for example I've heard that it's hard to understand Irish people at first (for not native English) even if you think you know English pretty good. What about better.... well it's better to learn northern version, southern is reserved for highlanders.

USA, Canada / Americans who call themselves Polish - how do you feel about that? [112]

How do you feel about Americanss who call themselves Polish even though they speak English with an american accent and know very little Polish, have lived in the US most of their life, practise US customs etc?

They can call themself whatever they want... it's their right.

Do you think that they are kidding themselves that they are Polish?

Yes, they're Americans with Polish roots.

Should they simply say they are americans?

yes

but this is only my opinion.

Law / Amount of capital to start a small business in Poland? [32]

and second idea is Pub with what prices pub dreams start?

Well, running pub is very complicated thing ... much of paper work, all permisions and so on. Costs depends of place where you want to run it, how big it will be, what style and much more. I think (but I might be wrong) that you need at least 100k PLN to start and monthly costs of running will be around 10k PLN (for small-medium size bar in town centre) .

Life / Why do other Polish people hate Warsavians? [12]

It's not the rule that people from another cities don't like these ones living in Warsaw... These ones who judge you on where you live obviously are retarded.

Law / Amount of capital to start a small business in Poland? [32]

40.000 zl can be enough for start planning?

For language school? Well, I suppose that would be enought for small one, I mean small local, 1-2 employees with salary not higher than 2500PLN.. and with 40k PLN company should survive first 3-4 months. For caffe/pub you need much more $.

edit:
I'm not sure if local is good word, I meant place where the language school will be teaching.

Life / Internet access via Sony Ericsson GC89 and cellphone provider [11]

It's funny because I was actually thinking about this, too. I have a V195 and it says it supports GPRS, but I could never figure out how to make it work with my laptop to get Internet access.

It seems this phone support bluetooth so get some USB Bluetooth Dongle (5-15$) and configure your system and phone. You should know that gprs is damn slow, but it will be ok for sending text emails, chatting on msn and so on.

Life / Internet access via Sony Ericsson GC89 and cellphone provider [11]

Actually, the purpose of the GC89 device is to allow your laptop to surf the Internet using your cellphone providers network. I already have a phone for use for calling. I just need a means to access the Internet while I'm outside from the populous areas

You can use your cell as a modem to connect to the internet. Just take a look whether your phone support gprs (which in almost cases is true) and optionally edge or umts. Many gsm operators provide access to the internet even when you use their prepaid services. Their web sites:

orange.pl
simplus.pl you already know
eragsm.pl/pl
playmobile.pl

I don't know exact prices, but I think that will be approximately 0,20-0,40PLN for every 100 Kb (sent + received).
