Yesterday was the 65th anniversary of the events that the film "The Great Escape" was based on.

It was film night in Stalag Luft III and the dwindling band of surviving PoWs was marking the 65th anniversary of the daring breakout by watching The Great Escape. Even though this is Hollywood's celebration of their story and ensured their enduring fame, it wasn't the Nazis they booed - it was Steve McQueen and his motorbike.

Nice article. Pity it fails to mention that a replica of the hut from which the escape took place has been built by the RAF at the site of the Great Escape museum.

"The Great Escape"

A true storey that Hollywood glorified with America's fictional roll!

"The Americans played no part in the escape. To have Americans riding motorbikes was ridiculous.”

Great movie though, one that has withstood the test of time

The Americans played no part in the escape

Not quite true, the only reason the US troops were left out of the final escape was down to the gerries building a seperate camp for them.....but,agreed,was a bit cheeky of hollywood to play up US involvment(mind you, hands up who is surprised?).
