Life / Getting a NIP or PESEL [21]

I was given a "PESEL" number automatically after living here for 3 months. I actually went to the town offices to get one as I had purchased a new car. Was told when I got there that I had already been given one. It would have been nice if somebody had bothered to tell me, would have saved me a trip and having to que yet again, but, that would be too easy....lol

Work / Working independent / creative industry in Poland [15]

I have been told that the business tax is set at 19% which may reduce at some time in the future. Individual tax is at 3 rates, 19%, 40% & 50% but I cannot confirm this. What about National Insurance?

Being in the EU, there is a reciprical agreement regarding tax, if you are non-Polish and pay your tax and national insurance in the UK, you should not be liable for tax in Poland. After one year of leaving the UK, you would need to pay ZUS for the usual health insurance but this would not be based on your earnings as it is a flat rate contribution.

These are the facts as I understand them. You should always check with the relevant government departments as they seem to change the rules on a daily basis.

On arrival in Poland you will need to get an address, then, you will need to register with the local authourity, then, you will need to get a residents permit from the goverment department in one of the larger cities (Krakow, Warsaw, etc)(The residents permit also doubles as an ID card which is useful as it saves having to carry around your passport) These offices have forms in English advising you what documentation you will need, you will also need 4 passport photo's (remember to show your left ear otherwise they will make you take them again, there is nothing on the form that tells you this). You will need to open a bank account in Poland and take a current statement with you (this also was not mentioned on the forms but is required) to show that you can support yourself.

Daveperso.................I can only speak from personal experience, since moving here, I have been shown nothing but kindness and friendship. My money comes from abroad and this has not been a problem with anyone. I live in a village outside of a small town and my partner is an English teacher and I give her students free "conversation" lessons a couple of times a week. The neighbours are fantastic and everyone is in and out of each others houses all the time. If you have not spent much time in Poland a lot of things will seem strange and pointless to you, even very frustrating at times. Have an open mind and never think you are superior, chill out to a slower pace of life and enjoy.

Work / are there ANY young, American/British females in Poland? [15]

Hi Jill,
I live about 90km to the East of you with my partner and our two children. My partner teaches English at the local secondary school and there are a couple of native English teachers living in the town. I saw some female American teachers a few years back but I believe they moved on. If you every want a roast Sunday dinner you are welcome to visit.

Good luck in Krakow.

Work / Teaching English in Limanowa, Poland [3]

You might like to try the English language schools in some of the smaller towns. I have bumped into a few Americans who have taught in Tarnow and have heard that there is a shortage of Native English speakers. That said, the pay is not brilliant but this can be suplemented with private lessons and there is not a lot of competition.

Love / friendhship with polish girl [63]

If you give and expect nothing in return, you will never be dissapointed. You help because you want to do this, not to make the other person feel obligated to you.

Life / Who's thinking of moving to Poland? [67]

C,D,E and F for me, 5 years now and no regrets. I live in the South East of Poland and rarely meet anyone from the UK, I certainly have no wish to return there.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane Travel and Hotel [16]

You may find most of the hotels booked up for the New Year but you can try this one fian.zakopane.com/pl, remember, this is the peak season so prices will be a lot higher. The staff are friendly and speak English.

Law / Raiffeisen Bank in Poland [10]

I have seen several branches of this bank in various cities in Poland. Laws are quite strict here, regarding banking so I think you would be safe doing business with them.

Life / Health care in Poland for ex-pats [26]

You should have your "European Health Card" (This replaced the E111). If you are paying NI contributions in the UK you are covered for treatment throughout the EU. This includes all forms of treatment but excludes repatriation to the UK by air ambulance etc, for this you will need private insurance.

Travel / Health Tourism in Poland [17]

You do not need a "Clinic" for dental treatment, just a dentist who is recommended....lol
The last "filling replacement " I had in the UK cost £128.00. I have had some done here in Poland and the usual charge is 50 - 70 zloty (£10 - £14.00.)

Life / What type and brand of cars do Polish people like? [51]

Anything that can overtake another car, preferably with no indicators, must have previous dents to show indication of serious intent to damage you if you do not get out of the way. Insurance, maybe?..........respect,.........no.way!!!!!!!....get over you m...th.fu....ker!!!!... end of story..hundreds of deaths!.....fact.

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

I feel like having a 5 minute rant as well!!!!. Try and think of the most useless things in Poland.

1) Wrist watches (Polish people have no concept of time or punctuality)
2) Indictors on cars (they never use them)
3) Football pundits (They wheel out the same geriatrics for the past 5 years)

Please feel free to add:-

Inkrakow........to be honest, its bl**dy dangerous driving a right hand drive on the roads here!!!!...when you are overtaking a large truck, you have to put half the car on the other side of the road before you can see to get past it, AND watch out for other drivers overtaking you at the same time!!!!

Dogs should never be kept in flats. Since leaving the UK, I have waited 8 years to have a dog again. I take her for walks twice a day, no cars around, just beautiful forests and lakes. This is the heaven that Michal does not understand.
