Travel / Alcohol on trains in Poland [40]

I don't know it if is legal but drinking on trains is quite common - I've never been told to not to drink. On a number of occassions i've seen a "beer cart" stop by each cabin to ask if anyone is interested in purchasing some beer. Not sure if this is provided by pkp or if this was someone's private business venture:)

News / Western rationalism vs Polish (slavic) comfort [17]

Michal, you sound jealous/unhappy that your fellow poles in poland are much more successful than under communism...

false Polish Communism was

Communism was corrupt everywhere. It was not a very popular ideology - especially in poland.

Food / Is it just me, or is the Polish diet rather unhealthy? [119]

Is it just me, or is the Polish diet rather unhealthy?

Yup, its way too high in saturated fats. Poles don't eat much in the way of fruits and veggies either. I heard heart disease is on the rise in poland.

since Polish food is fattening how would anyone explain the fact that Polish people are not overweight the way some people in the Western countries are;)???

Well in the end it's all about how many calories people eat. If you don't want to gain weight, calories going in must = calories going out. I think poles generally eat less cals than americans for instance.

Life / Expensive brand retail outlets in Poland - how do they survive? [19]

Recently i stopped by a popular drug store (shoppers drug mart for you canucks) to buy a drink as there was nothing else in sight. I had a chat with the bored as hell manager who told me that hardly anyone comes into her newly built store. She is also expecting business to be in the red for at least 1 year while the surrounding area develops. I guess they built the store b/c they anticipate business to pick up as well as to prevent a competitor from taking the location.

I'm sure these foreign owned expensive clothing stores you speak of WB are there for a similar reason. Maybe they're expecting business to pick up, either from local poles or tourists. Germans love shopping in wroclaw, for example, because they can purchase the same or similar products for less.

turns into a biatch fest between my wife and the shop clerk.

Clearly the clerks are jealous that your wife has been fortunate to marry a wealthy foreigner who can afford to buy his lady expensive clothing. That and customer service is lacking in PL.

Life / Poland Vodka Production and alcohol drinking culture [16]

Indiwiduals,
The time has come to set the straight wersion
of the story that dewious vodkas companies,
liquor stores, bartenders
and misinformed friends hawe been prepetuating.
The authentic drink, inwented in Poland, is called Wodka.
Not vodka. There is no V in Wodka.
The vodka cartel has conweniently glossed ower
the simple fact that there is no V in wodka.
But history is on our side, and vodka cannot refute
the incontrowertible authenticity of history.
If you hawe been misled, do not feel like a wictim.
Be empowered; turn rage into actiwism,
and rewel in the support of 36 million Polish people.
And together, through non-wiolent protest, we shall bring
dignity to wodka and wodka drinkers ewerywhere.
We shall hawe our rewenge,
we will prewail and will be windicated.
Welcome to the Wodka Mowement.

News / Poland Remembers start of WW2 [200]

I watched some of the ceremonies on tv - bbc world covered most of it live.

Here is a pamphlet that the polish association in the UK is apparently handing out:

For those of you who can't make out the small lettering, go to [zpwb.org.uk/en/Current_Matters] and open the word file for a larger image.

Also some anti polish posters were put up in the border town of Loeknitz and Goerlitz. BB, was it you?? ;)

USA, Canada / WHAT'S THE CANADIAN HEALTH SERVICE REALLY LIKE? [15]

I have no complaints about the medical services here - but keep in mind i'm healthy. My doctor visits are limited to sports injuries. There are long wait times to see a specialist, but as a user above noted, this may be a universal problem in most western nations. Although in poland i must say, it is easy to see a specialist quickly if you are prepared to pay a little more. Emergency room wait times are also long, mostly because people go there to get treated for minor things like the flu, sore throats etc. Not all people have a family doctor so they turn to emergency rooms for treatment. I have a family physician, so i can usually get an appointment to see him within 24 hours, thus i avoid emergency rooms.

I've heard that some people get around these problems by relocating to another province where wait times are shorter than in my home province (ontario).

how Canadians who can afford it perfer to treat their ailments south of the border. What's the real low-down on this?

Yes, this not uncommon for those who can afford it. I think more average-joe canadians travel to thailand/china/india for serious procedures that are far too expensive in the US.

A plus, our cancer care is pretty good - i recently read that canada has one of the highest successful treatment/survival rates for cancer in the world.

Unfortunately, the system is abused and this makes it increasingly difficult to fund.

News / Microsoft Poland whitens a black face in its advert [130]

I saw this last night. I think they are trying to make ads reflect the "diversity" of the population. They do the same in canada. Larger cities have more visible minorities therefore (government) employers try to diversify their staff, ads, police forces etc. to reflect the local population.

Life / Poland's gun control [5]

I don't have any info for you to read about the details of getting a firearms license in PL, but i can tell you that the jackass above is wrong. It's difficult to get one, it's difficult to get anything in poland, but hey bureaucracy in poland is a *****.

Love / Is Polish girls' beauty a myth? [78]

When you see beautiful girls in western countries, they usually come from slavic nations.

No sir, they come from latin america. Ethnic diversity = sexy! End of discussion.

Think about it.How many men travel to England or Germany to admire the local girls' beauty and how many travel to Poland?

Once again, NO. Men travel to Poland because polish girls like foreigners (ie: can provide better life, $$). It is far easier for a man to get laid (or find a g/f) in Poland than in his home country! I know this from experience during my single years. From my travels to poland, I think most polish women dream of marrying a foreigner and leave poland for the west. For those of you who speak polish, you know what i mean. If you don't, open your eyes/ears!

Life / Polish health care system, my experience. [32]

The two guys were the guys who kicked the crap out of me, i forgot about the second guy.

I was referrring to these 2 guys:

So today I woke up with no wallet and what I thought was a dislocated jaw and after taking care of some business, Me, Cardno, and my Polish flatmate went on the look for a hospital which has an A&E department.

Life / Polish health care system, my experience. [32]

dtaylor5632

Sorry to hear about your bad experience walking home at night, i hope i don't sound too aggressive, but...

1. You should have called the police after waking up. They would have arranged transportation to a hosptial/physician. On my last trip to PL a friend (loud-mouthed american) of my cousins was roughed up by some hooligans and this is exactly what he did and everything went well. If $ was an issue you could have called from the hospital.

2. Why didn't the 2 guys with you not pay for your treatment (and you could have paid them back later) ?????? Some good friends you have. I would have handed over my credit card (or went to the bank) in the blink of an eye.

This is not a lot of money for emergencies (even for a Pole):

50pln for consultation, 50pln for x-rays, 50pln for doctor, and 50pln for meds.

3. Are doctor's not obligated to treat everyone? Code of ethics? Hippocratic oath? SzwedwPolsce you're a med student in poland, care to enlighten me please?

Waiting 10 hours at the emergency department is not uncommon in most countries. Or waiting many weeks (or several months) before you can see a specialist, if you have a chronic disease.

Yup, Canada being one.

Best of luck with your recovery.

Love / Why are more Polish girls marrying Americans? [77]

I'm really shocked and very much disappointed to know that Polish girls are marrying Americans.

What's wrong with americans? I bet more polish girls marry brits/irish than americans - r you going to be "disappointed" with them as well?

is it all about better life and job?

Yes.

News / How do people react when you tell them you are Polish? [71]

Usually people think i'm swedish (blond hair, light complexion) but when i say i was born in poland they become nervous and quite often the discussion ends. It's like they're scared to ask me questions about my background, much like people here in politically correct canada are afraid to ask a brown/black/asia etc guy where he's from for fear of offending someone. I'm actually quite an easy going guy and often joke about myself so i don't understand why people behave this way. I'm also white, so i can't pull out the race card.

Life / How do Poles view Polish-Americans? [8]

You will be viewed as a foreigner. My family in poland refers to me as "kanadyjczyk" (canadian) even though i was born in poland (i speak polish too) but grew up in canuckistan. No worries though, you will be like very much, especially by the girls:)

History / A few thoughts after plowing through most "Sabaton: 40-1" comments on YouTube [59]

4) And finally... why hasn't there been a movie made about Wizna yet? Are straightforward, patriotic movies a la "300" too un-PC these days? If Raginis had been an American, there would've been 10 Hollywood hurrah fests made about him by now, with Clooney and Brad Pitt lining up for another remake (these are the Days of Endless Remakes, after all).

I thought there already was a polish movie made about this battle?? As for hollywood, it will never make this movie.

I remember a few years ago there was some talk about a company in poland trying to recruit mel gibson to direct a movie about jan sobieski - it flopped.
