Language / Polish Language Pronunciation - Example Words and Phrases [220]

the number 3 in polish.

Nightmare!
No matter how many times i hear my girlfriend say it to me, i still can't get it.
When she says it, it sounds like "trzy" but when i say it, it comes out like "czy."
It must be so easy, but for the life of me, i can't get it.

Thanks a lot. :)

Wow dziekuje bardzo Glowa, can't tell you how helpful that is!!
The "g in genre" bit has really clicked with my brain. You know, i might just be able to crack it now, though i'm getting some strange looks from my friends, sitting here chanting terzy to myself! :)

As for the number 6, oh boy! I've still got to get through 4 and 5 first! :) :)

Thanks again!:)

UK, Ireland / Another Polish Girl Dead in Glasgow [17]

My heart sank when I read the BBC and they said they'd found a woman's body in the church and they thought it might be the missing polish student.

Absolutley tragic.

The worst thing about it was, she even already booked her ticket to fly home...poor, poor girl. :(

Language / 'mojego ojca' - need some grammatical explanation [12]

it cannot be that bad

Oh, spoken like a true optimist! :)

I'm afraid in my case it is. hehe
I'm getting to the point where i'm starting understanding what's written down in front of me. (As long as I hold the paper upside down and squint) :) but as for getting anything recognisable to come out of my mouth....well, ähhh, mmm yes.

Love / Illegal Polish girl wants me to marry her for citizenship [124]

Tlum

You're talking a whole lot of sense there my friend.
An ex of mine did what yours did. Hit me hard, as it was 2 years for me, but like you say, though it hurt like mad at the time, now I know that it was definitely better to find out before children and mortgage etc.

As for Guest, hmmm. It is ultimately your decision of course, but my 0.02€ on this issue are, especially as you do have feelings for this person, walk away.

I just think that if you do this marriage thing, there will be a little part of you hoping that it wasn't just for the citizenship or whatever and maybe she really does like you after all.

It would be setting you up for a lot of pain in the future if she got what she wanted and left without a second thought.

Protect yourself, nobody else will. :(

Hope i haven't come across too harshly.

Language / 'mojego ojca' - need some grammatical explanation [12]

in the worst case you can come here and we'll help you out

Not worst case at all, that's very kind. I won't abuse the privilege though. But it's good to know, if i have a question, there is somewhere I can ask.

I'm sure anything remotely recognizable makes your girlfriend very happy

If only that were true.

Guess I should explain.
She thinks i'm daft for wanting to learn Polish...she just can't understand it. She says, English is much easier and after all, as she speaks probably better English than half of my city folk, there is no point.

I mean, I can see her point of view and i'll be honest and say, as i'm speaking German all day everyday, it is nice to rattle away in English once in a while but I dunno, I just wanted to make the effort and try.

(Language is a big passion of mine, you find out so much about a culture and people by the words they use, it shows you what they hold dear etc etc and as she is important to me, I want to learn more about her way of thinking and viewing the world)

Of course, if I ask her for help with anything Polish related, she gets very impatient (putting it mildly! hehe) with me and well to be honest, that's a bit discouraging, so I don't.

Hence why it's such slow going; just me and my Teach yourself Polish book. :)

oh boy, another Essay...Well done if you read all the way to here..if not

WAKE UP!!! It's over.

Language / Speaking bad Polish? [14]

Good question! Can I add to it? Can we also have the translation/reason why the one is bad and the other isn't?

Love / What kind of girls do Polish men like, and why? [30]

Good question. When i first arrived in Austria, i thought there were lots of unmarried Austrian beauties walking around, then i found out that it's the right hand not left to show you're married here and my bubble was well and truly popped! :)

Apparently here, you wear the engagement ring on the left hand, 3rd finger, excluding thumb (men too) then when you get married you swap and wear it on the right but the engagement ring disappears. (afaik)

I'm pretty sure that in PL it's the right hand when married too but i'll ask my lass about the engagement ring tomorrow and let you know Krysia.

UK, Ireland / They eat a LOT of chocolate in the UK! [30]

Some people would eat it for breakfast, luch, dinner......

Don't forget supper too. Nothing like ending the day with a Cadbury's Caramel. hehe

I know, you can always tell that a country loves it chocolate when they start gigantifying it...good time to be a dentist in Britain perhaps! :)

Dear koziol what in the world is a bollock

A bollock in its literal meaning is a testicle, usually plural, bollocks (we mostly have 2) :) but yeah in this context it was bollocks...meaning what a load of rubbish. :)

News / Terrible School Incident in Gdansk, Poland [34]

That is truly awful...i've never read anything so upsetting in a long while. I'm with Shelley though, back when I was at school, the teacher left the classroom and it was party time, we used to sit on the desks, chat with each other, get out the walkmans or gameboys and generally enjoy the sudden, unexpected free time...

I dont understand why the other girls couldnt stop it....

These days, we're in a walk on by society, people in London will step over someone lying on he floor bleeding and only worry that they might have got blood on their Jimmy choo's. Or in Belgium, a man asked a few kids on a bus to stop making noise, they stabbed him to death and the 30 other passengers on the bus promtly alighted at the next stop.

I just feel like we all think, "thank god it's not me," rather than "oh my god, what can i do to help" these days, sadly. :(

Blackpool is a really boring place in Northern England.
It's very dark there, so they have lot and lots of lights there and also, they force Donkeys to carry small children up and down the beach in the cold and wet.

I didn't know that string fun was banned in Blackpool....wow, yet another reason to never go back!! :)

Are you a security guard... safe and secure?

I personally think he might be a mathematician, after all he did say:

for [=] 1 2 1

Gotta hand it to him.
