News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

Actually it will take 25 years to catch Germany. In 1997 Germany was 124% of eu average and Poland was 47. Now it's 111 vs 55. So it's 2% per year. If it stays that way, we will wait 25 years to catch Germany.

Language / Rok vs. Lat [30]

Lata' is just plural of 'rok'.

Rok doesn't have plular form. Lata is a different word, which is only used as plular form of rok. You could use wiosen, or jesieni, instead of lata.

I remember a tv turney, and a question about plular form of rok. Some guy have said "lata", and it was wrong answer, because as I said, rok doesn't have plular form.

Hmm, so going that way you say that there's no plural for 'czlowiek' too, or there's no past or future form for 'jestem' ???

I don't know about these words, but rok doesn't have plular form. That TV turney was "1 z 10", the most intelligent in polish tv.

Language / Plural forms 2-4 and =>5 [30]

but why do the dictionaries give me only palce, and not palców?

Because palce is plular form of palec. For egzample if you would see 8 cutted fingers on the sidewalk you would call them palce, not palcow.

When would you use palców then, seeing as they're more than 5?
Would they be palcow if not cut off buy still on the hand?

Look at cinek's #8 post.

for a non-indicated # you might use palce

That's what I was talking about :)

The cut off fingers are palce because you don't specify how many, but if you say there are 8 cut off fingers they are palców.

Right.

many palce

Wrong :/ many fingers = wiele palców. You use palce when talking about finger in plular form.
8 fingers - 8 palców
many fingers - wiele palców
(just) fingers (doesn't matter how many, cutted off or not :)) - palce.

I won't go to that room, because there are fingers - Nie pójdę do tamtego pokoju, bo tam są palce (there may be 2 fingers in that room, but there may be 8 fingers in that room, or any other number).

Language / What do you find difficult about learning Polish? [98]

and they never spell anything like it sounds

Polish words are much easier to spell than english words, because you just decombine the pronunciation. Only sz, cz, rz, ch are different. Learn how each letter is pronunced and you will be able to spell words.

BTW, why would they teach you the word 'ugór'? It's not on the "list" of words that are actually used. EVER.

Ugór is used some times. It means "abandoned field"

Law / Using Allegro in Poland - payment / transfer / rules / fees [18]

BLS - Why you want to know the minimal price? It shouldn't be important to you. It's established for a seller. If next to the price you see "cena minimalna nie została osiągnięta" then it means that the seller made minimal price.

Life / City heating system, any ideas on how it works? [15]

The administration of your osiedle decides if the heating is available in the summer. The elektrociepłownia produces heat all year. It's amazing for me that one facility produces hot water for whole big city. In the same time it produces electricity. It's saves some 30% of energy if it would be produced separately.

Life / What's the weather like in Poland? [81]

It's because of the Global Warming. That's why it's so cold :) But seriously July and August could still be hot.

Language / Using państwo and surnames. [8]

LOL. 90% of Poles would say it like that. And I'm one of them. Nie ma państwa Kowalczyków sounds wierd. You can say Nie ma Kowalczyków, or Nie ma państwa Kowalczyk.

News / The Polish Economy and its future [101]

I wouldn't say that geography is disadvantage of Poland. Look at Spain, or Canada. They also have rich countries only besides them, not round them. And what should Finland say?

I see very bright future for Poland till 2015, because of EU funds, but after that I don't know what will happen. Also Poland makes less debt now, than western countries. That will benefit in the future. I've made a comparison of gdp per capita (prices level corrected) of Poland and Germany. In 1992 Poland had 28% of Germany gdp per capita. 1996 - 34%, 2000 - 40%, 2004 - 43,5%, 2008 - 49,5%, And this year it will be 52,5%. That's not very impressive, but the speed of catching up increased significantly since EU acession. 9 percent points in five years.

jwojcie - Netherlands had -5.1% decline in q2 year over year. -0.9 was quarter over quarter.

Language / Declension of "-ość" - miłość / zieleń [19]

The vocative case should be zieleni.

Not zielenio?
Anyway I remember learning declination names and questions in 3rd grade I think. I was using declination in every sentence, but I didn't even know that it exist, before they made me to learn it in primary school :) My point is that when you are fluent in polish you don't even think, and know which case do you use.

Language / WACEK, BAŚKA, OTHERS? [6]

It means head or brain, as in "Baśka pracuje" (the brain is working or tckign away).

I think that baśka evolved(?) from word bania. Bania is a different word for głowa (head), because it has similar shape to głowa. Little bania is bańka, and it sounds similar to baśka. Dać komuś z bańki = Dać komus z baśki (hit somebody with your head).

But the question was "How to decline the word zieleń?", not "How the word zieleń will be declined in 75 years?".

Now everybody would say zielenio, not in 75 years. You are polish guy and you would say zieleni? Don't kid me. Or you aren't polish, and you know it only from book?
