Language / A Native American or a Native Pole: Who is better into which language? [116]

Good post by the original poster.

whoever said Polish grammar takes a year to learn, lay off the drugs, I'm at it nearly 3 years now and still have only a bare grasp of it.

Out of all the languages I've learned Polish is the most difficult.
There is close to no standardisation, exteremly difficult for outsiders to follow.

English on the other hand is one of the easiest languages, highly standardised.
Followed closely by Spanish, then French, then German (only because German has 4 cases), then Gaelic languages such as Irish.

Polish is in the top 5most difficult languages in the world, anyone who thinks otherwise either grew up speaking the language or just doesn't have a clue

And by the way, half the polish people I meet can't even speak Polish that well either, don't get me started on spelling.

Says something.

Life / Is there anything worse than Polish rap? [148]

US Rap of 1987 to 1997 is the golden era.
Modern American rap music can't even be used for torture in AbuGharaib, its just pathetic.

As someone who used to be an avid fan of all rap music, its obvious and fair to say French and Polish rap have been carrying the torch for quite a while now.The American stuff has degenerated into utter shite.

The rap worse than the US stuff is the English rap. Thats so bad its not even funny.

Life / Is there anything worse than Polish rap? [148]

English rap isn't always so bad, is it? I don't think so.
Danny you from Ireland, are there any Irish rap groups you'd like to recommend?
(Hope its not that "Spiral" guy from Big Brother LOL! )

LOL :)

Sorry I've nothing to recommend, I lost touch with the rap scene a few years ago at this stage, more into Global Underground these days,

News / Are there any other countries that Polish immigrants are going to? [70]

Those numbers are way out, those are the census numbers iirc, hardly accurate.

I met a certain civil servant recently who reckons the number of Polish in Ireland is closer to 400k than 200k. The UK also have a lot of 'unregistered' Poles.

There are also a huge amount of Chinese in Ireland, but they are not as visible as Poles obviously.

I believe Iberia relaxed their laws with regard to immigrants last summer (summer '06) or at least since that document was published.

There are other reasons that people are ignoring why Ireland/UK are so favoured, for example:

Economic - The growth of the economy relative to the population, favourable ratio
Social Welfare - Strong social welfare system in UK, moderate in IRL
Language - 1st language in IRL/UK is English, majority of French/Spanish often refuse to speak English
Previous Immigrants - UK is overrun by immigrants already, but they fail to take any responsible action. Ireland never had much of an immigrant population before aside from a few thousand nigerian and romanian.

Life / How do young Polish couples cope with financial issues? [11]

I've noticed that Polish people get married and have children very early compared to people in Ireland.
Even the Polish people who live and work in Ireland are getting married and having children in their early 20s. While I don't criticise their decision and agree that perhaps it makes more sense to have children when you are younger and healthier, I do wonder how these people cope with financial issues etc.?

Most young people in Ireland cannot dream of buying a house, not to mention getting married and starting a family. Despite the fact that I've seen the Polish economy improve significantly over the last 3 years I've been visiting, I am still amazed at how people can afford to have children. How do they manage?

Most people in Ireland tend to wait until late 20's (29,29,30) to marry and start a family.
For me, its out of necessity, not out of choice.

Language / what is the difference between prosze and poprosze? [39]

Hi,

think of it as the difference between how the queen would speak and you would speak

you would say, I would like x,y,z (prosze)
the queen would say, one would like x,y,z (poprosze)

you would say, go f*ck yourself
the queen would say, would one go f*ck one's self
hitler would say, f*cken sie bitte

Travel / The best city/town in Poland for: A) holidays B) living [18]

Thanks for replies everyone, but lets lay off Michal, he is entitled to his opinion.
And lets no overreact, he didn't say he hated Poland, he just said that he finds it boring.

My fiancee and sister went to Gdansk yesterday, I would have liked to go but I couldn't get holidays from work.
I found Poland very exciting the first time I went, the 2nd time I went to Zakopane which was good for a number of days but I think we stayed too long as I was bored after a few days. Skiing and mountains aren't really that exciting for me to do it for a week.

The third time, we just went to my girlfriends town for XMAS, it was very boring because the gym had gone bankrupt and moved to poznan and there wasn't much for me to do, although her dad tried hard in fairness to him, took me to see the gigantic cathedral and a few other things. Not as impressive as Rome, but still very impressive.

I don't really want to go back to visit my girlfriends family home so much, there are other places I would like to see like Spain, Greece, Egypt.

I can think of some interesting things I would like to do in Poland such as visit Auschwitz etc., but its not really a possibility due to her family obligations. I coudln't even really get a chance to explore Warsaw, I'm sure ye know why.

So after xmas, I decided to stop visiting Poland for a while.
But we will get married there next year so it won't be for too long :-)

Puzzler, I'm not sure if your 1st or 2nd generation Polish, what city would you recommend for a non-native if he decided he would like to move to Poland in the future?

Dannyboy!
Don't wish to appear rude, but the borsht (sorry, proper Polish "barszczt..")-belt humor is rather out of place, plus, your remarks essentially teach us nothing.

Guess I seem the proverbial sour-pickle puss, but, the last part particularly rubbed me the wrong way.

Marek

Marek, I strongly disagree, but your entitled to your opinion and I take note.

I was demonstrating the use of first person and third person, or snobbery as some people like to call it ;-) , (I would, One would) in what I considered to be a humorous manner.

This construction doesn't really exist in Polish from what I've been taught.

I'm sorry you didn't find it humorous, I'm going off for a good cry now!

lets lay off Michal,

with respect danny boy, Michal seems to hate a lot of things about the Polish and many members of this forum......read back on posts.....

posters have just had enough of the constant derogatory comments that's all.....

This is a Polish Forum not a hate Forum and if Michal could remember that and post more positively then I am sure he would not be facing any back lash. This has gone on for a long time.......

I didn't read his previous posts, but I didn't see anything in this post which would imply that he hated Poland.
I do understand what your saying about the hatred thing tho, all the petty bickering does my head in too, thats why I started this thread, to get away from that.

he sure is entitled to his opinion but if you read over his many, many posts then you'll see that he does seem to dislike Poland (despite visiting it often) and Polish people. He posts upsetting things often and then argues with people who disagree with him. Its like a hobby.

As I said above, I didn't read his previous posts so I can't comment.

As for yourself. You don't seem over impressed with Poland either. You maybe should have made the effort to get to Gdansk as nothing else has apparently tickled your pickle!

I did "make the effort" to get to Gdansk, I couldn't go because of work obligations.

As i wrote above, I did find other things in Poland interesting. If you reread it, you'll see that I said I was bored when I was staying with my girlfriend's family.

I'm sure if I had a chance to hop on a train and travel around a bit, I would have a great time, but I have to know where to visit first - the reason for this thread.

My friend is from Warsaw and other Polish people will often refuse to talk to him or turn their nose up at him because he is from Warsaw, why is this?

Language / Why is the language so different in the South of poland? [5]

I find the language around Norther Poland is not so difficult to understand, but the language used in the south is quite difficult.

why is it so different from standard polish?
which version is better? Northern or southern?

Life / Why do other Polish people hate Warsavians? [12]

so its an inferiority complex?
because he is from the capital and they are jealous?
or perhaps there is some other reason I don't know about ?

Is it quite common or just limited to young male poles?
For example, would a 40year old farmer act like this?

USA, Canada / Americans who call themselves Polish - how do you feel about that? [112]

How do you feel about Americanss who call themselves Polish even though they speak English with an american accent and know very little Polish, have lived in the US most of their life, practise US customs etc?

Do you think that they are kidding themselves that they are Polish?
Should they simply say they are americans?

Danny I find this a fruitless attempt .. whatever your reasons..

Patrycja, I don't understand what you mean, could you clarify that for me please?

I'm taking a guess that your asking me why I would ask this question, the reason I ask is because there are many people in the United States who are ethnically Irish but claim to be fully Irish and tend to forget that they are Americans.

Of course, when its someone incredible like JFK, nobody in Ireland willl mention he is american, he is Irish of course ;-)

I'd like to know what the heck an American accent sounds like!

HAHAHA

Are you taking the **** or serious?

The American accent is the most easily distinguished accent in the world, even easier to recognize than a scottish accent.

ahhhhh I see how it works.. so All I need to do is play in few movies and I will
be polish.. :)))

Play in a few movies!?
Mother of God, you poor woman, do you not know who JFK was!!??

I'm taking a guess that your asking me why I would ask this question,

Good guess :))

to many times people say over and over. your American..

We know this.. but.. to many times I keep repeating myself.. Aside from the
American indians.. who can say their roots stem from American soil..
mine as well as a good 3/4 if not more are all of some other ethnic background.
who all immigrated from some other country..

But that policy makes no sense at all!

How do you think the native Americans got to America? Through a land bridge 10,000 years ago. They are not an indigenous people, they simply emigrated a few millenia before everyone else.

Caucasians are not indigenous to Europe, we orginally come from either Northern Africa or India.

Irish People in Northern Ireland today are descended from people who came from Scotland or England only a couple of hundred years ago.
They call themselves Irish, even though they maintain clannish politics etc.

History / Worst Polish leader Lech Kaczynski or King Stanislaw Poniatowski? [44]

I remember posting a similar thread to this before on PF.com

A lot of the Polish I know were moaning about Kaczynski.
When I posted it here, Grzegorsz explained that they can vote over the internet or through a mailing system.
When I went back and questioned them why they didn't, half of them were simply too lazy or didn't care.
So its pretty much a case of put up or shut up.

As for Kaczynski, I don't know enough about politics in Poland to suggest that he is doing a good job or a bad job. However, Polish people should be positive. Things are rapidly improving in Poland.

I didn't think much of that Newsweek article tbh, they make Germany out to be the good guys, despite the fact Germany were going for a power grab only a few weeks ago.

At least the Poles know who the bad guy is - RUSSIA - and are willing to take a stand

History / Worst Polish leader Lech Kaczynski or King Stanislaw Poniatowski? [44]

By forcing the EU to get off their ass and make a united front against aggressive Russian "diplomacy" e.g Polish Meat ban, cyber warfare on Estonia for moving monuments within sovereign territory over which Russia has NO dominion, and heavy handed threats using energy supplies as leverage.

Apply pressure on Putin over the erosin of democracy and abuse of human rights.
Extradition of Litvinienko's executioner to London and reinstatement of diplomats.

Has to start from somewhere tho. Instead of training police in Iraq, the US/UK/UN should send in troops to get rid of the current mafi....um, 'police' in Russia where they could actually make a difference.

Aha! You've been Americanized....

Think of a southern American trying to speak French, and you'll get the picture of what an American accent is :]

LMFAO, good analogy

My fiancee always says Irish people sound like they are trying to speak with hot potatoes in their mouth, HAHAHAH, its so true!
