Language / Do you think there is something like Warsaw accent ? [29]

different pronunciation of "ch" in Lech and Ruch.
Personally I'm unable to notice any difference at all.

me neither :D

Do you think there is something like Warsaw accent ?

no i don't think so... especially because so many people moved to Warsaw from different parts of Poland. I met people born in Warsaw and didn't notice anything strange in their accent/behaviour or words they use...

Travel / Wireless internet in Warsaw [9]

'there are too many users so we switched network resources to voice transmission".

They didn't switch anything - this is how gprs operate - voice have priority over data so when there are too many users connected to single BTS station then you can have no internet access (via gprs... or there is an internet connection but very low quality). I'm not sure how about edge technology, but for sure there are no such problems with hsdpa (separate resources for voice and data traffic).

Travel / Wireless internet in Warsaw [9]

You don't have many options here.... you can

* try to find open wireless networks - shouldn't be a problem since Mariott is in city center ;]
* get yourself gsm prepaid card and connect to the internet via cell phone

Language / Slang words like man, dude [29]

Fajny has had quite a long lifespan but still is slang

fajny isn't a slang... would never think about it this way. Other than that you're right - the line between colloquial speech and slang is fine.

and btw - I guess that cool is more often used these days in Poland than klawy.

Language / Slang words like man, dude [29]

gościu is sometimes used especially to people you are not friends with

yeah, this is neutral... used sometimes when we refer to someone who we don't know.

Also...

ziom and variations - ziomek, ziomal, ziomalek, ziomas, ziomuś

dude - koleś or stary

typ - used sometimes in situations like
'ej typie, a wpie$#%@ dawno nie dostałeś?',
'ej typie jak cie tu jeszcze zobacze .... '

there are also some variations of koleś - for example koleszka

also non positive word - leszcz, 'spadaj stąd leszczu!'

if someone know equivalent words for Polish slang that I used here then feel free to translate sentences above.

stary ziom"

I would say yes, sometimes, not often used ... it would mean sth like 'old (but current) friend'

google.com/search?q=%22to+m%C3%B3j+stary+ziom%22

'to mój stary ziom' - this is my old friend

Work / Is 8000zl Brutto per Month a good salary in Wroclaw??? [39]

I imagine that your "friend" in Wroclaw wouldn't be able to do the same ;)

Rent + bills - ~2000zl
Food - 800zl
(public) Transport - 200zl

This is 3000zl so 2500zl is still in your pocket.

You can save 30k pln per year... foreign holiday cost varies... say from 2000zl to 5000zl... so how many foreign holidays you can have when there is 30k pln in your bank account?

This is a bit extreme calculation though... everyone spend some money on clothes, for fun etc... but your calculation also don't include such expanses.

Work / Is 8000zl Brutto per Month a good salary in Wroclaw??? [39]

The weather is better in Poland and not everyone want to live in such busy city like London :D If someone makes 5,5k pln per month in Poland he can save easily say 2k pln ( as i said 1800 for flat and say ~1500 for food/car/pubs etc per month ). It means you can save ~36% of your salary per month. How much will you save in London?

I'm not telling that London is bad... but I'm afraid that your salary isn't much better for London's conditions than 8k pln brutto for Polish.

The first time I paid 1.40 zl (if not a student about 2.50 zl) for a 30 minutes bus ride in Wawa I thought it was a joke.

I was paying about 100zl in Warsaw for a travel card which was valid for 3 months - all buses, trains, night communication, metro included :)

Work / Is 8000zl Brutto per Month a good salary in Wroclaw??? [39]

London only cost me about the equivalent of 3800 PLN a month. But even after that, I was left with about 8000 PLN to spend on everything else.

Ok, let's make some math now.... so you earn 12k pln and spend ~4k for a flat monthly which is 1/3 of your salary.

Now, olito (probably) have a job offer where he can earn 8k brutto which is ~5500zl netto. He will spend about 1800zl for a 2 room, ~50sqr meters flat in Wroclaw which is also about 1/3 of his salary...

so where is the difference? Cost of living in UK is higher than in Poland.

Work / Is 8000zl Brutto per Month a good salary in Wroclaw??? [39]

I think 20-30% is a considerable difference.

Yes, you are right ..... but those 20-30% is when you like to go to pub and restaurant from time to time... if you prefer to stay at home then the difference is lower. What is also important you can earn even 50% more in Warsaw than in Lublin working on the same position ( I'm talking here about my field - IT stuff ... ).

Cost of living in Warsaw, Lublin and Wroclaw is very similar! Maybe you will have to pay a bit more for renting a flat in Warsaw than in Wroclaw and Lublin will be the cheapest, but... the differences aren't so big.

It's totally different thing though if you want to buy a flat.... then Warsaw is much more expensive than Lublin.

Ok... in Warsaw also pubs, restaurants are more expensive, but still... not everyone like to visit such places and generally speaking food cost is almost the same everywhere in Poland.

I'd say that Lublin is 20-30% cheaper than Warsaw and Wroclaw maybe 10-15%.

Language / Why są, why not jest?? [32]

I wanted to ask if the name of the city, Katowice means something or not to understand

Probably most of the names of Polish cities/towns have some meaning and there is a reason why Katowice are called Katowice.... but.. for a typical polish person (including me) Katowice means nothing, it's just one another city name ;)

Life / How much cash to give as a wedding gift? [25]

was just wondering the same thing myself...the thought of asking for money seems disgusting to me :/

really? and how about all those US wedding sites where people who getting married make a list of presents that they want to get... just in case to not have 5 coffee machines and 3 vacuum cleaners...

ok, now - nobody expect money from you..... you can give a gift, there are also people who won't bring anything. Most of people give money because it's just more practical these days.

Life / How much cash to give as a wedding gift? [25]

I'm adding this small bit of info cause I'd like to know how much cash should be given as a gift at weddings in Warsaw?

Well, it depends! Are you somehow related? Good friends or you just know them and see them from time to time?

Anyway, if you aren't related I think that 200-400zl is ok! This is more or less how much they have to pay for you both.....

Life / Could I live on 2000zl in Poland? [30]

I know Polish students who live good student-lifes on less than 2000 zl per month

but they don't rent flats... they often share a room with 2-3 people.

but as many said... it's possible to _survive_ for 2000, even for ~1900zl (400 pounds) in smaller cities and towns.. just don't expect that it will be easy.

Maybe you should consider Belarus?
