interesting you say that about Gorzow....I was there for some time in 1997/98...returning this year to visit people, I was struck by the difference in the city..how much quieter and fewer folks about..

TEFL = teaching English as Foreign Language.....more modern term is ELT (ENglish language teaching)
CELTA teaching certificate validated by RSA/CAmbridge.
Cert. TESOL, same but validated by Trinity.
I think the second one is supposed to give more preparation,(five weeks not four) for not only ppl learning English in their own countries but also for ESOL (English for speakers of other languages, eg permanent immigrants)
I think both of these courses prefer graduates but you can blag your way onto them if for example you had English Language A level, or other similar qualification.
Callan is a specific method which uses its own materials and doesnt require teachers to have the TEFL training. I dont know too much about it, but you might ask Seanus.

you forgot.."Never never split an infinitive"
These rules were made by some elitist Latin taught establishment bods, God knows when, maybe in the 18th century. Maybe the problems that Uk has with grammar and languages is class based?
Most of what used to be taught as 'grammar'.

UK infant schools are excellent, although I only have first hand knowledge of Italian and Spanish primary schools, I can tell you they simply don't compare at all.

listen, whoever told his parents this is talking GUWNO, how can you tell a kid to "forget" his mother tongue? of course he will not struggle in school with two languages. Really she should talk to the head teacher!
There is no issue with either language bothering him but his parents have been told to allow him to forget his Polish.

you're right, there may be underqualified teaching assistants, possibley giving out nonsense suggestions. However I really don't think unqualified teachers are employed....anywhere.

Maybe the school is in some inner-city somewhere.

that's right, the kid has a chance to be truly bilingual which can only be an asset in their future.
yes, but it needs to be taught properly...for example my own children have been "learning French" since Year 2 off and on (goodness knows why French....?) and don't know any word of it, since each lesson just repeats the last one...numbers to 10, colours. A lost opportunity.....

There are ignorant ppl running UK infant/junior schools who are worried about only ONE thing and that is LEAGUE tables.
My advice would be for your friend to ignore this nonsense completely.
In fact she could make an appointment with the head to ask what on earth this teacher is thinking of. His first language is of paramount importance.
Like why the school might give this advice.

no Mr Cool, it's all the UK. I would have thought that being married to an EU citizen and with an EU residence card, you would have no problem for a visit, I don't think you need a passport, why not do some research online?
