News / IS NOBLE WINNER SZOSTAK POLISH? [68]

Ah, I've been expecting someone to post this. I have seen him speak in person. ^_^ A few years ago that was at the UChicago. Nonetheless he tells everyone he is American and every article reporting the Nobel prize win and his wikipedia article cite him as an American. Even if he did have Polish heritage, so many generations of his family were brought up in Canada and England especially. When I typed in SZOSTAK into an ancestry website it came up with heritage for Romania, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, and Russia. So you can't be sure.

Nonetheless though, Poland does currently have about a dozen Nobel laureates, be porud of that ^_^.

News / IS NOBLE WINNER SZOSTAK POLISH? [68]

Ok, now that it's landed on the Jewish topic I must intervene.

1. Ashkenazim is widespread and yes many jews is not most are Ashkenazi. They tend to have similar features as those of the Mediteranean (olive skin, dark hair/eyes). And yes, we have many of them here in Greece. I beleive close to 250,000 (with the pre-holocaust population being well over half a million)

2. No Ashkenazi does not give you special intelligence, 21% of ALL American Nobel laureates are Jewish, not internationally as you said. This isn't a surprise seeing as how there are currently over 20-25 million Jews in the US whome claim jewish ethnicity/religious stance. I have many friends whom are Ashkenazi, some are smart, others are averages, and some aren't so bright- just like people in your average ethnical group.

3. Saying that Ashkenazi's are smart because of continual persecution, insisting on eugenics killing all the dumb ones and all the smart ones being able to hide, wealthy enough to emigrate or pay off persecutions is extremely disrespectful and has absolutley no proof. Some idiots insist that this was the case of the holocaust, all the dumb Jews died and only the smart ones lived. That's such dumbfounded logic upon those fools.

Being at that, no I am not Jewish, but have many Ashkenazi Jewish friends (very nice people). I have also read a bit about Jewish history.

ps. Szostak is an agnostic/atheist as were his parents, and if you want to make a correlation, the vast majority of Nobel laureates worldwide are agnostic/atheist. They're smart enough to know that it's not religion or ethnicity that gets you intelligentsia.

which is highly justified, let me be proud of my 117 Jewish Nobel Prices

"yours"? the last thing a Nobel Prize is awarded to is ethnicity and the intellectual who actually worked his/her ass of to get it. I am also French, you don't see me bragging about the 89+ Nobel prizes they have.

Why don't ppl simply stop seeing Jews (and other minorities for that matter) as different? I for one maybe a Jew because my mom happens to be of the Jewish faith, but I have been born and raised in the Netherlands, therefore I am Dutch.

This is my point exactly, I would never deem them a minority and have many proud friends whom are Jewish. My Dad has Askhenazi Greek-Jewish origin (I beleive he is 25%) but that probably isn't enough to count it upon me.

Because the original topic of the forum asks whether Szostak is Polish or not(in simple terms), and being that I cannot find any proof I suppose we'll leave it at that. He (the laureate) hasn't really commented on it, rather to say that he is American.

Love / Why do Polish Women Think They Know Better? [134]

Well unless we live in the ages of the Nomad, I believe women are as intellectually competent as men and there should be no reasons to treat them inferior.

Since the topic has landed here:

please read "Man is Wolf to Man" by Janusz Bardach.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Is_Wolf_To_Man

It's an amazing story I read in my studies of the Soviet Union. Essentially, it's about a Jewish Pole whom survives the holocaust and the invading Germany to Poland by fleeing to the Soviet Union, there he fights epic battles for the Red Army only to be labelled a spy and traitor when he returns to Stalinist Russia under the purges. He then resides in a gulag in the kolyma region of Siberia which is the coldest and worst of them all. His story emphasizes survival and how he eventually went back to Poland to meet his beloved family.

It's an amazing story and will make you think in a completely different way of Jewish-Poles and the entire crisis in general.

ps. M-G you should visit Poland again somtime soon. ^_^

News / Why Polish police officers have to look like dorks....? [43]

How come most of the criminals are half-naked? :D

Apparently, many European police forces have adopted the Stalinist Russian method used by the NKVD and MGB/KGB to arrest people between the hours of near midnight to 3-4 in the morning. Where they are least likely to be prepared for defense/escape, and where they will be lesser of a problem to deal with since it's the period of their REM sleep and half their brain is asleep while they still put the cuffs on them. Also while many of these middle aged men are wearing their "half-naked" PJ's. Completely unfair on the criminals part....but it works.

Life / Who is your favourite polish writer? [15]

George8600:
Wisława Szymborska
No kidding ?

No kidding. I love Polish literature and I think it's genius. Me being half Greek and telling people of my itnerest in ltierature always raves up discussions of Homer, Sophocles, Aristotle, etc. Sure they are genius'; but what about Polish literature???

Many Poles don't even regard it. however Polish literature is epic, and especially the poetics. Yes Szymborska is one of my favorite poets of all time (next to Baudelaire and Rimbaid whom are Frances top). Essentially i recently bought this anthology which has all of Polands best literature:

Here is the 8 volume set:

Polish Literature from 1864 to 1918. Realism and Young Poland. An Anthology.
Bloomington, IN: Slavica, 2006

"The Virgin Mary's Crown. A Bilingual Anthology of Medieval Polish Marian Poetry." Selected, edited, and translated by Roman Mazurkiewicz and Michael J. Mikos. Krakow: Collegium Columbinum, 2002.

Krakow: Collegium Columbinum, 2002.

Polish Literature from the Middle Ages to the End of the Eighteenth Century. A Bilingual Anthology. Selected and translated by Michael J. Mikos.
Warszawa: Constans, 1999

Polish romantic literature : an anthology / Michael J. Mikos.
Publisher: Columbus, Ohio : Slavica Publishers, c1999.

Polish Baroque and Enlightenment Literature An Anthology, edited, translated, and with commentary by Michael J. Mikos
Columbus, Ohio : Slavica Publishers, c1996.

Polish renaissance literature : an anthology / Michael J. Mikos.
Columbus, Ohio : Slavica Publishers, c1995.

Medieval literature of Poland : an anthology / translated by Michael J. Mikos.
New York : Garland Pub., 1992.

Polish Literature from 1918 to 2000. Modern Literature in Poland. An Anthology.
Bloomington, IN: Slavica, 2006

You can but them from Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Also if you're into modern Polish poetry, I recently picked this one up which is a collection of Poland's best modern poetry; it's amazing really:

Happy reading. ^_^

I'm pretty sure part of the youth everywhere is into rap. I don't know why. I just remembered the good ol' days in the 1700's when we'd rock out to Beethoven's fifth. ^_^

Feedback / How far we have come on this forum... [9]

So, there's this website called the WayBack Machine, that apparently saves an HTML of the most visited sites on the web throughout time, and PolishForums is one of them. Apparently, this forum has existed since December of 2005, and here's how it looked like back then:

web.archive.org/web/20051212165533/polishforums.com

If you'd like to browse through the timeline of our forum or other websites, please go to:

web.archive.org/web/*/polishforums.com

Feel free to browse the forum of the past as you would with this one. All topics are fully accessible and readable, however I don't know what would happen if you were to post something. The universe might end.....so don't. Time travel is tricky. ;-p

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

Hello Everyone !

I am from Greek / Polish descent. I think I have the best of both worlds !! And a common history

Wow, and I thought my half Greek half Polish ethnicity were a rarity. I have met several on this forum already.

As for your statement, you're wrong. You can't generalize a population like that. The Greek disporia here in the US is huge, and all the Greek-American's I have met love their country very much. As for the Greeks in Greece, I have been to Greece many times and have seen none such. English is required to be learned in the school system and almost everyone there was speaking it, not to mention that according the The Economist Pocket Figures of 2009, Greece was a surprising third in rank of the country most travelled to by tourists in Europe by Americans. Much better than the fifth of last year. As for the people, the politicians are very well related. Do you know how much money the US has funded to Greece through the EU and NATO? The US has given us not only tons of domestic products but also tons of military technologies. Half our arsenal of fighter planes, vehicles, and some naval warfare are American made; along with tons of other consumer products that I saw when i went there.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_Greece

Not only that the US has built many bases both on the islands of Greece and in Greece. Along with three embassies.

As for your generalizing fact, there's people in every country that dilike America, and as previous posters have said what the government thinks isn't necessarily what the public thinks.

I have met many Poles whom aren't pro-America in a sense, (except for those in the US, just like the Greeks). It depends on a variety of things, and as much as I don't want to say it, the US has unfairly helped Greece MUCH more than it has Poland in terms of trade and diplomacy.

However, here's an observation. The Greek's seem to get along better with the British. Being that they seem to have more governmental trade with the UK, and there are Greeks within the government of the UK. Not to mention that Greek disporia there is massive compared to the porportions with the US. Same goes for Russia. The Russians and British have built many more bases in Greece than have the Americans. Why? I couldn't tell you. Also, the Russian and British disporia in Greece is much more massive than that of the Americans living there.

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

Why are we associating Wrocław with Lviv so much? honestly, I just spent half an hour searching for historical significance between the two and found nothing. The two are twin cities, but that doesn't mean they are in anyway historically connected. Poland has twin cities all the way in South America and South Africa....

If by historical control, Wrocław has only been under Poland, Bohemia(Polish dynasty), Austria, Prussia(German empire), and Germany(under Nazism).

Life / What do Polish people think about `Greece and Greek people? [15]

No organization and procrastination? You should talk to my two cousins whom are more Greek than I am and attend Ivy League schools...

And everyone fools the EU, give me a break. The Russians, British, and French have mastered it into an art. That doesn't make us less European as you claim....

Love / Do not marry Polish woman [212]

Can anyone say internet troll? And you're right, Polish women were bad lovers in the USSR; the only time they were with Russian men is when they were either raped by Red Army soldiers in the Great Patriotic War or had all those desperate men from the USSR pouring over from the Warsaw Pact that Poland was forced to be a part of.

But by all means I do not dislike Russians, I have many friends whom are Russian. They are quite handsome and intellectual; but I simply meant low minded ones like the troll here who are USSR lovers.

Obama aint gonna do **** for Poland or England

He ain't gonna do **** for Poland because even he himself said that is one and only agenda for Eastern Europe is to improve Russian relations by all means. Go figure...

He must think Putin likes him, do you know how many derogatory comments he made about Obama during his campaign? They were all published in the Moscow Times....

Love / Differences and similarities between slavic girls [30]

In my experience slavic girls appear quite similar in mentality, most of the differences being attributable to cultural factors like religion. What do you think?

Okay Southern, here is what I see. Religion? If there's any culture/ethnical group in this world that's more diverse in religion- it would be the Slavic people. Just take Europe alone, you have Poland and the Poles whom are the highest religious contry in all of Europe, and Russia which has the highest atheist rate in all of Europe, and all the rest inbetween. As for all else. NO Slavic girls aren't all the same. Are all Mediteranean, western european, central european, scandinavian girls the same? Those countries at least have similarities since they're linked together. The slavic states are the most widespread by far in Europe. Look at the southern slavic states such as the ones that border Greece, Italy, and Turkey. I would say that they have inhibited more Meditranean mentality than slavic. Also look at central slavs as opposed to eastern slavs, you can even point out many differences in mentality there.

Sorry but I don't see your point here.

Life / What is the nature of Polish people's hygiene? [76]

One pair of cloth in home too... same rule applies.SO........KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN FOR GOOD HYGENE!

Holy crap...I have met my hygential clone. :-)

Especially the towel, clothing, and toilet part. ^_^

But after having taken a few Microbiology courses at the university, you should really consider what soap you use (especially for washing your hands). All of that gel, good-smelling stuff is more of chemical aroma than antiseptic. My suggestion (if they have it) is go to a store and buy the DIAL foam soap. Apparently it is #1 Doctor recommended and contains special antiseptics that kill 99.9% of all bacterium. I've seen it used in doctors offices and hospital wards. It's full name is DIAL Complete-

dialcorp.com/dialcomplete/

However use it only a few times a day, it tends to be strong and will dry your hands up fast if used too often. Also consider carrying a bottle of hand sanitizer around with you. It's much more hygenic than a clean hankerchief that allows diseases to easily spread.

Also be sure to bleach your toilets and baths once a month, and to wash your bed sheets once or twice a month as well.

lol I can't believe I'm talking about this on PF.

Now that's noticeable. The Indian and Pakistani communities in Scotland consistently reek of sweat.

Actually they do bathe, and many daily. It's the Curry spice that they eat. It's known to be one of the most powerful spices in the world. With one meal it stays with you for a week; and wash all you want, it comes out of your sweat glands consistently. :-D

Also if you cook it in your house, you'll need a new coat of paint and carpet cleaning to get rid of the smell.
