UK, Ireland / POLES SUPERIOR TO BRITS? [260]

tongue in cheek

of course it was you muppet, but, sorry to say your just reinforcing the stereotype of humourless Poles, again.
Simply put,you guys seem to think everything was roses and light for anyone not "lucky" enough to live under the fraternal umbrella of Moscow. Thats as silly as a westerner with the idea that day to day life in the east was a constant round of working on a kholkhoz, attending may day rallies and being woken up by knocks on the door from KGB/KBW/RSPCA while whistling the song of the volga boatman....

1. Overwhelming British/French advantage on the western front.
2. Most and best Wehrmacht units fighting in Poland.
3. Germany at that moment in time absolutely not being able to fight
on two fronts (that was admitted even by German politicians and generals).

Sum all this up and what you get? A QUICK VICTORY...
...but you sat on your butts.

Oh,I love this.....are we talking in the 2 to 3 week period ,OK,17 days,that Poland stood any chance of not being carved up by jerry and ivan? If we are,lets see;

1, Overwhelming french PAPER army, only half mobilized, under trained and in the usual french tradition of being pulled a dozen ways by a weak government. point 1A being there were NO british forces on continental Europe at the outbreak of war. Im soo sorry we hadnt thought to build the channel tunnel yet, must have been polonophobia on our part,ya know, dont make it easy to get an army accross the sea,it might help those whinning poles .........

2, er,maybe at first, but once the brest litovsk carve up was agread,no,mostly police and reserve units.By the time Britain had anything aproaching an Army across the channel Poland was well and truelly fcuk'd,the nazis were facing west, and,as Im sure your country would do,you thought of the defence of your own first, treaty obligations second,or,was the pre war polish dictatorship, the one who helped carve up czechoslovakia and for many years in the 30s wanted an alliance with germany, was your goverment one who would sacrifice your own country and people for some one else?

3, What 2 fronts muppet, again,by the time western allies were mobilised in France and belgium germany only had one real front, facing west.

Yes, Poland's assets were being stripped

I said COUNTY mate, not country, some counties in the UK faced problems and unemployment far larger than anything Poland experienced in the 90s so to blanket statment RICH WESTERN is plain bubble headed. Try telling the car workers in detroit they were having it easy a few years ago......rich country maybe, still "issues".

Were these the people who went to the apartheid ruled South Africa to make some change?

Yeah, right mate.......sure they did. These were people who had NO MONEY,so having the freedom to travel might have been dandy, tough titties if you could never aford it.

We have a saying around here amongst poles and brits,in the 80s in Poland you all had jobs and money but nothing in the shops, we had full shops but no jobs or money, same ole sh*t,different angle dont you agree?

since they lacked the freedom to simply emigrate with the hope of returning home one day and not being arrested.

yeah,ok,sorry fella, I knew too many Poles who did just that in the 80s,came here for a few years, went home to poland for a bit and then came straight back.......

I find it immensely amusing that people who make such statements, as the one
quoted above, usually live in rich capitalist countries and never experienced
living in a communist country. I guess they know better... LOL

Tosser, you have zero idea of where or how I was living in those times.Did your neighbours get arrested by your countries security forces on numerous occasions simply for being active members of a trade union? Did your entire county get asset stripped and face 60-70 % unemployment during the 1980s? Did you see your personal freedoms eroded ? Did you see entire communities having to live for 12 months on the charity of friends,no wages ? So get a grip you whinger, poland isnt the only place with tough times and hard luck stories, you tell anyone who lived in the North of England during the 80s,in a mining community that you think you had it tough, sorry old fella, unless you actually did spend time in a Gulagyou'll get a sonnata on the worlds smallest violin.....!

ShelleyS:
so Britain was still paying for doing Poland
You were not doing us a favour, you were trying to save your empire.

Hi old buddy, long time no headbutting......laugh,I nearlly bought a pizza, explain please dear freind how exactly declaring war on germany because it wouldnt leave poland would have "saved our(untill we got involved in ww2 rock solid empire)empire"? I cant remember there being any British colonies anywhere near Danzig, can you?

But you did exactly that with Czechoslovakia

Aye,but atleast we didnt F ing invade it alongside the nazis did we old fella?

but ,at the end of the day....YYYYAAAAWWWWWNNNNNN.

Polonius3:

Poland has traditonally been a haven for dissenters, accounting for the large number of Jews who fled England
This is why I am soooo happy to be half polish. Polish are strong and has guts.

Only trouble being there is no basis in historical fact for his statement, sure Jews were kicked out in the middle ages, but a couple of decades after Poland had the oppertunity, but failed to take it of freeing the serfs Britain had a person of undoubted Jewish descent as Prime Minister in Benjamin Disraeli....you guys had to wait till the reds took over before a Jew or any non catholic pole took power....

I'd add one more to your list; Poles did not traffic in the slave trade like some other European nations did.

No,it only enslaved huge swathes of its native population,d'oh! Atleast we didnt enslave our next door neighbours we sailed halfway around the world and let other people sell their next door neighbours to us :)

First of all, we didn't have all those colonies to
milk for centuries (East India Company etc.),

less than 150 years actually old chap, east india company was just that,a company, the 18th century equivelent of one of say haliburton. The indian rulers invited in traders, made alliances and generally kept full independance untill around 1858,even after then most of india was administered and defended by native indians.......shouldnt spout garbage when a descendent of old Bob Clive is on the forum :)

secondly the country was in ruins
after the WW2

financialy so to was Britain, when will you numpties get it that Britain didnt recieve a penny from the Yanks after the war, unlike the rest of Europe.

after that
we had 45 years of socialism.

yeah,so,we had over 10 years of maggie thatcher,i'll take your gulags over that b*tch anyday ....

and we sank half the British fleet,

you also flew the last "enemy" flag over a British town Hall :)

During the Second World War, the Germans couldn't invade our country over land, (And they really had overwhelming numbers!)

Yes,but tanks dont generally float too well over flooded polder do they?(as Guards armoured and princes irene brigade found out in '44:( )

UK, Ireland / FIVE DIE AS POLE DRIVES WRONG WAY ON UK MOTORWAY [78]

Man, lol, if I visited the UK the last thing I would do is drive.

Weve actually got some of the safest roads in Europe and pretty much the lowest rates of fatal accidents, plenty of idiots though but they are mostly lads under 25,fat blokes in white vans or dicks with braces driving audi's.

Oh man I don't even want to think about how confusing it would be.

Lol,Ive been driving here for 10 years and baring a brief run round the dutch countryside in a wartime jeep before I even had a UK licence I still leave the car at home before going to Europe and stick to public transport or Taxis,I mean,it takes me 3 days before I caan cross roads safely,Im not rushing to get behind the wheel on the wrong side :)

News / Germany seeks extadition of Sobibor death camp guard. [65]

but now he is barely alive anyway so leave him alone. He ain't got much left.

Thats what I think,on one level, then on another I remember that the nazis didnt spare victims down to their age or infirmity, quite the opposite. However,as "we" are not meant to be nazis why not hold a trail somewhere in the states,or just try him in absentia?

UK, Ireland / FIVE DIE AS POLE DRIVES WRONG WAY ON UK MOTORWAY [78]

"What about people that just want a couple of weeks holiday?" everybody starts bleating, "should they have to take another driving test ??"

After seeing a French registered car parked up in the central filter lane of a busy A road and 2 old dears studying a map, yes, atleast a pop quiz at Dover.....

saying he couldn't get good info on his satellite road reading thing....

What info did he need, its the M1 for goodness sake,I drove down it 2 days after passing my test! The only place it gets a bit dodgy is about 15odd miles from the M25 when it suddenly opens up into godknows how many lanes.

History / Taras Bulba - the movie [115]

I agree, it is rude. And in this new Russian movie Poles called ONLY "liaxy"...

Dont get your point,if a film was made about the American civil war and the southerners called their slaves African Americans the audiance would pee themselves laughing,if the term was in use at the time,no matter how uncomfortable it may be to hear now it is the correct term for a "historical" film, end of.

Example,in the UK we have a famous old film from the 1950s called the Dambusters, surprise surprise about the Dambuster raids in 1943,anyone over 30 knows that the RAF squadren leaders blackdog was called "ni**er",anyone under 30 doesnt even know he has a dog, censored out, history rewritten.

News / Poland to ban Che Guevara image [55]

Funny thing about the West is it's OK to say you were a commie in your youth and have a picture/bust of Stalin but not to say you were a member of the Facist Party and have one of Hitler.

Ok,I'll try and address that one.My youth, well,i was still in high school in 89 so caught the tail end of the Cold war.Yep,there was always the feeling of "us and them" when it came to East/West relations but as far as most of us here in the UK weer concerned if anyone was going to press the big red button it would have been that loony robot like ham actor in the WhiteHouse and we'd just be stuck in the middle. Communists had never been our natural enemy here in the UK,weve never had a strong gound swell of support for any forms of extreme politics,so where say France had communist parties we had wishy washy socialism and the dangours of any form of extreme right or left wing government were never percieved as real here. Remember also, prior to the cold war "communists" had been our allies in the war against the Nazis, the nazis being the only group who have seriously threatened Britains saftey since Napoleon so naturaly there was some support/respect/curiosity about communism, but it was always, except in rare ,treacherous circumstances like the cambridge spies, more of an intelectual exercise or a way to show dissatisfaction with present politics,in my day that B*tch wh*re Mrageret-hope she dies in agony-Thatcher. I never, even during my student days considered myself a communist or even fellow traveler but Id seen my county decimated by conservative policies and so was naturaly left leaning, yes I had a picture of Che on my wall, but will say I was even though in the minority due to actually knowing he was Fidels right hand man in freeing Cuba I was innocent in to how much of a see you next tuesday he later became,I now balk at the sight of his image on T shirts, especially the other week when I saw some documentry about British kids being shown round cambodia and one of the numpties wore a che t shirt to visit a memorial to the killing fields, but I have to remember that for most people its a cool, slightly rebelious image, not a call to revoloution.

For older people, who may very well have been communists or fellow travllers in the past, unless they actually spied for the Warsaw Pact,so what? Its called political freeedom, sorry that we had it for so long when you guys didnt but thems the breaks.

anyone in a Gordon Brown t shirt

...would be arrested under the UKs prevention of terrorisim act(section 23b-7a, the public display of images likely to spread fear amongst children and horses act 1973.)

in Norway (Too many socialists here)

were they the ones who locked up children in insane asylums simply for being half german?

There's the ironic Commie-chic which has been going on for a while.

Brings in the western tourists though. Love the place in Prague,Museum of communism beside MacDs...Lets face it,you guys who had to live under communism were always obbsesed by the "other" way of life and politics we had in the west, well, likewise,if you were disafected by western norms or politics back then you took an interest in the other way,ie,human nature says the grass is always greener, even when it quite plainly wasnt or isnt.

I was excluded from selection because I wasn't 100% British origin!

Boll*x...

matter what he achieved in service he would never rise rank to be a commisioned officer as he was Polish!

again, boll*x.Look at a long list of post war senior officers in all 3 services and you will see as well as dozens of Poles names from every corner of the globe....maybe its just a no whingers rule you fell victim to...

Her subjects are UK citizens like you.

I live here but Im no krauts subject....us true brits tend to leave that sort of thing to you europeans, you seem more used to it....

History / Russia to outlaw criticism of WWII tactics [57]

and crossing Vistula would be pathetically easy for the Red Army

no river crossing is ever "pathetically easy"witness soviet crossing of the oder and approach to the seelow heights......... Besides, stand on the west bank and look DOWN on the east bank, not only a river crossing but a scramble up hill that would have made Omaha look like a stroll down venice beach......

The film says nothing about Poles escaping from tunnels and being shot by the Red Army as they came out. You are a pathetic liar Carol.

They might not have been shot as they came out the tunnels by the frontoviks but once in say Praga the NKVD did donate 21 grammes of nagant lead to any Officers or NCOs in the AK or other non communist groups.

History / Stalag luft III - Zagan [6]

The Americans played no part in the escape

Not quite true, the only reason the US troops were left out of the final escape was down to the gerries building a seperate camp for them.....but,agreed,was a bit cheeky of hollywood to play up US involvment(mind you, hands up who is surprised?).

News / Does the polish immigration cause the increase of the interest in Poland? [20]

Generally, I think it would be too much to expect that suddenly British people will start to read Tetmajer, watch Kieślowski's movies, and listen to Szymanowski’s symphonies.

The ones who will, will be the ones who always did,Canal was a huge cult movie amongst those in the know even back in the 50s,(OK,I know thats Wajda but you get me..). What tends to happen in Britain is that it takes a decade or 2 and then the culture seems to absorb what it likes and ignores the rest, witness huge interest in Ska and regea in the late 60s early 70s ,about 10 years after the first mass immigrations from the West Indies, and witness britains most poular meal,Curry, not exactly a native Anglo /Celtic meal...:)

History / Poland Betrayed in WW2 [243]

Maybe someone could enlighten me?

Check the forum name.....:)
By the way, with my above Im not saying its wrong that Polands story is being told, its just it is now being told at the expense of other stories, and frankly, for someone to say British people who know their history are ignorent regarding Poland just shows that persons blinkered ignorence or more probably its the one thing that really gets on my t*ts about the Polish national charector, the tendency to self pity to the point of nausea.....

History / Poland Betrayed in WW2 [243]

Don't tell lies: Britain attacked Germany before France did.

Wrong, the french mounted the first and only attack into German territory in late 39 early 40,British forces had to wait another four years to get boots on the ground in the lair of the fascist beast.

The worst thing about it is that the Brits are being brainwashed by their media and history books - and know nothing about what we Polish did for them during IIWW.

Blah blah what a load of old horse s**t blah....What do yopu know,do you live in Britain? Try watch a documentry on say the BBC regarding WW2 these days(and for years now for that matter) and you get hit over the head with "Poor Poland this and poor Poland that",from recent documentries you would think only 3 countries existed east of the rhine,Germany,Poland and the USSR....maybe has something to do with half of our documentries these days being filmed on the cheap in Poland....

UK, Ireland / Polish parents hang themselves at their Lincoln, UK home [66]

They do this to their 11 year old Daughter, how could they? I dont know who is worse, the mother for putting the whole family through that or the father who,no doubt wracked with loss after his wifes death, still should have put his kids first before his own suffering.

Lets hope those 2 kids, and a 20 year old in that situation imo is still a kid, have some support over here in this awfull time for them.

Most shamefull thing is I suspect the little girl will now be blaming herself for this in the way kids tend to.

History / Operation Market Garden, what went wrong? [68]

You know what, its one of those things that have bubbled under for years now,it depends who you speak to,ask an old Desert Rat and he'd probably punch you on the noes :) But,lots of peopl who know a lot about these things seem to think its fact. I know my G Grandfather was apparently quite vocal in his dislike for Monty, G G was an old 1st war vet whod come up through the ranks and during the last war was a lt cnl in Commbined ops planning and training. Apparently whenever Montys name was mentioned he'd snear and tell everyone within earshot how great Eisenhower was :)
